Chapter 14: Dinner

Rain felt Tye's eyes on her while she was working. It was kind of creeping her out but she just shook it off. Knowing him he probably just wanted a reaction out of her. But unlucky for him, Rain was in no mood to give it to him.

Rain's shift was almost over and like usual, she was ready to go home. She hung up her apron and waved goodbye to Kevin, the guy who closed the place when everyone was leaving. Tye had left 30 minutes ago which made Rain happy.

She didn't have to worry about him now. He had probably gotten tired of Rain not paying attention to him and gave up.

Darnell had texted Rain to inform her that he'd be late. But Rain already knew that he was going to be late on purpose. This was just another way for him to get on Rain's nerves.

Rain glared at her phone screen when Darnell sent her a smiley face emoji and the words "Sorry not sorry" before turning off her screen.

Why'd he have to disgrace Demi like that?" Rain thought in agony before taking a seat on the concrete.

He was just so silly sometimes and Rain unfortunately was the one who would always have to deal with it. Meaning that when he felt the need to dump a bucket of water on Rain when she slept in too long and hung all of the baby pictures around the outside of his house, Rain was the calm one who cleaned herself and took them down. But she didn't mind.

She did get him back of course. Super gluing all of his school supplies to his desk, dying his hair pink, changing all of his ringtones to My Little Ponies theme song, it was no wonder they got along so well. Even when they did go too far, at the end of it they would just sit down and talk about it. Then that led to laughing, joking, and apologies. It was no wonder she didn't mind.

Rain was staring at a small crack in the concrete when she felt a presence behind her. She saw the silhouette of the unknown person and immediately let out a breath of relief. She knew who it was.

"What do you want Tye?" She asked, turning around.

"What makes you think I want anything?" He voiced back.

Rain turned around and frowned at him. Tye had his arms crossed and was looking at Rain with a neutral expression on his face. He was such a prick sometimes. Why couldn't he just be nicer?

Well considering the fact that you basically followed me here means that you want something." Rain answered smartly.

"Stop being a smarta-" Rain reached up and covered his mouth with wide eyes. "Watch your mouth!" She chided.

Tye just rolled his eyes and flicked her nose before moving her hand away from his mouth. "Don't tell me what to do." Tye said firmly.

"Don't curse at me then." Rain retorted, making Tye cast her a quick glare.

"But I didn't," Tye sighed and just rolled his eyes again. "I want to ask you something."

"What is it?"

"Why'd you say it like that?"

"Like what?"

"You know what I mean."

"Do I?" Rain replied starkly. Tye sent her a quick mug. "Why does she make everything so difficult?"

"Next weekend, I wanted to go to the movies...with you. Do you want to come or not?" Tye asked, fed up with Rain's teasing.

"Hm, I don't know. A kid like me going on a date with a guy like you?" Rain smirked. "I just don't know what if you end up getting bored?"

"Kid." Tye warned, making Rain sigh. He never played along with her.

"He's really asking me out? I don't know though. Maybe I should wait. I think I need time to think about this." Rain thought to herself.

"Can I think about it Tye?" Rain asked, making Tye groan. He wanted an answer today but he could wait. He knew she'd say yes in the end so he didn't mind waiting.

He nodded and Rain gave him a smile. She opened her mouth to speak but was cut off by the beep of the horn. Rain turned around to see Darnell awkwardly waving a hand outside the window calling her over.

"I'll see you at school tomorrow okay." Rain said, giving Tye a pat on the shoulder before walking away.

Tye watched Darnell beep the horn frantically causing Rain to shout at him. He frowned not liking the image for some reason. But decided not to let it get to him just yet.

"Love! What took you long, I was waiting on you for hours!" Darnell exaggerated. Rain popped him upside his head as she buckled herself up ignoring his exclamation of pain.

"Stop beeping at me, idiot." Rain scolded once she had herself situated. Darnell pouted, rubbing the back of his head with one hand as he steered the wheel with the other.

"Abusive." He mumbled under his breath. Rain threw him a sharp glance and he cowered away.

"What were you talking about back there with that guy?" Darnell asked casually.

Rain, who was checking her phone for messages, looked up, caught off guard from that question and looked at him weirdly.

"Why do you want to know?"

"Just asking."

"Oh then nothing." Rain said, shrugging her shoulders. Darnell gave her a quick glance and curled up an eyebrow. He clearly didn't believe her.

"Didn't look like anything to me." He muttered out under his breath. Rain heard him but chose to ignore him. Darnell was acting weird today.

She knew she had already said this, but Rain had never seen him like this before. Sure he was kind of bizarre but not this much.

It was completely against Darnell's nature to be hostile towards anyone, especially someone he had just met, which is why Rain was so shocked with how he was acting towards Tye.

"You are ready for tonight Love. My mom's making chocolate muffins." Darnell said, pausing at a stop light.

Rain looked up at him and saw that Darnell was back to his normal. He was acting as though nothing had ever happened making Rain even more confused.

But she wouldn't press him about it. She knew he'd never tell her what his problem was. It was just too hot for Rain to drop it.

"Is your dad going to be there?" Rain asked and Darnell nodded. It was rare for Darnell's father to be at dinner since the hospital always ended up having a situation going on. With the increase of crime occuring in the city, it was just hard to catch a break right now. But Rain was glad that Darnell's father finally got a day off. She knew how much Darnell enjoyed his company.

He took what he could get and never complained for the most part. But sometimes when Rain went over she would see nothing but sadness when he would find out his dad had to work late those days. That made it kind of heartbreaking for Rain. But she knew Darnell would be fine. Besides, he was used to it. This has been occurring since he was a kid. But since his father saved lives all the time Darnell just bared with it.

"I guess this means I'm getting my favorite dessert tonight."

Darnell's eyes narrowed at this. "You mean my dessert, the one you insist on taking from me?"

Rain crossed her arms, failing to defend herself. "Well you don't eat it all anyway. I'm just helping out over here." She insisted.

"Yeah, helping yourself to diabetes." Darnell muttered sarcastically under his breath. Luckily enough Rain didn't hear him.

Darnell pulled up in the driveway and parked next to his father's silver Chevy truck. Rain hopped out excitedly without waiting on Darnell, making him frown.

"Well screw the driver I guess." He thought of grabbing his bag and exiting the car. Rain waited impatiently for him to catch up by the front door tapping her foot against the ground in anticipation.

"Come on slowpoke, I'm hungry now." She complained. Darnell slowed his pace even more at her words and stifled a laugh at her annoyed groan.

"Gosh, I'm coming." Darnell joked walking up the steps to the front door. Rain gave him a playful jab and jerked his keys out of his hand unlocking the door.

"So rude." Rain rolled her eyes and walked inside immediately becoming engulfed by the scent of fresh cooked food. Darnell pushed rain to the side and stretched out his arms with a good grin on his face.

"Momma I'm home!" He yelled.

"Shut up Wilson, no one cares." Rain said as Mrs. Wilson walked into the room. Darnell stuck his tongue out at Rain and went to hug his Mom.

"Move boy, I don't want to hug you," She said maneuvering around Darnell. "My dream daughter!" She exclaimed, pulling Rain into a warm hug.

"Feeling the love." Darnell muttered out sarcastically. His mother ignored him and just shooed him away.

Feeling left out and abandoned, Darnell mugged Rain before exiting the room. Mrs. Wilson glanced over Rain's shoulder and let out a sigh of relief when she saw that Darnell was gone.

"Finally, I thought I was never going to get you alone." She said letting Rain go.

Rain gave her a confused look. "What do you mean?" She asked. Mrs. Wilson bit her lip nervously and looked around. "Um I have a favor to ask you?" She whispered.

"What about?" Rain asked.

"Well you see Darnell did tell you that we were going camping right?" Rain nodded. "Well, could you maybe—if it's not too much of a hassall, please help him get ready for it. I mean last year we went. The poor boy came home with poison ivy!" She pleaded.

Rain tried to stifle her giggles but failed. "Don't worry that's exactly why I'm here anyway."

Mrs. Wilson smiled. "You see this is exactly why you're my dream daughter. Now come and let's go eat."

Rain trailed behind Mrs. Wilson into the dinning room. She saw Darnell sitting down on his phone while his Dad was silently dozing off. Rain went up and sat in the empty chair next to Darnell. He looked up at Rain and smiled before sitting down on his phone.

"What did you talk about with my mom?" He asked Rain curiously.

Rain shrugged and brushed a piece of hair away from her face. "Nothing important. Why?"

Darnell just shook his head telling her to forget it while his mom entered the room with plates of food in her hand. Rain would help but last time she tried she almost dropped everything due to her clumsiness. Ever since then Rain was banned from carrying things.

Rain watched amused as Mrs. Wilson hit her husband upside the head and sat the food down on the table. Mr. Wilson popped up looking startled and winced as he saw his wife glare at him. Darnell was laughing but stopped when he received an evil eye from his Dad and looked down awkwardly at his lap.

This is why Rain enjoyed Darnell's family. They weren't complicated. They were simple. That was just how Rain liked it
