Chapter 2: 2

"Igwe!!!!¹"

The council members bowed and greeted the king while he waved his fan lazily and told them to sit. This was the second time they were seeing this lazy king but they could not say anything for the fear of being beheaded. They looked at him with disdain waiting for him to say something to begin the meeting while wondering how and why they went through with the coronation.

Ikemefuna would have been a better king! He is the late king's younger brother, he has the right to sit on the throne instead of this boy still sucking his mother's breasts. Such a big disgrace! The gods should just strike him dead, I dont care if he's the late king's son... Just take a look at him, our enemies will laugh at us when we go to war-, Mazi Uchemba was still thinking when his name was called.

"Yes, my king I agree to what you have said", he replied while nodding his head like a chicken pecking rice.

"Hahahahahaha", the elders could not take it and laughed out forgetting it was an offence to laugh in the palace when the king was not laughing.

Ikenna, the King, was not finding anything funny, he hated the way the council looked down on him and always found excuses to punish them. He smiled evily and nodded to the guards to punish them, their screams and pleading was always music to his ears.

It is not my fault my father died, this stupid Uchemba will be looking at me as if he is better than me. If I give him this position, now he will be fumbling. I am just 16 years old, I'm supposed to be living a carefree life not to be tied on this stupid seat till 25 or thereabout. I am tired, all these court meetings are draining and instead of Ekenne to be here doing his job, he is playing around with the maidens of the palace. Now i have to act like him and do his job.... this life ehn!, Ikenna lamented in his heart.

He signalled the guards to bring them back and tried to understand why they were in the palace instead of their various houses cooking and eating meat.

"Igwe, we are here to tell you about the happenings in this village. Everybody is scared and some are even trying to flee the village, this is so sad Igwe. So we as the council of elders are here to ask for solutions."

"Yes, the Onowu² is right. Igwe we need solutions"

"Mazi Uchemba, calm down and let the Igwe say something"

"Well my elders, as you can see I am still young and need guidance but I know this issue needs to be taken to the chief priest besides, what even happened?"

"Yes, Igwe the dancer Adanna died last night-"

"Ehen, people die everyday... Why should we be worried?"

"Ehm, Igwe I know but, the death was not ordinary... Her parents said they did not hear anything but the front of her hut is filled with fresh blood and her body is no where to be seen, the blood still drips from the walls but when we entered her hut the bed was freezing cold meaning her death was not this morning."

"I am impressed by your knowledge of dead bodies Onowu, since that is the case let us head off to the shrine to look for some answers".

Getting to the shrine, they were all scared by what they saw.

1. Igwe- king

2. Onowu- title for the head of chiefs
