Chapter 37: Adam and Eve?
"You said I was the first person other than your brothers that you've met with this mutant power." Arthur said after listening to Howard's whole description of their species, "You really are something else to figure all that with just the limited resources you had."
"I had to be," Howard said with a straight face as he steered to the right, along the way he met with some fellow soldiers who they had fought alongside just before and using the papers he had Steve get before about their identification and short contact with the captain of the team they met before, Howard got his way and burrowed the vehicle. "I study endlessly, after all, there is so much to know and so much to do. I wanted to be prepared for the future but I guess I am still not good enough."
"Why so?"
"With the threat of Ares, I realized that this world is much more fucked up than I thought before. First Selene, then Diana, I was living in ignorance. I was much naive, I mean the satellite was my last card if it fails I have nothing else to give so I am not really prepared for a world-destroying threat. DC, Marvel, and Underworld, what else are they gonna dump on me?"
"D-C? Satellite? What are you talking about?"
"Nothing, I just wanted to vent. It's been a long day." Howard shook his head as he stared at Arthur, "So what about you? You said you'll decide whether or not you want to stay and work with me after this, so what're your plans?"
"I think I have to pass." Arthur said looking the other way not able to match his eye, "This all is too much for me. I know you want to use my ability to make me into a spy or a soldier but this isn't me. I want peace."
"Destruction doesn't really help with peace." Howard chuckled, "I mean, Ares ideology, he wants to end all human life for peace as if that will work. The way he looks at things, I am sure even animals wouldn't survive his wrath."
"I don't think he wants to kill them all." Arthur defended, "Maybe start fresh, with only good people?"
"Rewrite the world?" Howard shook his head, "No matter what he does, everything will always draw to the same conclusion. Humans will always be the same."
"We won't know that for sure." Arthur said, "With proper guidance and education from the start, we might all unify and find peace once and for all."
"So is that what Ares promised you? To be his Adam in this new world?" Howard said with a casual expression, "You can ask me if you want some suggestions for Eve."
"So what now? You want to kill me?" Arthur said his eyes shaking, he had picked up hints along with the conversation and was just waiting for the reveal but he still couldn't help but feel a little scared when the moment came.
"For how long?" Howard asked instead of answering his question,
"After the first night, your brothers chased me." Arthur said, "We had caused quite a scene and due to your brother's involvement, Ares had become curious about me. So he came to see me and I've been reporting to him ever since."
"Ouch! You really are hurting my feelings, Arthur." Howard said, "You've even surpassed my expectations, you're a good enough actor. And to think you and him were always a step ahead."
"That's right." Arthur said, "And that's why I am on his side and not yours. It's hard, isn't it, for a person so prideful like you. But what even worse is that I can disappear in an instant at any moment and you would never be able to catch me. So you can't even take revenge."
Howard stopped the car as he looked tense, "And here I was thinking I could change your mind."
"You might be able to shoot me but what if I disappear?" Arthur said seeing Howard reaching for his gun, "I can get under the car before you even pull out your gun and after this, I am gone forever. Face it, Howard, I am the only one you can't kill your way through. Just like how I can't kill you, we're different predators not meant to hunt one another."
"I could just wait for you to die? Old age can be a bitch sometimes."
"I have a god by my side, I don't think mortality is an issue."
"Good point." Howard nodded, "So you just going to wait out here for Ares to finish us off, so you could be his little bitch?"
"Or I can just take your gun away from you this instant." Arthur moved his way towards his gun. Howard tried to grab his arm but his hand just passed through as Arthur got hold of his gun. "-And kill the remaining others like Diana and so, I am sure Ares would be quite pleased."
Unlike how he thought, Howard smiled widely. Arthur got a gut feeling something was wrong as he tried to slip away and phase through the car but to his fear his hands got stuck inside the car as it couldn't phase through like the rest of his body. Before he could let go of the gun that seemed to be holding back someone came from behind passing through him as none other than Artemis cuffed his hands to the car's door with a handcuff.
"Gold plated gun and handcuffs, it seems you really are weak to gold." Howard smiled as he looked at Arthur's expression, "How could I have known when I have never seen it for myself, right? I didn't but I am damn sure lucky K got this information correct. And after all my explanation about justifying why I want to be ready to kill even my brothers, you didn't think I would be just as prepared for you? A mutant I know nothing about?"
Arthur tried to pull his arms away but he couldn't after all, strength was never his best suit. "It's better if you kill me because if you don't when the time comes, you'll regret it. Ares is sure to doom you all. I have seen what you did and your punishment would be just as worse."
"Calm down, he's Ares, not Lucifer." Howard rolled his eyes, "As I said I won't kill you. But I am damn sure you'll be begging for it."
"You told me proudly that you never lied, so guess your image is falling apart huh?" Arthur sneered staring at Artemis.
"I never lied, she really did stab me to the wall all the way through my heart." Howard said, "I just went for a little misdirect, that's all."
