Chapter 55: CHAPTER 54
RUBY ROSE POV
"The Exams are finally over!!!" she cheered.
"YAY!!!" Jaune cheered with her.
"Yay!!" Nora cheered with them.
"You three are beyond saving," Weiss commented from the side as she gave them a disapproving look.
"Let them have their moment Weiss." Pyrrha said as she hid an amused smile at their antics.
"Yeah. Weiss Cream. Why don't you 'chill' down a little bit." Yang said and everyone at the table groaned at her pun "Huh... Huh… Anyone?"
No one paid her any mind and Yang finally deflated in the end.
From there the talks dissolved to mundane topics like the new students arriving from the other academies, the series of robberies done by the infamous criminal Roman Torchwick & White Fang, and the Upcoming Vytal tournament which she was very excited about.
Until she noticed a missing person.
"Hey, Yang. Where's Blake?" she asked.
"I… actually haven't seen her since last evening," Yang said in a guilt-filled expression.
And she knew that her sister and Blake weren't close but this…
"Yang. You're telling me that Blake's been missing since last night and you have no idea where she might be."
Yang cringed "Ahaha. I mean… I just assumed that she might have gone with one of her Faunus friends."
"Excuse me!" Weiss said with narrowed eyes "What do you mean by Faunus friends."
Oh ohh.
Yang either didn't notice Weiss' expression or didn't care because she continued to speak "Yeah. Who would've thought that she was hiding cat ears under that head bow of hers? Turns out that Ren knew from the start but just didn't want to confront her about it."
"You're telling me that there was a Faunus hiding under our noses all this time!" Weiss said as she slammed her hand on the table. Oh no…
And now the people from the other tables were staring at them.
"Weiss. Stop it." She whispered.
"Ruby! This is no time to stop." Weiss said "Blake could be a member of the White Fang for all we know."
"Weiss-" Yang started to say but then paused as Jaune started chuckling to himself.
"What?" Weiss asked.
"Oh. Nothing. It's just. I'm Weiss Schnee and if there was a Faunus around me then I would know." Jaune said with an amused expression.
"That's not what I- wait! You knew about her?"
She looked between Jaune and Ren, wondering how those two noticed it when the rest of them had no idea.
Maybe it was why they were the leaders of their teams and not her or Weiss.
Jaune shrugged "I did. I was just waiting to see how long it'll take for you guys to figure it out on your own. Damn! Now I'll never know the answer."
"Jaune. How did you know about her?" she asked.
"Oh~ Do you really want to know?"
She nodded.
Jaune moved forward, making everyone at the table pay attention to him as he finally spoke "She smelled fishy."
There was silence at the table before Yang's smile widened to a frightening degree, Weiss looked horrified, she groaned, Ren looked indifferent, Nora looked amused and Pyrrha facepalmed.
Jaune raised his hands in surrender "Sorry sorry. This is just Yang's bad influence rubbing off on me."
"Hey! I am a good influence." Yang protested to which Weiss scoffed.
"But really, how did you know Jaune?" she asked.
"Noticed her bow twitching once," Jaune said with a careless shrug.
Yang face palmed herself "How did I not notice that?"
"It's alright Yang. You couldn't have known." Jaune said with sympathy "You're not very smart after all."
"Hey Screw you!" Yang said but there was no venom in her voice.
"Are you guys not forgetting something?" Weiss asked.
"Yeah." She agreed "We still need to find her. She might be in danger for all we know."
"What? No! That's not that I meant." Weiss said and she looked at her partner in confusion. "I mean… she might be a White Fang member. How are we going to deal with her once she returns."
"We should hang her," Jaune said and she gave a horrified look to her team leader.
"What?!" Weiss asked, looking shocked.
"What?" Jaune asked with faux casualness "She is a Faunus. And someone who hid her identity as a Faunus because of the clear racism against them. How dare she do that? This is clearly a crime worthy of death. We should definitely hang her once she returns. What do you say Pyrrha?"
"I don't know Jaune." Pyrrha said with an amused smile "I think we should be a little merciful. She might be an animal but she is still a sentient animal. I say we go with beheading. Quick and painless."
"Nah!" Jaune shook his head "She's a Faunus. She clearly eats babies for breakfast and kicks puppies during her free time. We can't let her go this easily. I say we stab her in the eyes and then-" "JAUNE!" she exclaimed, a little horrified by how these talks had turned out to be.
Jaune looked at her and grimaced "A little too much? I'm sorry Ruby."
She shook her head "You don't need to be sorry Jaune. Just… please don't do any of those things you just said to Blake."
"Of course not Ruby. I'm a merciful person. I'll only just-" "Jaune." She said, her eyes narrowed in warning.
Jaune's smirk widened "Oh… my Rubaby is so cute when she's angry." He said and then he started pulling at her cheeks again.
"Hey! Stop bullying my little sister." Yang said and before she could thank her for the verbal support, Yang continued "Only I can bully her."
"You're both horrible." She said as Jaune finally let go of her cheeks and sat back down on his seat. And she definitely didn't pout.
She turned to look at Weiss and noticed that her partner was now looking morosely at her food.
"Weiss. Are you-"
"I'm going back to the room." Weiss said before she got up from her seat and left.
She stood up to follow her but was stopped by Jaune.
"Let her go, Ruby. She needs some space for herself."
"But-"
"Not buts Ruby. Sit." He ordered and she pouted before sitting on the seat.
There was silence on the table for a moment before Jaune spoke.
"Weiss… has a bit of history with Faunus. Especially the White Fang." Jaune said, his voice somber "I don't think she appreciated us making fun of her hatred for them." Then he sighed "Don't worry Ruby. I'll go talk with her after a while. Make sure that she's okay. Maybe we'll have a miracle and she'll even stop hating the Faunus as a race."
Their table was quiet for the rest of the lunch after which Jaune left to talk with Weiss.
By evening, Weiss was back to herself once again. And while she had a feeling that Weiss still didn't like the White Fang very much, she didn't hate Blake by association.
