Chapter 2: Prologue

You would think a lot of things about the apocalypse. Many assumptions had been made. Only one could have been right. But none of them were. They all said there would be screams, running, shouting, an uproar. There was none of that. Just silence. The pain arrived so fast you didn't feel anything, not even the pain that was supposed to be fading away. Then again, the apocalypse didn't really happen like it was supposed to. Nothing did.

Wow, that was morbid, you may be thinking. Besides, what gave me the right to relay such information about the future to you?

I lived. I lived through the apocalypse.  I have every right in the world. But your job is to make sure that what happened here does not, and I repeat, does not happen in your future. Unless you wish to have every loved one you have snatched away from you in a cover of darkness and your heart to be broken, then by all means, close this book. But don't worry.

     That isn't a threat.

     Only a promise.

Another promise: continue reading and the future will be safe. Or at least one version of you. That creates a parallel universe, one where you chose to put the book down and the other where you read on and changed your destiny for the better. Unless you have inter-dimensional transport (there are some perks to Armageddon) like myself, then this future won't be a problem for you, only a science fiction novel, used to scare children before their bedtimes and tease at the idea of another reality. Used for passing the time or, possibly, a book report.

Then again, you might not care much for reading and you use this book for tinder on a cold winter's night. It would probably work pretty good for that, in all honesty. But then you couldn't hear my wise words. Or read them, in this case. And that, my dear friend in the past, you will pay dearly for.

     Not a threat.

     Just a promise.

But today was different. Today was our day to escape. By "our" I mean my new family. By "escape" I mean leave the hellish planet I once called home. The thing was, though, that no matter  how far you go, as long as there are human beings,  a little bit of earth goes with you. I learned this the hard way, so I hope that by reading this lovely little book, you won't have to do the same. Because trust me.

     The hard way sucks.

I suppose I have to tell you the rest, huh? How the hard way happened. That way you can  be safe. Your future changed.

Being faced with such a daunting task as this, I found myself pondering an important, profound, question.

Where the hell do I start?
