Chapter 6: Spellbound

Yoona

XXXXX

Gnolls don't often run on all four. Though they look like hyenas, they've evolved to walk on two legs, use tools, and speak. If a gnoll is running on all fours it's usually out of desperation; a panicked flight response that uses their pure animal instinct.

"You can't run forever Yoona!" One of the pursuers howled through the shadowy forest.

"No, no. Yoona doesn't want to go home." She replied only so herself could here. "That is no home for Yoona anymore."

Normally Yoona could outrun anyone in her tribe even if she was just on two feet, but who knew stealing the tribe's sacred relic would prompt the whole tribe to track her down?

Better yet, it was a tribe of expert trackers and hunters. "Yoona you really messed up this time." She thought to herself. She'd punch herself in the leg of it wasn't for the fact she's still running for her life. "I can smell her! This way!" One of the pursuers howled. Yoona could hear them getting closer. She willed every fiber of her being to keep running. Instead of speeding up she was only slowing down. Her lungs felt like ice, arms and legs burned with every step, tears flowing from her eyes; a mix of the pain felt now and the pain she'd feel if they caught her.

One of the pursuers released an arrow that would have been a definite hit, but just a moment before four arcane glyphs appeared on Yoona's arms as one shatters causing the arrow to slam into a nearby tree. 3 left.

"Found her! She's here!" Another arrow fired. 2 glyphs left. "She's almost to the border, we can't let her cross!" Another arrow, another glyph gone. "Just give us the relic Yoona, and we won't kill you!"

Yoona's last glyph vanished as another arrow barely strikes her before she ducks behind a tree. She can't run anymore. A few have already past her and they'd likely have set a trap ahead. She buried her face into her knees. "Yoona need help master... please save Yoona." She cries, grabbing her satchel bag.

Yoona finds herself quickly surrounded. Friends and family now brandishing weapons at her. One crouched down and spoke softly. "Just give us the relic, and we'll let you leave unharmed."

"NO! Yoona won't let you have master!" She shouted, holding the bag even closer to her chest. The gnoll stood back up with a disappointed look. "Fine... kill her."

"NO!" Yoona shouted again desperately. This time her satchel bag flew open as an old tome levitates out. It's pages flip open as it stops to one with a yellow glyph. It breaks into a blinding light. Yoona covered her eyes as the only thing she could hear were screams.

Mordeki

"Mordeki! Hold the door! We don't need anyone else interrupting OUR 'family' matters." The pale skinned Demonkin woman spoke through clenched teeth as she clashed swords with a human man. Even with their obvious differences they were the spitting image of each other.

"Yes, my queen." Mordeki spoke. His voice soft even for being a Lizardfolk. His blue and green neck frills retracted as he slammed his spellbook shut, the flame in his right hand vanishing. He strides with a purpose towards the outside of the decadent throne room he was in, and into a grand hall where the echoing sounds of fire, swordplay, and screams can be heard.

Two separate coat-of-arms clashed. The yellow rose of the Talvadi Queendom, and the red striped black bear of the revolutionaries. The number of standing Talvadi continued to fall as they were getting pushed back towards the thrown room. "The Court Mage is here!" One of the guards shouted. "Mordeki? We're saved!", "Everyone hold the line! If he can get a big spell off we can gain some ground!"

Mordeki flipped up his spellbook to a bookmarked page, he began to chant while drawing an arcane symbol in the air with his fingers. As he stated the last word he palmed the center of the symbol as his hand began billowing a torrent of fire in front of him. He slowly charged forward as the flames wrapped past the guards, giving them a warm breeze at worst, absolutely scorching the revolutionaries.

The defensive line gains some ground as the guards advance forward with Mordeki supporting from the rear. A constant tug of war that last for a good minute before one of the revolutionary's spells goes awry. "Amateur." Mordeki thought as he watched a fireball slam into the ceiling of the grand hall. As the ceiling cracked Mordeki realized in an instant that the fireball was planned. "SCATTER!"

The battlefield went from organized chaos to complete bedlam, everyone pushing and shoving to duck for cover in hopes to not get crushed my masonry. Mordeki made it out of kill zone, but still took a lose flying brick to the head. His vision went black. He awoke to the sounds of screaming and a bright light. He flashed his hand forward. "Dispel!" The light vanished to reveal a massive kitchen, scarred maid staff, and a crying Gnoll.

Mordeki stood nursing a bump on his head as he couldn't lift his left neck frill too well. He turned to one of the wait staff. 'Why did no one tell me of a uniform change?' Was his first thought. "Thank you for pulling me to safety. It sounds like it's finally over. I'm sure General Syna survived. Fetch him for me for a report. I need to find our queen." The waiter stood their shocked. He looked to his fellow servants as if to say "Someone do something!"

Mordeki began stepping away but was stopped by a furry hand grabbing him. He flashed his neck frills turning towards his assailant, but was instantly taken aback by her size and lack of distance. Standing a foot above him, two eyes with black sclera and amber iris starred into his own baby blues. The heavy breathing from her muzzle moistened his snout. "You saved Yoona!" She said joyously. "What?" Mordeki attempted to push her away, but immediately panicked on feeling round softness under her chest wrappings. If a lizard could blush, he would be. He pulled himself from her grasp tripping on his own tail causing him to slam his chin into the edge of a metal table. K.O.

The door to the kitchen opened as a duo of guards checked in. "We heard screaming, is everythi--" They looked at the Gnoll, then the Lizardfolk, then to the panicked staffed.

The guards simply sighed. "Great, there's more of them."
