Chapter 2: The First Day of School

Sonrei slowly opened her eyes as light flooded into her room. She groaned rolling onto her side facing away from the window and threw her blanket over her head in an attempt to hide from the inevitable. "Come on now sweetie," Sonrei heard a soft, kind voice say, "You can't stay in bed forever or else your going to be late." This voice belonged to her mother, Layla Gersca. "Well you know, you could just let me, not go to school today," Sonrei replied. A soft but joy filled laugh rang out. "Sonrei, it's the first day of school! You can't already being trying to start skipping class." Sonrei sighed in defeat and sat up, letting her skin be hit by the sun's light. "Quickly get dressed and come down stairs," Layla said as she turned toward the door. "I'll have breakfast ready in five minutes." Sonrei jumped out of bed and walked over to her closet. She swiftly put on her school uniform and walked down stairs for breakfast. Once she reached the bottom of the stairs she saw her mother flick her hand and saw the stove underneath the pan ignite. "Was is to much just turning the stove on with the dial?" Sonrei asked. Layla looked at Sonrei with surprise as she didn't hear Sonrei coming down the steps. "Sonrei you scared me there for a second," her mother replied. "And besides what's the point of adding to our electric bill when I can just do things like this?" Sonrei shrugged once again not really arguing. Luckily for her Sonrei was the result of a marriage between two of the seven families, her father coming from the Gersca family while her mother came from the Noyer family. This allowed her, when her parents were given permission from the corresponding heads, to become a duel-elemental, controlling both ice and fire. There were not a lot of duel-elementals as marriage between the big families was rare. Most of the time a person in the big seven would marry someone that was outside of the big seven. Sonrei received her breakfast and began to eat as if she hadn't eaten in 10 days. Layla smiled at her before turning back to the kitchen. "Thanks Mom!" Sonrei said before springing out of her seat, walking over to the door and picking up her backpack. "Make sure you have everything," Her mother said. "Mom, I checked it about five times last night, everything will be fine." Sonrei responded. She put on one the straps, waved goodbye to her mother and walked out the door into the city.

About 10 minutes later, Sonrei reached the front step of the school, taking a deep breath in, and walked inside. The place was filled with chatter from students and teachers alike. Now unlike Sonrei, most of these kids weren't born into the big seven, meaning unless their family was wealthy, they didn't have an element yet, and most likely wouldn't get one until they go to military school. Sonrei walked through the school hallways and after getting lost for about five minutes she finally found her classroom. She opened the door and went inside. Seconds after walking into the room she sees a kid fly across the room and into the wall. 'What the hell...' She turns toward the direction in which the child came flying from and saw a child about her age holding a sword made out of light. The other one child, out stretched his hand and a spear that was made out of black energy appeared. 'A shadow spear. Just great. Not only do we have a darkness bender, we also have a light bender. In the same classroom. This, is going to be interesting year...' However Sonrei correctly guessed that they were only at the tier three level, while she was at tier five with both of her elements. She sighed, originally she was going to hide the fact that she had her elements this early but she wasn't going to stand here and let these dipshits ruin her first day. "That's enough," Sonrei stated, crossing her arms. "It is the FIRST day of school, and you two are already fighting. I'm not going to sit here and watch you two ruin the classroom before the year has even started." The two of them on opposite sides of the room both turned to her. "And what do you think you're going to do about it?" The one holding the shadow spear said. He held up the spear and pointed it on Sonrei. Sonrei sighed. "So be it." She felt her elemental energy start to leave her core and spread throughout her body as she looked back at the dark bender. 'You wished for this... It's a shame I can't use my strongest moves here, otherwise the classroom truly would be ruined.' In seconds eight ice spears appeared behind Sonrei as look on the dark benders face changed from arrogance to fear, as his body started to quiver ever so slightly. But instead of surrendering, the dark bender clenched his teeth and gripped his spear tighter. He rushed forward stabbing the spear through the air, aiming for Sonrei's stomach. However, with the flick of her wrist, all eight spears flew through the air faster than the dark bender could react. All eight spears struck the shadow spear shattering it, and the darkness dissipated. The dark bender's eyes widened in shock as the spears then struck the ground surrounding him. These spears then formed walls, basically surrounding the target in walls. The dark bender was shocked to find not only someone else who had an ability but was also stronger than him. "I surrender, your clearly stronger than me," he said. "The name's Michael Flintols, but you probably already knew that last bit." "Sonrei Gersca," Sonrei replied as the ice prison dissipated. She looked over at the light bender. "Are you also going to try something?" The light bender shook his and then laughed. "I might not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I'm not a mad man." He walked over to Sonrei and Michael. "Name's Clark," he said as he reached out to shake Sonrei's hand. "Clark Litqui." Sonrei shook his hand as they heard the door open. "Well, it looks like we already have a trio of trouble makers," The teacher said as he entered the room.
