Chapter 2: Chapter 2: Parmos

'There's no doubt about it.'

My feet were standing upright on the rooftop of a wrecked building and my eyes scanned the entirety of the area. The horizon displayed a beautiful sunset, but the destruction brought upon this place completely ruined the atmosphere.

'This place...it's the city of Parmos.'

Parmos.

It was a beacon of light for the many people here in this world. Parmos was a city-state. It did not conform to any kingdom nor empire, and it had stayed that way for many centuries. This was a place where the foolish seek wisdom, a place where people from many different backgrounds intermingle and found common ground. Trade and commerce made the city a bustling place and the many academies founded in this city pride themselves for having the nobility and members of royalty from many parts of the world as their alumni.

The reason why this place also flourished was due to the strategic location the city was located. It's port was one of the busiest and it played a huge part in lowering the prices of many different commodities and it even made access to goods that were very rare to find due to the abundant resources the land nearby had to offer. If you can't find something in your country, don't worry, Parmos has it all.

'If Parmos fell today, then that means, it's presumably eleven years back in time?'

The tragic fall of the city was a critical point where things went awry for humanity. To add things, the city was also located somewhere near the border of the Chaotic Region, a huge chunk of land left unexplored, and the place where the hundred races reside.

Before Parmos even became the hub it was known for, the settlement was once but a humble stronghold built by the wishes of a hero of the same name, Parmos. The land which he settled upon was deemed unprofitable since waves of invading monsters would come every now and then despite its richness in resources.

Of course, profit wasn't the intention of his settlement in the first place. His reason was one of many noble causes: To guard the region from any future invasion by the hundred races should they unite, just as he once did, against the forces brought under the banner of the Lord of Mist and Rain, ruler of the Chaotic Region of the time. The quest was then passed down to his descendents and the people of the settlement after he died.

And as the years went by, the invasions became increasingly scarce, in turn, the settlement became even more prosperous and lively, added with their bountiful resources, the settlement grew into the blooming city of the present day.

Throughout the years, fortifications were also built, such as the five great keeps of Parmos that oversee any activity from the Chaotic Region. Walls were made and frequent hunts and patrols were issued to thin out the population of the hundred races.

Yet after the last known invasion that happened two centuries ago, humans began to grow lax and overestimate themselves. Thinking that the hundred races had given up. Oh how wrong they were, as patience suddenly became the hundred races's key asset in this never-ending conflict.

Though emphasis on external defense, such as the professional armed men stationed on key areas, and constant upgrades of hardware were regulated and cared for, the internal situation of humanity therein laid the biggest weakness they ever had.

Good times resulted in the weakening of mankind. Some wanted to take advantage of it, so as human nature goes, people started to fight amongst themselves. They became paranoid, untrusting, and played dirty politics against one another.

It bode well for the hundred races. As opportunists, they found the weak links among the chains. The Fallen Ones, men and women who succumbed to the guiles of darkness started to appear. They began to infiltrate every cornerstone of society as all knew it, including Parmos. It resulted in the city's downfall, the city's ultimate sin.

I spun my head lightly and rubbed my temple. I gritted my teeth.

'Why, why wasn't I sent even further back!'

A week, no, five days, just a mere five days and things could perhaps change. Parmos wouldn't fall so miserably like this.

But doubt pricked my conscience as I looked at the tips of my fingers. This hideous green skin that I was now trapped in.

'Would they believe me though?'

'In this body?'

Yeah, there's no way.

But I suddenly grasped my hand into a fist. 'No, I should be grateful that only Parmos had fallen first.'

Sacrifices were unavoidable. It became crystal clear to me as time went on. Not everyone could be saved. The idealism I had in my youth, that everybody could be safe was already diluted as more and more people surrounding me bite the dust as time went on. When death became personal, you started to realize just how powerless you are. So I would only do what saving I could to the best of my abilities.

'So this is my role now, eh?'

After I collected my thoughts, I came to a definite conclusion. It didn't matter whether I came back in time as a human nor a monster. Looking at it in an objective view, either way would be good. Though I would've preferred to be back with my original body as a human, being a goblin could also work. Just as how they manipulated against human society with corrupted men, so shall it be with me. I too, would work behind the shadows and sabotage what plans they might come up with.

I then directed my eyes full of conviction towards the merry hundred races that were left partying to one side of the city.

'Wait for me scum, I'll show you what true fireworks and merry looks like.'

"Kruaghh..."
