Chapter 2: Potion: Poison or Remedy?

The Mage's eyes were a dark red with a ring of silver in them, the longer you look into their eyes the more detached with reality you became, the world would fade away as fear replaced everything.

At least that's what the Mage had been told, he had never met another of his kind.

"Is Blackwater of such importance to your master?" The Mage wasn't green behind the ears, he could see the fear in the butler's eyes although it wasn't directed towards him.

"The concept itself interests my master, the idea of a city full of people with silver rings in their eyes, a city where Awakened are accepted and can be legal residents, the concept is dangerous but attractive." Interest starts to creep into his eye before the fear rushes in like a tidal wave.

"My master wishes to know how you came to know of the city and why you wish to move there." He slides a piece of paper to the Mage, on it are orders of some kind.

"I overheard a noble talking about it, he knew very little himself. He only knew that the city would be built in this direction." The Mage said while reading through the paper.

'This noble isn't the smartest, the city is to be built in a years time, it will be public knowledge by the time any of this is useful.'

"My reason to move there is so that I can avoid this, pestering by Hunters and nobles alike." He said while playing with his cane, the Rune on the iron cap looked like a piece of chain surrounded by a square and scribbles. The butler couldn't make any sense of it.

A rough voice came from the Mage's left, "I need your help."

In his hands were a few silver and piles of copper, they shook as he tried to keep himself together.

A sigh came from the Mage's lips, his meal had gone cold from all the interruptions.

He took a single silver before following the innkeeper, a sad smile appeared on the man's face when the Mage only took one silver.

The mage packed away his stuff before following the innkeeper, not forgetting to take the paper with orders for the Hunters on it.

The butler had already left by the time the Mage got back to the counter, a soft noise caught his attention. It came from a corridor to his left, a door stood ajar.

Alexander brought the Mage into the corridor before gesturing to the ajar door. The Mage gave a quick glance around to check if anything was wrong, no traps or hidden Hunters could be seen.

Only the sound of a woman crying could be heard.

Entering the room revealed a simple bedroom, a double and a single bed, drawers and an old rocking chair. In the single bed lay a child, next to the child a woman wept while caressing the child's face.

The thoughts of the people in this room differed wildly.

The man worrying if the Mage can help, the woman scared of losing her daughter, the child confused why her parents look so sad and finally the Mage.

He was considering if he should help by giving the child some medicine or by turning her into an undead. Finally, the idea of losing his place to sleep tonight swayed the Mage to help the poor child.

It was clear the child was ill, the room smelt of herbs and her skin looked like it was slowly turning grey. She was wrapped in blankets with a piece of wet cloth on her head.

The room was only lightly decorated, it had a fireplace which was burning logs of wood. The smell of herbs was nearly masked by the smell of burning wood.

'At least they know some basics.'

The Mage knelt next to the child while observing her, he wasn't a doctor or a member of the cloth. His knowledge of diseases was lacking but he had learnt somethings along his travels.

He took a vial out of his backpack before examining it, a murky green liquid sat in the small vial. It was only as big as his middle finger yet everyone had so much hope for it, inscribed onto the vial was an eye with a flower inside the iris.

The Mage brushed his fingers along its groves, lighting the Rune up with a white glow. When the Rune was completely activated, the iris of the eye turned green. He then took out another vial and did the same, the iris was red. No one would know that the seemingly identical potions had different purposes and effects.

Taking both of the vials to the child's lips, he slowly poured in the liquid into her mouth. She could barely swallow it even with how slowly he was pouring it, her movements were sluggish.

'I could make a lot of money if it weren't illegal to sell my potions.' A potion made by a Mage is ten times as effective as a potion made by a normal person, even if the ingredients were the same however to make sure that a potion is this effective the Mage must be the only person involved in the creation of the potion.

When the potion is uncorked, it loses its effectiveness within two minutes. This is the effect of the energy which Mages emit.

If he were to buy the same herbs in the market it would cost him 30 coppers at most to replace these two potions, this is how magical a mage is in the eyes of others.

It would take two maybe four hours to find the herbs needed for the potion if unlucky.

The Mage stored the two vials back into his bag, he had done the only thing he could do and therefore got up to leave.

"Will she be cured?" The woman managed to get out between sobs.

"I gave her something to help fight the disease then something to help her recover faster, it's now all on her to get better." The Mage didn't feel the need to continue so he went back into the inn.

He just caught one of the maids replacing his meal with a new one, he gave a nod in thanks as she passed him before sitting down to eat.
