After meeting Phoebe and gaining a Sableye onto her team, Ashlyn and her friends are heading towards the Dewford Gym. Ashlyn was excited about this gym battle. She couldn't wait to see Alain, May and Max's reaction when they meet Keiko.
"Please tell us who you're using for the Dewford gym, Ashlyn!" Max pleaded, walking backwards in front of Ashlyn.
"Sorry, Max. You'll have to wait until we get there." Ashlyn apologized.
"Oh man." Max groaned.
At that moment, he bumped into someone which made him stop.
"Oh sorry kid. Didn't see you there." A male voice apologized.
The gang turned to the voice and saw a large, muscular man. He has fair skin, brown eyes, and short brown hair, along with a large, spiky moustache. He was shirtless and doesn't wear any shoes. Ashlyn blinked twice before she finally recognized this man. It was Chuck the Cianwood Gym Leader!
"Don't worry about it. I wasn't looking where I was going." Max rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.
"You certainly weren't." May retorted.
"Chuck?!" Brock exclaimed, surprised.
"Oh, Ashlyn and Brock! Good to see you all." Chuck greeted.
"Hi Chuck!" Ashlyn greeted back.
"Do you know this guy?" May asked.
"Yes, Chuck is the Cianwood City Gym leader in the Johto Region." Brock replied.
"Cool!" Max beamed.
"So what are you doing here, Chuck?" Ashlyn asked.
Chuck chuckled, "Well I'm here to see a former student of mine." He answered.
"Who is he?" May asked.
"Brawly, the gym leader of the Dewford Gym." Chuck replied.
"Wow." The gang was in awe.
"I thought I'd come here and see how he trains his Pokémon." Chuck explained.
"Well I'm here to challenge him to a gym battle." Ashlyn stated.
"Then I'll get to see how he does in battle as well if you're challenging him." Chuck said.
"So shouldn't we be on our way to the Dewford gym?" Max reminded them.
"Oh yeah!" May remembered.
"Then we better get going." Chuck suggested.

They soon arrived at the Dewford gym.
"Finally, the Dewford Gym." Ashlyn said.
"This is where you'll get your third gym badge." Max beamed.
At that moment, Ashlyn sensed a bunch of auras inside rushing towards the door. Ashlyn moves to the side along with Alain and Chuck who grabbed May and Max. The Gym doors flew open, causing Brock to yelp before girls with surfboards flooded out and trampled over him.
The others winced at Brock's pain.
"Well that's gotta hurt." Max commented.
May nodded, "Yeah."
"Raichu." Tesla agreed.
They all helped get Brock back onto his feet.
"Hey, dude. Probably not the best place for you to be taking a nap, you know?" A young man asked near the door.
The young man was powerfully built and had blue spiky hair and blue eyes. He wore a simple orange shirt, with black-white outlines. Brawly also wears short blue baggy pants, as well as black and orange shoes. Ashlyn knew that this young man is Brawly the Dewford Gym leader.
Brock noticed some of the girls behind Brawly, causing him to be lovestruck.
"So many beautiful surfer girls! Hello, ladies. My name is Brock. What say we catch a wave on the surfboard of love?" Brock asked in a loving tone, startling one of them.
Max twitched in annoyance and grabbed Brock's ear.
"The only wave you'll catch is one that will wipe you out." Max retorted.
"OOWW! No! Not the ear!" Brock shouted.
Brawly and the others sweat-dropped as Max dragged the Kanto Breeder away.
"Can I help you dudes and dudettes with something?" Brawly asked, changing the subject.
"Yes, we're looking for the Dewford Gym leader." Ashlyn replied.
"No way! I'm him!" Brawly declared, pointing at himself.
"You?" May spoke in disbelief.
"Right! Brawly, the Gym Leader of the Dewford Gym. Are you here to challenge me, little lady?" Brawly asked.
"Yes I am." Ashlyn replied.
"I'm also here to observe your match as well." Chuck added.
"Chuck! It's been awhile, hasn't it?" Brawly asked.
Chuck nodded, "Indeed it has."
Brawly nodded, "Sorry, Chuck and dudette. No can do. You see, right up until yesterday, the onshore scene was totally gnarly with some really wicked wave-age, but today, there's a radical face showing just offshore, so come on back tomorrow." He explained.
"Hold on." Chuck ordered.
Brawly turned to Chuck.
"Ashlyn and I have traveled a long way to get here. It would be rather rude that you turned down a challenger and to keep a guest waiting to go surfing." Chuck explained, "Not to mention I want to see how much my former student has progressed."
Brawly rubbed the back of his head sheepishly, "When you put it that way, Chuck, I guess it does seem rude." He admitted.
"So then, will you accept Ashlyn's challenge?" Chuck asked.
"Yes I will." Brawly replied.

And so, Ashlyn was going to challenge Brawly. Even though the ladies wanted to see Brawly go surfing, but they decided to become his cheerleaders for the match.
"The match between Dewford Gym Leader, Brawly, and the challenger, Ashlyn Ketchum, from Pallet Town, will now begin. Each trainer will use three Pokémon and the match ends when all three Pokémon of either opponent are unable to continue battling. The Challenger will attack first, the Challenger will be permitted to make substitutions during the match, the Gym Leader will not."
For a moment, Ashlyn panicked. She didn't think that Brawly would have a third Pokémon. Luckily, she trained another Pokémon just in case.
"Ready, Ashlyn?" Brawly asked.
Ashlyn nodded, "Yeah!"
"Let the battle begin!" The referee shouted.
"Machop, I choose you!" Brawly let out his first Pokémon.
"Machop!" Machop appeared on the field.

"Whoa, Machop!" May breathed out as she scanned Machop with her Pokédex.
[Machop, the Superpower Pokémon. Machop have muscles that never tire, no matter how much they exercise. Machop have enough strength to throw 100 average-sized adults.]
"100? That sounds strong..." May frowned.

"Keesha, let's go!" Ashlyn released her shiny Wild Duck Pokémon.
"Farfetch!" Keesha the shiny Farfetch'd appeared on the field.

"Wow! A Farfetch'd!" Max gasped, but then he noticed something odd about Keesha, "Wait a minute, there's something different about this Farfetch'd."
"Keesha's a shiny Farfetch'd." Brock stated.
"Farfetch'd?" May took out her Pokédex.
[Farfetch'd, the Wild Duck Pokémon. This extremely rare Pokémon can always be found holding a leek, or green onion, which it uses to build its nest.
Note: This different coloration indicates that this Pokémon is a shiny Pokémon.]
"Another shiny Pokémon?" May asked.
"Ashlyn caught Keesha when she was participating in the Indigo League." Brock informed.
"Interesting, she wants to use a Flying-type." Chuck commented.
"I think I wouldn't underestimate Keesha." Alain warned.

"Machop, use Bulk Up!" Machop's body was outlined bright red as he flecks his muscles.
"Keesha, Swords Dance!" Keesha flies into the air and spins rapidly.
"Now use Gust!" Keesha summoned a tornado of wind towards Machop was slightly struggling against the wind.
"Machop, jump into the Gust and then use Focus Punch!" Machop jumped into the tornado as his fist glows white. He was going around and around the wind. Then he was just getting closer...
"Keesha, Air Cutter!" Keesha waves her wings in an 'X' like motion and a light blue 'X' shaped energy is released from the tips of her wings at Machop who cried out in pain of the attack and was thrown to the ground. The wind soon died down.
"Machop!" Brawly called out.
Machop grunted as he started to stand up.
"Machop, you okay, dude?" Brawly yelled.
Machop nodded, "Machop!"
Brawly smiled in relief, "Okay then, use Cross Chop!" He ordered.
Machop's arms glow white, then it forms a cross with them. He ran towards Keesha.
"Double Team!" Keesha created copies of herself which caused Machop hit one of the copies.
"Now Aerial Ace!" Keesha jumps up in the air and charged forward with a high burst of speed with a clear aura around her and slammed into Machop who was sent tumbling across the field, leaving a dust trail.
"Machop!" Brawly cried out.
When the dust cleared, it showed Machop laying on the ground. Then he grunted started to stand up. He panted as he struggled to stand up. Everyone could see the scratches on Machop.
"Keesha, Brave Bird!" Keesha's body becomes surrounded by an orange aura, and she slammed into Machop who cried out in pain from the attack and was sent tumbling back, causing a dust cloud.
"Machop!" Brawly called out.
The dust cleared which showed Machop laying on the ground with swirls in his eyes which meant that he fainted. "Machop~"
"Machop is unable to battle! The victory goes to Farfetch'd!" The referee announced.
"Great job, Keesha." Ashlyn smiled.
"Farfetch'd!" Keesha smiled back as she raised her leek in the air.

"Impressive." Chuck complimented with his arms crossed in front of his chest.
"Wow, I didn't know that Farfetch'd was such a powerful Pokémon." May commented.
"Like I said, never underestimate Keesha." Alain pointed out.

Brawly returned Machop, "You did your best, Machop. Get some rest." He looked at Ashlyn, "I have to admit that you're a good trainer, Ashlyn."
Ashlyn returned Keesha, "Thanks, Brawly."
"But the match isn't over yet. Let's roll, Makuhita!" Brawly released his second Pokémon.
"Maku!" Makuhita appeared on the field.
"Makuhita." Ashlyn took out her Rotom phone and scanned the Pokémon.
[Makuhita, the Guts Pokémon. Makuhita never gives up, always getting back on its feet, no matter how many times it's knocked over. Each time rising to its feet builds up energy in its body.]
"'Never gives up', huh? Miku, let's go!" Ashlyn lets out her Psychic type.
"Ralts!" Miku the Female Ralts appeared on the field.
"Makuhita, use Arm Thrust!" Makuhita rushed towards Miku, ready to punch Miku.
"Miku dodge!" Miku started dodging Makuhita's punches.
Ashlyn knew that Miku wouldn't be able to dodge all of Makuhita's punches.
"Miku, Double Team!" Miku quickly created copies of herself which Makuhita had hit and the two jumped back away from each other.
"Not bad, Ashlyn." Brawly complimented.
"Thanks, Brawly." Ashlyn thanked him.
"But you got to do better than that." Brawly stated.
"No problem. Miku, Attract!" Miku winked and multiple hearts fly out. The hearts hit Makuhita who's eyes turned heart shaped.
"Makuhita!" Brawly gawked in surprise. He didn't think that Ashlyn would use that kind of move.
"Misty Terrain!" Miku releases a thick light blue mist from her body, covering the surrounding area with it.
"Now Dazzling Gleam!" Miku's body becomes surrounded in a rainbow-colored shine. The shine then gets brighter and she shots the energy towards Makuhita. The energy slams into Makuhita who grunted at the pain of the attack which caused him to skid across the field.
"Finish with Zen Headbutt!" Miku's helmet glows blue and becomes surrounded in a light blue reflective shield. She then slams into Makuhita's stomach who cried out in pain and was sent flying and tumbled across the field.
"Makuhita!" Brawly cried out.
When the dust cleared, it showed Makuhita laying on his back with swirls in his eyes, "Makuhita~"
"Makuhita is unable to battle! The victory goes to Ralts!" The referee announced.
"Way to go, Miku." Ashlyn complimented the Psychic type.
Miku smiled as she blushed.
Suddenly she was glowing in a light blue light. Her form started changing. Ashlyn gasped as she realized that Miku was evolving.
When she stopped glowing, Miku's new appearance was a maiden-like humanoid Pokémon that appears to be wearing a tutu. Most of its body is colored white, and there are three ruffles on each hip. Beneath the ruffles, it has skinny green legs with long, pointed feet. Its arms are also thin with two digits each. It has green hair that covers most of its face and reaches its shoulders on either side, resembling two ponytails. Large, red eyes are visible on either side of the hair that covers its face. On each side of its head is a flat, crimson horn that resembles a hairpin.
"Kirlia!" Miku the Kirlia smiled.
Ashlyn took out her Rotom phone and scanned Miku:
[Kirlia, the Emotion Pokémon. Kirlia uses the horns on its head to amplify its Psychic powers, and when this occurs, reality becomes warped, and future events can be seen.]
"Congratulations Miku." Ashlyn congratulated the Emotion Pokémon.
"Kirlia. (Thank you, Ashlyn.)" Miku thanked her trainer.

"Two wins." Brock commented.
Alain nodded, "Yeah."
"I wonder what Brawly's third Pokémon is." May pondered.
"I guess we'll see it soon." Max commented.

Brawly returned Makuhita, "Well played, Ashlyn. Didn't think you use 'Attract' on my Makuhita." He stated.
Ashlyn returned Miku, "Let's just say that I'm full of surprises." She admitted.
"Well then. It's down to my last Pokémon. Come on, Breloom!" Brawly let out his last Pokémon.
"Loom!" Breloom appeared on the field.
"Breloom?" Ashlyn took out her Rotom phone and scanned the Pokémon:
[Breloom, the Mushroom Pokémon. Breloom is the evolved form of Shroomish. Its excellent footwork gets it within striking distance of its opponent, where it unleashes a barrage of punches.]
"Sounds like a challenge. Keiko, come on out!" Ashlyn released her Mystical Pokémon.
"Mew!" Keiko the Mew appeared on the field.

"MEW?!" Alain, Max, Chuck, and Brawly exclaimed in disbelief.
They were beyond shocked to see the Mystical Pokémon right in front of them.
"Mew?" May took out her Pokédex:
[Mew, the New Species Pokémon. So rare that it is still said to be a mirage by many experts. Only a few people have seen it worldwide.]
"Wow! Is Mew really that rare?" May asked.
"May, Mew is known to have the DNA of every. single. Pokémon that we know of." Max replied.
"Really?" May blinked.
"It's true that Mew is rarely seen. But for Mew to have a trainer has never been seen before." Chuck stated, still in shock.
"Really?!" Max exclaimed, looking at Chuck with wide eyes.
"Mew is so cute!" May squealed, "Ashlyn is so lucky."
"This should be interesting." Alain stated.

"Keiko, you ready?" Ashlyn asked.
"Mew." Keiko nodded.
"Okay Breloom, use Bullet Seed!" Breloom shoots many glowing yellow seeds from its mouth, heading straight towards Keiko.
"Keiko dodge!" Keiko flies out of the way of Breloom's attack.
"Now use Blizzard!" Keiko releases a beam of wind and light blue glowing snow or a gust of wind with snow from her mouth, freezing the ground along with Breloom.
"Iron Tail!" Keiko's tail glowed a metallic color and she slammed her tail into Breloom, breaking him out of the ice, and sent him across the field.
"Breloom!" Brawly called out.
Breloom grunted as he struggled to stand up. Then he stood up as he panted. Breloom glared at Keiko who stared back at him with determination.
"Breloom, are you alright?" Brawly asked.
Breloom nodded, "Loom!"
"Okay then, use Toxic!" Breloom fires a stream of purple liquid from his mouth.
"Protect!" Keiko projects a green colored barrier in front of her, the purple bounces off the barrier, "Now Imprison!"
Then Keiko creates a force field around Breloom's body, prevented him from moving.
"Oh no!" Brawly gasped.
"Finish it with Psychic Cut!" Keiko releases a pink crescent-like blade of energy from her tail, and it hits Breloom who cried out in pain and falls to the ground, creating a dust cloud.
"Breloom!" Brawly cried out.
When the dust cleared, it showed Breloom with swirls in his eyes which meant that he fainted, "Breloom~"
"Breloom is unable to battle. The victory goes to Mew!" The referee announced, "and the winner of this gym battle is Ashlyn Ketchum!"
Keiko flies over to Ashlyn and into her arms.
Ashlyn gently hugs the Mystic Pokémon, "You did great, Keiko."
Keiko smiled, "Mew mew (Thank you, Ashlyn.)" She thanked her.
Chuck and the others come over to Ashlyn and Keiko. Tesla jumped into Ashlyn's arms and nuzzled against the two of them.
"That was awesome, Ashlyn!" Max beamed.
"Keiko did great against Breloom." Brock added.
"I have to agree." Alain agreed.
"Keiko is quite strong." May commented.
"Quite a thrilling battle." Chuck added.
"I have to admit Ashlyn, you're one heck of a trainer. I never expected that you would have Mew on your team." Brawly admitted as he came over to Ashlyn and the others.
"Thanks. Keiko was very happy to have a battle." Ashlyn smiled.
"Mew." Keiko said.
"With that in mind, I'm proud to give you the Knuckle Badge." Brawly held out a badge in his hand.
The Knuckle Badge looked like a boxing glove and was blue with an orange spot.
"Thanks, Brawly." Ashlyn slightly bowed and gently took the badge from Brawly's hand.
"Alright! We got the Knuckle Badge!" Ashlyn posed with Tesla.
"Raichu! (Badge number three!)" Tesla cheered.
"Mew!" Keiko smiled.

With her third gym badge on hand, Ashlyn and her friends are on their way to Slateport for Ashlyn's second Pokémon Contest.
