Chapter 1: Chapter 01

Life is a spiraling brigade at my house.

So fuck it.

On the checklist, we've got everything from noisy brothers who can't keep their shitty undergarments in their room or avoid being half-naked all the time to donuts that have been sitting in the pantry since the start of summer break and aren't half-bad actually.

Being the only girl in this house, I've devoted most of my time to reading magazines and eating goldfish in my bedroom--abstaining from venturing into the half of the house ruled by half-exposed boys and sweaty T-shirts. I plop down on my bean bag with the latest edition of "Squirm: A Girl's To-Do List," and get through three or so pages (give or take) when my phone rings.

Angelica's passionate, summer voice springs through my phone, "Hey girl! Whatcha up to? I got Johnson and Patrick to stay over with me at my place for the semester, when are you hopping over, girl?!"

I jerk back to life and slip open my drawers frantically, "Ah! Sorry, Jelly! I completely forgot!" I rummage through my drawers and pull out a suitable pair of ripped jean shorts and a white cropped top with pastel stripes over the front. I shrug and pull the shirt over my head, it doesn't go well with my faded purple hair but I decide it's not appropriate to worry about fashion. I tap the diamond nose piercing on my node and pull a cap over the top half of my white-blonde hair.

Escaping out the front door, I skid down the streets and catch my breath when I get to Jelly's front door. I reach for the brass handle before something tugs it on the other end and it swings open. Jelly's standing there with her curly red hair, straight bangs, dark eyes, and large pair of golden hoops swinging from her ears.

She grabs my wrist and pulls me through the door, smiling ear to ear, "OMG girl! You missed out on so much!" I shake a small smile and she shoves me into the living room where her cousin's sitting on the couch with his chest showing. Jelly yaps at him to cover himself up a bit more when there are guests but I sigh and stare down at the empty space between my feet.

I've had a crush on Johnson since the start of middle school and after deciding I could never confess my sacred love for him, I decided I would never date him.

My mother didn't like him--she said he had bad habits, calling everybody around him 'bitches,' but then again, she's always been so protective. Until I had learned to rebel, she would lock anyone who dared say the word 'stupid' in her face into the backroom which was where the ghosts of the former residents haunted. I should've known some stupid fucking story about this house's "past residents" would have to be some real bullshit, but I was too young to understand anything concrete, so I took her word for it.

Then the story evolved and she somehow kept us away from that room. Until she died, that was, and Dad was lenient enough (or drunk enough) to let me stay back there. So the "backroom" is my room now.

And I hoped everything would change again, just like it had with my room, and Johnson would take some notice of me and fall in love with me, but all I've seen so far is him being lazy at Jelly's house, staying upstairs all day and forgetting to take showers 99% of the time.

Gross.
