Chapter 57: A very normal salute

*Clang!*

Sparks flew as blades clashed. Despite the three pronged assault, the Night Knight did not waver and even managed to halt all of them, keeping them from passing to the battlements. Guards had already shown up to watch this battle as they filled the parapet, restricting the battle area.

The Night Knight was at the Steel Will rank and was extremely skilled as well. Most Knights part of the Night Order were at this rank with few being Silver Strength, and all of them are well versed in their weapon expertise. Being called the Night Order, it was obvious that the Knights would excel when placed under the night sky and rightfully so because although most of the elite Knight Orders were similar in that they had talented Knights, they were separated by the affinity their Knights had. And the Night Knights were unparalleled when basked in the night, being capable of fighting a platoon of soldiers single handedly. As expected of an elite Knight Order of the Moonshine Kingdom.

*Zing!*

As the three finally made headway against the Night Knight and prepared to flee, a spell was slung rather horribly at Jeffrey as it zipped right past him and hit a poor guard. Electrocuting, then paralysing him. He flopped to the ground motionless as his buddies moved to support him, he seemed pretty dead.

Looking in the direction of the spell, he saw a bloody figure, engulfed in a murderous aura that nearly seemed tangible.

It was the Hero!

Walking along the parapet, the Hero was in stride with Alais with a Knight trailing behind him. The city lord had sent them up on the walls not only to guard them but so that he would be less of a hindrance in the elimination of the Heretic. It was seen before that the Hero possessed no sense of responsibility, unleashing devastating magic haphazardly resulting in the deaths of dozens of civilians and footmen. As such, the city lord placed him here, betting that nothing would happen here, and the Hero would do nothing stupid.

How wrong he was.

As he strode forward, the Hero tripped on a boot, just hanging out of the stairway. Looking at the owner, he was met with a pleasant surprise.

"Urh, what?"

He uttered a stupid response before he was shanked consecutively, and the assailant having realised that his previous attacks were meaningless, aimed at his head. Yamada was still stunned as he watched the knife slowly inch toward his throat. Time seemed to crawl, as thoughts sped through his head.

Am I going to die?

He had a rather stupid realisation as his throat was about to be slit. However, that time wouldn't be coming, well at least not today. The knife drew blood, as a body fell to the ground. However, it was not Yamada's.

"ALAISS!"

Unaware of the new notification, rage blinded Yamada, as red filled his eyes. Activating {Limit Break}, he looked toward the battle that was ensuing. Currently, it was a stalemate, with the Knight barely keeping the trio at bay.

Lunging at Savage, the Hero started his mad counterattack. Cutting and slashing with the aid of the System, Yamada was instantly able to unload solid damage onto Savage due to the surprise attack. As Yamada was about to press on, he jumped back as several essence blades landed at his previous position. His enhanced instinct as a result of {Limit Break} allowed him to detect the danger held within those blades.

But that wouldn't be enough to stop him! He would make sure that Alais had her vengeance, that the Savage would die. Not just to avenge Alais, but to also qualm his erupting anger.

Facing the barrage of attacks from the Hero and the Knight's follow-up assault was placed in a terrible position. As Jeffrey moved to intercept the Hero, it only brought a brief moment of respite, of which Savage took the chance to urge Jeffey to leave.

"Leave," Short and curt.

Looking between Savage and their growing enemies, Jeffrey was conflicted.

To stay and help this noble comrade, or to leave this battle to fight another day?

Savage was probably one of the only people to ever stick up for him, so wouldn't leaving now be like he was abandoning Savage, after all he had done for him? But then, Savage did say to run, and it would be rather rude when Savage was giving genuine advice only for Jeffrey to ignore it.

However, the time he had to contemplate was nil, as the battle immediately resumed, with the Hero ripping at Savage. His strength had been boosted by an insane margin, at least three times his previous strength, however, such a power up shouldn't last long, right?

Nonetheless, the situation slowly turned graver by the second, as more guards came and blocked off their retreat, then higher level combatants would come and finish them off. It was a dire situation, and decisive action had to be taken.

And Savage was the one to take that action. Savage launched himself at the Hero sacrificing all defensive actions as he locked his arms around the Hero, restraining them both. This wouldn't last long as the Knight came to hack Savage off.

"Go!" Savage shouted as the blue glint in his eyes turned brighter.

He had made an effective opening for Jeffrey to flee in relative safety, but Savage would most certainly be killed here. In this split moment, Jeffrey decided, he decided that he would not let his earnest sacrifice be in vain.

"I won't forget you," Jeffrey paid his respects, as he raced to the battlements, and vaulted over them. Sliding down the wall, he shoved his machete into the cracks of the wall to slow his descent.

Running from the wall, Jeffrey looked back once more to see chaos happening on the walls as bodies constantly flew off them and sporadic detonations across the battlements.

I won't forget your noble sacrifice.

Putting his right fist to his chest with his left fist resting behind his back, Jeffrey performed a salute. A foreign salute that he felt was innately appropriate for such a situation. One day, he would avenge this noble man whom everyone called a fiend.
