Chapter 2: O Mother in Heaven
"[static] Attention, People of The Behemoth. [static] We are preparing for an engagement with brood mother BM-126. All citizen are to go to nearest shelter. I repeat, [static] All citizen are to go to nearest shelter [static]. May [static] be with you! [static] All Hail Humanity! [static].
The sound of sirens, the dreadful faces, people were running around in an ordered manner. We are at war and a battle were about to take place. The safety of the citizen of Behemoth are the most important thus many shelter with an incredible strong armor were built. Some of them can even be launched to space thus acting like an escape pod.
After testing the new mech VK-M2, The Director were confident that we can take The Scourge brood mother BM-126. As you can imagine, there were many scourge brood mother and BM-126 were one of them and she is our objective. The Celest made a promise to The Behemoth that if we were able to kill BM-126, we are relieved from our military duty thus freeing The Behemoth and her people. While we were bonded to our Last Testament with The Celest, we believed that someday, we will fulfill our duty and granted freedom as our brothers and sister back on our home planet.
That day was supposed to be "The Day of Our Lord". A day when our nemesis be finally vanquished, BM-126. What we didn't know however, we were sailing straight to our doom.
"Mom, where are we going"
"Its okay, we are gonna be safe"
We were running to the nearest shelter. I saw many UrbanMech UM-1B that were used by The Garrison to defend the citizen inside incase The Wings outside the ship let a few Scourge drones trough.
"This way maam!"
"Mom, where are we going? Why is everybody running?"
"Its okay sweetheart, mom is with you okay. we gonna play that toy you got from master Johan tomorrow okay?"
"Its not a toy mom!"
We followed the officer instruction. Before long, we arrived in front of a gigantic gate. Inside were many people. Some looks concerned, some with dreaded face. Some made jokes while other shouting at each other.
"Here sweetheart, look at what i got you"
"Uuuhh, its pan bread"
"its your favorite"
My mom gave me that bread with a smile on her face. she looked exhausted. her face looked like someone who were about to face her death. she looked up to me once in a while, occasionally hugged me and i hugged her back.
"No sweetheart, Johan told me you wanted to be a mech pilot"
"Mom.."
She looked at me for a while. She was waiting for an answer from me. Being a mech pilot is a dangerous job after all.
"Mom, are you upset that i wanted to be a mech pilot?"
"Not at all sweetheart, your father is a mech pilot you know"
"Really mom? I have never met father before, what is he like?"
"He is.. he is.. he is strong and dependable. I am sure you gonna grow up like yoir father"
"Really? Yeah.. i am gonna be a mech pilot"
I knew little about my father that day. All i knew was that mom is no longer with him. I didn't know. Not until later.
"But mom, why dad never visit us? Johan's dad visit him once in a while. I mean Johan's dad and Johan even visited us once in a while"
"Well, He is.. He.."
My mom couldn't answer and i was curious. Her eyes were full with tears but not enough to make it drop. She hugged me tightly.
"Its okay sweetheart, you will know when the time is right okay? Noe, we need to stick to each other. The two of us okay"
"uhh.. okay mom.."
Many people used to considere the offensive that day to be suicide. Apparently, before i was born, similar thing happened and many people died. They were afraid that this time things gonna be the same as before... and they were right.
We waited and waited. i hugged my mom so tight. I was afraid, and i was right to be afraid. Not long after that. A loud bang can be heard. It was the sound of an AutoCannon from UM-1B.
"*Bang! *Bang!"
"Don't let it get inside! shoot everything you got!"
"[static] DAMN you fuck... just [static] already. [static] i have a [static] to get [static] back [static]"
The Wings had let some drones went inside the ship and one of those drone were in front of our shelter's door. While the door was small it act as a weak point to the whole shelter structure.
I was terrified. My mom hugged me so tight i couldn't breath. Then, another bang could be heard. But that wasn't from an AutoCannon rather something is banging the giant gate.
"The door! Protect the door!"
"[static] Shit! [static] The door is lost [static] protect the cit[static] Shit!! [bang] Urgg!! [static]"
Everyone panicked. It was chaotic, people were running around. My mother held me tight and we were running to an emergency exit. All of the people inside The Shelter did the same. It became much more chaotic when a gigantic shadowy figure ripped apart the door and the wall. That was the first time i saw a Scourge drone. That giant body, bulging eye, razor sharp teeth, tentacle petruding from parts of its body. I was terrified, we were, all of us.
All hope was lost. We were certainly be dead. My mother did her best to close my eyes so i couldn't see the nightmare in front of me. I saw some people minched underneath the drone's limb. Some melted from its bodily fluid. It was chewing on the mech that was supposed to guard us.
When it finished chewing that UrbanMech. It sprayed its bodily fluid everywhere, melting anything it latched unto. My mother stopped and we tumbled to the ground. I cried, and cried aloud. Many begged for help. Many prayed, and just like that, The Lord heard their prayer.
A VK-M2 Mech suddenly landed on top of that drone. It did an Alpha Strike, firing all of its weapon at the drone. Two ShortMissile from its right arm and a ShortLaser form its left. But that wasn't enough.
"[static] Those bastard [static] didn't even [static] job correctly [static]"
The drone slamed that mech to the ground. That drone was bleeding and its blood melted the floor. Then a second mech came, a UM-1B UrbanMech. It fired a Large AutoCannon from its shoulder to the droid, but it missed.
"[static] Manny!! shi- [static] just [static] already you [static] piece [static] shit!!"
The Mech reloaded its AutoCanon and began to try another shot. But its was too late, the drone used strange telekinetic power and slamed that mech on to the floor. The drone was starting to lose its balance. Then, the VK-2M from before managed to get up. the mech thrusted its iconic sword to the drone's body then slashed it. It finally tumbled to the ground. that mech then slashed what appeared to be the drone's neck. The drone then tumbled to the ground with what appeared as its head detached from its body.
"[static] Die you [static] shit!! [static]"
The day was saved. Everyone at the shelter that day couldn't believed what they just saw. Many people died. Yet for a moment there was a glimpse light of hope. But for me, everything went from dark to darkest.
"Mom.. Mom.. I am afraid... Mom... Mom.."
I called my mother that was beside me. she didn't budge. Only then i realized, my mother was no longer with me. What lies beside me was a carcass of what used to be a human with its side melted. I stood in horror as i saw that. I tried to cried, yet i couldn't. I was afraid. Afraid.... Afraid...
"Mom.. Mom.. wake up.. MOM!!! MOM!! Huhh.. huh... haaaaaaaaa....."
I didn't remember what happened after that. Everything went dark. It seemed like no life is worth living anymore. I was but a child. Life was hard with mother and i couldn't imagined living alone. Mom, even today, i still wonder why i didn't go to heaven with you that day. Perhaps, just perhaps, we can finally meet again.
