Chapter 35: Change of Plans

John gets up from the bench, letting out a heavy sigh just as Nokosi and Rudolph return. The uneasy expression on Nokosi's face peaks his interest as he walks up to the truck. He opens the back passenger door and climbs inside. "So, what's the plan?"

Nokosi looks around, as if someone might be spying on them before taking off around. He uses t=he rearview mirror to glace at John, "We're gonna break in at night,"

John sits there for a second, taken back by the confidence Nokosi has saying what he just did. The only thing he can say is, "What?"

"There's a lot less people at night and finding anti-venom shouldn't be too hard, we can just use our noses,"

"That is a, stupid, idea. We can't just go in and rely on scent for something like this," John gestures to the building, "It's gonna be in some tube probably, and no doubt stored some place secure, and possibly refrigerated. As if that wouldn't make it hard enough, the place is filled with people with various sicknesses and wretched body odors, and everything is coated with disinfectants regularly…Do you even know what anti-venom smells like?"

"...No, but what do, you, suppose we do?" He responds, getting irritated.

"Figure out where the anti-venom is, then break in at night,"

"Daisy's used anti-venom before, she once showed me pictures of a patient who suffered from a snake bite,"

"But would she even tell you?" John looks at Nokosi through the rearview mirror. It isn't hard to notice Nokosi's sudden shift at the question.

"...Yeah, yeah, we're still good friends," He replies, eyes focused on the road as he feels John's gaze. Rudolph glances over at Nokosi. John sits back, trying to think of any other way, but struggles to come up with anything.

His mom might know something about the anti-venom's whereabouts, but how the hell would he get her to tell him? There's no way not to seem suspicious looking for something like that and she no doubt still needs a bit of time to digest the whole, "Your son's not entirely a murderer, he's a werewolf," thing. It's a shot in the dark while being blindfolded to try and explain everything about the tree guy, this supernatural infection thing, and how he's sort of stuck with two other werewolves. That won't just make her head explode at all.

"Uh, are you, okay?" Rudolph asks, snapping him out of his thoughts.

"Just trying to figure out how the hell to make this all work." He responds with a shake of his head. Nokosi clearly isn't on Daisy's good side, so it's unlikely she'll tell him…but maybe she'd tell John. It'll also give him a chance to learn more about Nokosi and possibly his tribe. Nokosi isn't a threat, but his tribe certainly might be one, and he needs to learn about their whereabouts before the full moon, lest he accidentally intrude on their territory while trying to find some place to seclude himself for the night.

"Do you got anything?" Nokosi asks as they stop at a red light. John glances down, the radio's clock catches his eye. Daisy went to lunch around the same time as his mom, so there's a chance they get off at the same time…

"Maybe, we'll have to stop at my mom's house though. Make a left at the next light,"

Nokosi follows his directions, and after a good twenty minutes they arrive at the edge of town by a large forest where the houses are a more spread out, giving every home a very large yard. They pull into one with several large trailers parked in the far back of the yard.

"Keep the truck on, it'll only be a minute," John states as he jumps out and walks up to the front door. It's unlocked as usual. Stepping inside he finds himself getting hit in the chest by the same wave of nostalgia he had back when he visited all that time ago. He shakes off the feeling, pushing himself to his old bedroom. Untouched, dust covering most surfaces. Approaching his desk, he finds his wallet and phone sitting on it, still plugged into a charger. They'd been confiscated when he was arrested, and as he guessed, his mother took it. He checks his wallet, a good amount of cash in it, then unplugs his phone, the screen turning on for the first time in awhile. The screensaver is a picture of him with his family before going to boot camp.

He chuckles a bit seeing how much smaller and skinnier he was. His younger self never would've guessed he'd become around one hundred and seventy pounds of muscle, and a bloodthirsty werewolf. The amount of missed calls, text messages, and voice mails catches his attention. Damn near a hundred new texts, all from his family. Most of them are things they use to ask him all the time. Thoughts on how something looks, this or that questions, and if he'd seen something. What's it say about you when your family has trouble telling the difference between you not being around because you're in prison and you just not socializing with them? Maybe he turned into a werewolf that day because he's always been such a lone wolf…

He gets rid of the notifications and puts the phone in his pocket with a heavy sigh before looking around his room once more. He made a promise to Yfen he'd come back to Washington once he made sure his family'd be safe, but how the hell is he suppose to do that if he's not around? There's a lot more to this world he's just starting to learn about, and he can't just uproot his whole family for something like that. Maybe by the time he finally figures everything out, Yfen won't need his help anymore.

"Anyone else hungry? I could go for some lunch right about now," John states as he gets back in the truck.

"Uh, sure, what do you guys wanna-" Nokosi is interrupted by his phone suddenly going off. He picks up his phone, a hint of worry in his eye when he reads whoever is trying to call him, "Hello?" Despite the volume being at its lowest, John's still able to listen in while he pretends to ignore it.

"We found something we need you to investigate," The voice is deep, almost like the voices used for "obvious bad guy" characters in shows and movies. Something about it is, familiar though, but if it he wouldn't be able to pin point it cause it's coming from a phone speaker.

"Alright what is it?"

"Meet me at out regular spot, I'll tell you more there,"

Nokosi glances over at Rudolph and John before looking away from them again, "Alright, but it'll be a minute, I got some, Karens, I gotta deal with,"

"Hah, good luck!"

"Thanks…" And with that Nokosi hangs up.

"Lunch?" John asks.

"Change of plans. I got stuff at my house, you guys can whip up something there for lunch,"

"Your house?" Rudolph asks, his face becoming a bit pale.

"Yeah, I got called into work for something and I gotta change into my uniform, one that doesn't have blood on it. I'm not turning you in," He assures Rudolph, "I just wanna make sure you two are someplace secure," Throwing the truck into reverse, they back up onto the road and head back to town.
