Chapter 2: Gnome the Elf

"Welcome, Player." There is an elf-looking creature speaking to me with a high pitched voice. She has forest green hair in two braids, pale skin, pale green eyes, a pink, flowery blouse, brown pants, and black boots. Before we begin, please read the terms and conditions for Great Elements." A large scroll pops up in front of me. I skim through the words, barely understanding what it's saying. After a minute or so, I tell her I'm done.

"Great! I'm Gnome, what's your name?"

'Her hair looks super fluffy...' I think to myself, so I reach down to touch her braids. She looks to be about 3 feet tall, so I end up crouching to do so. "Teehee!" She giggles. When I feel her hair, it does indeed feel fluffy.

"Oh yeah! My name is Alex, nice to meet you Gnome!" I say. Gnome looks at me for a moment before saying, "I'm sorry, can I call you something else? I already know somebody named Alex."

Interesting.

"Oh, that's okay. Can I tell you later? I need time to think up a new one." I ask her. I'm super bad at making up names, so I need all the time I can get.

"Oh sure! Then which element would you like to control?" She says as a screen pops up showing this:

Fire - Increases your Strength by 50%

Water - Increases your Health by 50%

Earth - Increases your Defense by 50%

Air - Increases your Agility by 50%

Obviously, I pick Air. After all, I need all the speed I can get to RUN AWAY. Next I get to choose my race. The screen says, "Natural Races(Air)" which makes me wonder what the other races would have been. My list shows multiple races like Elf, Fairy, and Angels. I start clicking away, scrolling through races, clothes, and bodily features while clicking 'favorite' on some and wearing others. I ended up with a female Elf with long red hair, green eyes, pale skin, and tiny features. The list of ages said that as an Elf, she could be 10 to 800 years old. I choose 10 because if I ended up running away from monsters, I'd look like a kid rather than a fully grown adult or worse, an elderly person. Don't get me wrong, I love old people, but there are few benefits to being an old man/woman. Not to mention, as a child(and an elf at that)

Lastly, my status. Apparently I get to increase my stats with the 20 points I got from... playing the game? I don't know, but my status screen looks like this:

Your Avatar

[Insert Name]

Rank: (Noob)9999+

HP: 100/100

MP: 100/100

Points: 20

Strength: 0

Vitality: 0

Agility: 0

Stamina: 0

Intelligence: 0

Willpower: 0

Luck: 0

Charisma: 0

Of course I'm going to have Agility be my highest stat! I suppose I should probably give my other stats some point so I'm not a lost cause.

I click around for a bit and end up with this:

Points: 0

Strength: 1

Vitality: 1

Agility: 13

Stamina: 1

Intelligence: 1

Willpower: 1

Luck: 1

Charisma: 1

I really am an evil genius! I mean, I knew it from the start, but this just proves it. I've heard that stamina is very important, but I'd prefer running extremely fast for 2 seconds and be miles away, rather than being able to run for a bit but still be pretty slow. In that case, stamina is useless!

"Interesting choice! Have you thought of a name that I could call you by?" Gnome asks me.

Oh.

"I-I... of course!" I exclaim as I try to make myself as believable as possible.

"Great! What is it?"

"My name is... Alex? Oh, sorry! I forgot you already couldn't call me that. Heehee! Silly me!" I scratch the back of my neck. "Uh, give me a moment to think of a new one please."

"Sure thing!" She snaps her fingers and we are teleported to a library. She places a large book in front of me. I look at the cover and on the plain white background, it says, 'Unique, Unused Player Names,' in front of me. As I open the book, I see a few names disappearing every now and then. I flip to the bottom half of the book, where the names that start with 'V' are. Then I realized something. Did she know that I hadn't come up with a name yet?

"I figured you didn't actually come up with a name yet so I decided to help you out!" Gnome says. I look at her, puzzled. 'Is she psychic? A mind reader?'

Gnome just responds with a "Teehee" and a wink.

Witch...

I continue to flip through the pages for a few minutes, looking for a cute, somewhat approachable name that just screams "I don't deserve to die!" Finally, my eyes rest on a name. Wendigo. 'Isn't that a tiny faery creature or something? It sounds familiar.'

I look up at Gnome and say, "You can call me... Wendigo."

Gnome looks at me for a moment and says, "I'm sorry, can I call you something else? I already know somebody named Wendigo."

'What?!' "B-but I swear, I just saw that name in here." I stutter a little and look down. Where Wendigo once was, is now blank.

'How annoying,' I frown.

"Um, how about Wendy?" I say after flipping another page. Yet again...

"I'm sorry, can I call you something else? I already know somebody named Wendy."

I bite my lip, irritated, and point to 4 other names. Over and over, she says the same thing.

Ok now I was ready to punch someone.

I don't even notice it but from the way Gnome had this look that said, 'If I could, I would walk away from you,' I probably looked very intimidating.

*sigh*

I flip to a random page in the book and point to a random name. "I want this name then." I was not a happy camper.

Gnome finally smiles and says, "Ok! Then PsychoManiac, welcome to Great Elements!"

Note to self: Think before you speak.
