Chapter 3: Chapter Three: Break In, Break Out

Night had fallen us. I thought the first friend I would've made was Dale, but because of whatever he knows, that I don't, I'm in jail. Instead my first "friend", is a serial killer, and she definitely acts it. Other than her looks, I wouldn't wish to be in this cell with her. She was already sound asleep above me. Lying in my metal sheet of a bed, my back felt as though it would break against this metal. What is so special about me? Nothing makes sense to me, and I know absolutely nothing either. Leaving that horrid bed, I went to the window we shared, and peered out. Our room was small like all the other cells. Beds hung off the wall, a toliet in a corner, and the rest just emptiness. Looking out, I stare at the moon. It shone brightly. Accompanied by all the stars that littered the sky with it. I tried to look elsewhere, but the window wasn't very...large. Exhausted, I tapped on the ladies shoulder. 'You awake?' I whispered softly.

In return, she gave a low growl, 'Unfortunately, yes. Yes I am.'

'Sorry, but if I'm going to be your partner, I have two request.' I poked my fingers at one another, waiting for a response. After five minutes, she slide out her bed and stood infront of me.

She sighed, 'What are they?' Rolling her eyes.

'One-' I stared at her impatient eyes, as if fear suddenly filled me, but I shook myself and continued. 'One, what's your name?'

'First you,' she shoved her pointer finger against my chest.

'I'd love to, but frankly, I don't know who I am.' I sounded pathetic. "I don't know who I am," I thought, mocking myself.

'Sammy,' she extended her hand out to me, 'Sammy Heartstone.'

'Heartatone? That's a-' I looked at Sammy now, scared to say the wrong thing, 'Unique.'

She huffed. 'Now what was the second favor?'

I looked out the window from where I was. 'The beds rough, could I sleep on you,' I felt stupid for saying anything. 'Actually forget I said anything,' I started back to my bed, but she grabbed my arm.

'I need to treat my partner good, join me weak one.'

I didn't know how to react. I watched her now sit along the wall, and pat the ground beside her. Joining her, I leaned on her. 'You're twenty-five right?'

'How'd ya know?'

'Just good at guessing....I guess.' I shimmied into her side, before long, my eyelids became heavy, feelin drowsy, sleep succumbed to me.

Waking up, I'm instantly flung to my feet. Look at Sammy, she had a crazed look once more on her face. Running to the cell door, I saw the guards running all around, like a cluster of chickens. Sammy wrapped her arms around my waist. 'What the hell is going on!?'

She stayed silent.

'What the hell did you do! You Physco!' I looked down at her arms around my waist, was she trapping me? Or what? Staring back out into the hallway, the cell doors all opened. 'How?'

'Can be opened via key, or-' she leaned in closer, 'Electronically.' She grabbed my arm and lead me out.

Running, I looked both ways, but no guards to me found. 'Ok, but how did you devise this? You said I was your partner.' I heard a groan. Coming round the corner, a man with decayed flesh swung at us. Quickly I pounced back, but Sammy didn't.

She swung her left foot high up into the mans face, knocking his head clearly off. 'With hidden explosives, and smuggled undead....a lot can happen.'

Approaching the corpse, I upholstered the gun from it's hip, and checked the magazine. 'But how did you get them here?'

'I think you misunderstood me,' she ran on.

I followed quickly. How did I misunderstand her? She seemed awfully clear, or atleast to me. Coming around another corner, a zombie leapt to Sammy, but with a precise bullet, I placed it between it's eyes.

'Nice shot, where'd ya learn to shoot like that?'

'I-I don't know.' Seeing sunlight bleed through the front door, we entered the parking lot. It was littered with corpses of the undead, and men in blue as well. Suprisingly, they had somewhat of a society here. Walking out the gate with Sammy, fires rose high from all around. 'You didn't just let them in the prison....'

'But the whole town!'

In saying that, I spot a child, zombified, going down the street, chasing what I presume is, or was, it's family.

Sammy then grabbed my shoulder and spun me around to face Dale's car in the parking lot. 'And our ride out of here!' She picked up a brick and smashed the window. She hopped in, unlocking the doors, just to spin a pair of keys, turning the car on.

Sitting in shotgun seat, I placed the gun on the dash board, and turned to face Sammy. 'I didn't see Dale? I assume you killed him.'

'You saw what I did, we escaped same time.'

After that, I heard something slam into the side of the car. Both of us immediately turned, and what we saw, was Dale, infected, and hungry. Racing to grab my gun, Sammy had floored it, and with the cars sudden momentum, Dale's arm was torn off. The streets were filled with chaos. People were shoving one another in hordes of zombies, fighting for food, water, all that jazz. 'All this, to break out.' I mumbled to myself. At sudden, Sammy took a right turn, onto a very secluded road, and made a stop at a rundown building. In all reality, of the few buildings in this settlement, this was the most worn down. 'Why did we stop?'

She flipped her hair onto her back. 'Need supplies, wait here.'

I watched her now walk inside. Peeking outside the window, I didn't caught wind of anyone or thing, so I opened the glove department, took the newspaper, and placed it on my head. Trying to nap, a word in bold stuck out to me. "END." Removing the newspaper, the title read "THE END OF THE 21ST CENTURY." 'Wait, is this what happened?' Reading the article, it basically said the events that took place in the year 2023. 'But then what year is it?' At that, someone slammed into my side of the window, a child.

'Please let me in!' She cried.

It felt wrong to ignore her. In response, I tossed the newspaper aside, and stepped out. 'What's wrong little one,' I picked her up. She was light, definitely five.

'I was chased mister! By dead people!' She was unpleasantly calm.

Why is a five year-old this calm? A sharp pain came quickly to my chest. My heavy body fell against the car. Looking at the child take a couple steps back, she giggled, while holding a knife. The tip was bloodied, fresh. Placing my hand where the pain came from, my jumpsuit felt wet there. Looking at my hand, it was...my heart began to race...it was...my vision seemed to blur....it was my blood.

'Now mister, do me and my mommy-'

So the child is doing this for her mother.

'And die faster,' she used her hand to gesture someone to emerge.

Coming from behind me, I heard heels on concrete. Before long, and tall slender woman stood infront of me, then went to her child. I was losing blood, I might faint soon. I could barely make out what they were saying, my eyes were half open now. Looking up at the mother, she was holding the child's knife now, and she turned to me. I was going to die. The woman's body, at sudden, collapsed onto me. Looking at her, a bullet wound penetrated her head and went cleanly through. I couldn't keep consciousness for long, and like that...

'Partner!' A woman yelled.
