Chapter 12: BNS Chapter 12 — Special

* * * * * * * * * *

Starlight looked at Alan and Maud expectantly.

The conversation would be about magic, and she wondered what they were going to tell her.

Alan slowly removed the cuffs and opened the bracelets on his hooves. Maud, too, took out her bracelets hidden in her bag and slipped them onto her hooves.

Starlight looked blankly at this action, and peering into the bracelets, she noticed that they somehow resembled magical artifacts, but recalling all the books she read, she could not remember anything similar.

Unable to bear it, she finally asked.

— These bracelets... Are they magical artifacts?

Alan looked up at her and answered a little surprised.

— Well, something like that. Is there such a strong resemblance?

Raising her hoof to her chin, Starlight looked thoughtfully at the bracelets, and said.

— Well, they don't look like ordinary artifacts, but by their specific shape, cuts, and material, anyone who has studied magic for a long time will be able to say that this is definitely an unusual piece of jewelry, and that it has something to do with magic.

Alan nodded in understanding, but thought dejectedly to himself.

«I am such a fool, it is obvious that knowledgeable magicians will immediately understand that this is not just jewelry. It's good that I thought of hiding them with cuffs, otherwise it is not known who else could have discerned something related to magic in them.»

At this point, Starlight burst out with interest and started asking questions.

— Sooo... What are these artifacts? What are they doing? Where did you find them? Are they not dangerous? How do you use them? How about…

At this moment, Alan interrupted her, bringing a hoof to her lips.

Now she reminded him of Twilight on the show, which was a pretty funny sight.

When Starlight calmed down, he said.

— Instead of long explanations and stories, let me just show you?

Having received a nod from Starlight, Alan directed the bracelet to the side, and his kite, which was lying and resting after a terrible crash into a tree, suddenly soared, and headed towards Starlight, smoothly turning circles around the mare.

Seeing this, Starlight could only open her mouth in surprise, looking at the bracelet, then at the kite flying over her. Finally, she turned her gaze full of questions and confusion at Alan.

— Is that all... Bracelet?

Flashing a smile, Alan said solemnly.

— Starlight, let me introduce you to mine, created thanks to the invaluable contribution of Maud, development - Magic Incipience Bracelet, or in short - "MIB".

«This title was inspired by the movie Men in Black. After all, I am in some way also an alien who brought new technology to this world. And I also wear black. he-he-he.»

Starlight was still staring at the kite hovering around in disbelief as she slowly pondered Alan's words. Finally, fully realizing what was said, she turned her gaze to Alan and Maud and asked nervously.

— Are you saying that these "MIB" bracelet's allow ponies without a horn to use magic, and that both of you, two earth ponies are the creators? Alan, you're... not lying, are you?

Alan exchanged glances with Maud, and with a strange look at Starlight answered.

— Why would I lie? When creating our bracelets with Maud, I even left a small sign that resembles my cutie mark. Here, you can take a look for yourself.

As he said this, he pulled a hoof toward her, and showed a small mark on his bracelet that looked like a human hand holding a spark that appears to represent magic.

The mark was a little awkward, but clear and understandable enough. Seeing the similarities between the mark on the bracelet and the cutie mark on Alan's rump, Starlight was able to confirm his words.

Now she was in complete confusion, since she would never have thought that such an achievement would be for earth ponies, which under normal circumstances have nothing to do with magic. She plunged into her thoughts, forgetting about Alan and Maud.

— Starlight?

Alan called the pensive mare, from which she jumped on the spot in surprise.

— Huh? What?

Smiling at her reaction, Alan asked.

— I would like to ask why you thought I was lying?

— Oh, this? Well, you see, in the past, judging by the records in the history books, the most gifted unicorns of the past have already tried to come up with a way to use magic for ponies without a horn. But as far as I know, even when they found a solution, no one was able to use it.

Alan didn't expect that something like this happened in the past, and that he would do what many respected mages of Equestria failed to do. He felt a little pride in himself while Starlight was still trying to make sense of what was happening.

The only pony that did not express any emotion was Maud, and it was not clear what she was thinking. Reflecting on Starlight's words, Alan asked.

— Question. What kind of solution did they find, and why did they fail?

Starlight brought her hoof to the back of her head and scratched it thoughtfully.

— I'm not sure, I've never been particularly good at the historical part of everything about magic. I love its practical area more, when direct and active action is needed. But I'm sure Twilight should definitely know the answer to this "and almost any" question. I'll introduce you at the party tonight, I'm sure she'll be interested in your, um ... discoveries.

— Then, thanks in advance for your help. The main thing is not to say anything to her directly at the party, I am not yet ready to disclose information about this product.

— Sure, no problem!

After settling the matter, and receiving a satisfied smile from Alan, Starlight asked cautiously, glancing at the bracelet.

— Now... When we're done with this, if you don't mind, I would like to try this bracelet myself. Not every day you see such things.

Starlight's eyes seemed to glow with anticipation as she looked at Alan's bracelet. Of course, he agreed, and removing the bracelet from his hoof handed it to Starlight.

The mare first took the "Magic Incipience Bracelet" with magic, but was immediately surprised, since it was very difficult to hold it with this very magic. Lowering it into her hooves, she looked inquiringly at Alan, who took the hint and immediately answered.

— This is due to the crystal that redirects magic through itself. Due to its absorbent properties, it is very difficult to keep it airborne. That is why we also carry our bracelets exclusively with hooves.

Nodding at Al's explanations, Starlight quickly put the bracelet on her hoof, and could not resist, like any other mare, slightly admired how it looked on her.

Catching smiling glances from Alan and Maud, she was a little embarrassed, and with a quiet snort, she turned her gaze to Al's kite. She pointed with a hoof with a bracelet in this direction, and closed her eyes. Starlight tried to concentrate on lifting the kite with the bracelet, but no matter how much she tried, everything either ended up with her horn glowing, which lifted the bracelet with its magic, or nothing happened at all. The bracelet never showed signs of magic passing through it.

This could not but surprise Alan, looking at Starlight's frustrated expression, he pointed his second hoof, which was also wearing a bracelet, at the kite and used magic to lift it.

Bringing the kite closer, he said.

— You know, using the bracelet the first time I couldn't lift objects either, so why don't you start with the same thing I started with? Or, more precisely, a beam of light.

Lowering the kite, Alan lit a blue light on the tip of the mini-horn of the bracelet. Starlight looked at the light on Alan's second bracelet and asked.

— Is this second bracelet... the same as the one I have?"

— Yeap.

Alan nodded, slightly embarrassing Starlight.

— Then why do you need two identical bracelets, on different hooves?

Alan first lowered his head a little in prostration, and then hit his left hoof with his right hoof, as if hitting his palm with his fist, and answered.

— Oh, right! This is a good question, I almost forgot about it. In short, while practicing with bracelets, I noticed such an unpleasant thing as too slow development of magic control.

It was very difficult for me and Maud to carry out subtle manipulations with the objects that we held with the magic of the bracelet. As a result, I began to look for a solution to this problem, since no matter how much I levitated objects with a bracelet on my right hoof, my control almost didn't increase at all.

Maud silently nodded, and Starlight listened with interest to Alan's story, while already building her own guesses in her mind.

— I thought that maybe if I use a different hoof, it will be easier for the magic to pass through the bracelet. But what was my surprise when, having put on a bracelet on my left hoof, I couldn't extract magic from it at all. It's like I went back to the time when I first put on this bracelet. Only with great effort and concentration, I was able to light a small flame, which was far from what I could with my right hoof.

After a short pause, Alan continued.

— Then, to check if this is a general feature, or just mine, I asked Maud to do the same thing as me. As it turned out, she was unable to extract magic using the bracelet with another hoof too. I really wanted to dismiss the idea of a second hoof as a failure, but my love of being ambidextrous, which I have been all my life, didn't allow me to leave such an asymmetrical difference in the release of magic between the right and left hooves.

Looking at his hooves, Alan continued the story further.

— I continued to develop magic control with my left hoof, gradually bringing it to the level of the right one, and just then, I noticed something that I had not hoped to notice - my control increased! And not only on the right foot, but on both. Magic began to feel like it became more flexible and easier to use. I called this "Magic Flexibility".

Starlight's eyes widened at the news. Since the control of unicorns develops naturally, with practice. She would never have thought there could be such an unusual way to develop magical control. And this "Magic Flexibility", about which Alan speaks, she has not heard anything about something like that. But that was what made Alan's story so interesting, it was something new, and Starlight was sure Twilight would give a lot to find out about it.

At this time, Alan again lit the light on the bracelet of his left hand, and said.

— So now that I realized that the more often I use bracelets on different hooves, forcing my body to draw magic from different points, the higher my control, and the more magic I can dispose of at once. Well, within reasonable limits, of course, everything is limited by the amount of this very magic in the body.

Starlight sat with a downcast gaze, and by looking in different directions, it was possible to understand that she was thinking about something. Ten seconds later, she decided something for herself, and closed her eyes, said.

— I will try to use the bracelet again, this time as you said, I will try to start with a light.

Starlight began concentrating on the bracelet again, trying not to use her horn. Sitting in silence, Maud and Alan watched with curiosity as Starlight attempted to light a beam of light on the bracelet.

The very concentrated mare was already beginning to lose patience, since the maximum of which she had reached in her concentration was to feel this very bracelet, and then only because it absorbs magic a little into itself.

There was no way she could force the flow of her magic to come out exactly where the bracelet was. As a result, after another minute, she collapsed on the couch with a hollow and dejected sigh and screamed.

— FOR SAINT CELESTIA! WHY DOESN'T IT WORK FOR ME!?

Alan just smiled bitterly and exchanged glances with Maud.

Starlight got up and spoke with indignant irritation.

— Usually, I'm very good at magic, like seriously, VERY! But why this damn bracelet doesn't want to release my damn magic!

Looking at Starlight so annoyed, Alan could hardly contain his smile.

He knew that such a Starlight could not be seen often, as she usually hides her irritation from others, so as not to offend anyone. So when she finally released her emotions without worrying about those around her, it was fun for Al to watch.

After finishing her complaints, Starlight turned to Alan and Maud and asked.

— But still. How is it that I, being a unicorn, cannot use a bracelet, but you earth ponies can?

To Starlight's surprise, Maud responded, and did so in her trademark emotionless manner.

— I may not be an expert in magic, but I think the answer lies in the question.

Starlight and Alan looked at Maud in surprise and thought about her words.

Alan had his own ideas on this, and Starlight also began to understand something, but she was not completely sure of her guesses. Putting that question aside, she said.

— I think we should continue to discuss this topic already with Twilight, because no matter how much you look, but, she understands magic better than anyone else. After all, it is not for nothing that she represents the element of magic.

— Yes, I agree. I originally planned to contact her, but when I met you, I thought it would not be superfluous to ask your opinion. By the way, what do you think in the end? Will I be able to distribute such a device if Twilight and the other princesses give their permission?

Starlight smiled and answered.

— Sure! These "MIB" bracelets of yours are truly incredible development. I really can't wait to see Twilight's face when she sees them and learns of your discoveries.

Alan smiled strangely, scratching the back of his head with his hoof, while he thought to himself.

«Indeed, if she is the same as in the show, then her reaction will not be difficult to predict.»

Then Starlight seemed to remember something, and said.

— Ah, right, what to do with it, you definitely don't want to pick it up?

Starlight took a cupcake she bought with Alan today from her bag.

Alan looked at him and said.

— Why don't you try it, I assure you will like it. By the way, Maud, I also have one, would you like to share it with me?

Maud just smiled and nodded to him. Alan took out a cupcake and carefully cut it open with a knife, using magic. Starlight, on the other hand, just looked at her cupcake, trying to understand what is so unusual about it that Alan praises it so much.

When Alan and Maud were holding half a cupcake, they took a bite of their portions together, and immediately their faces blurred in pleasure, well, except for Maud, she looked almost the same as before.

Starlight couldn't believe that cupcakes could be so delicious, in fact, Alan couldn't believe it either. He was also surprised, as although the taste was similar, it was slightly different. He sensed something magical about this cupcake, and now he fully realized why the salesman sells one cupcake per pony and then immediately leaves. They would have run over him if he had stayed in town.

Maud was also pleased with the cupcake, but not as much as the others, apparently this is the influence of kinship with Pinkie Pie, who most likely gave Maud various goodies to try more than once.

When they finished their meal, they turned to a simple and casual conversation. After chatting a little about all sorts of nonsense with Alan and Maud, Starlight decided it was time for her to leave, so she glanced at her watch and said.

— It's already afternoon, and there isn't much time left before Pinkie's party starts. I need to prepare for it both mentally and physically, so I'll probably go back to the castle.

Rising from the couch, she looked at Alan and Maud, as if expecting something. Alan did not quite understand what was the matter, and noticing this, Starlight spoke.

— You will stay at Maud's for a while, or ... we can go home together, if you are on the way.

At that moment, she slightly moved her hoof on the floor, while slightly averting her gaze to the side, as if she were asking just like that, by chance. Maud quickly realized what was what, and slowly walking up to Starlight, brought her face to her ear, and said in a whisper.

— I see you enjoyed hanging out with Alan, didn't you? I told you that he is special. Although, you have not yet learned the full range of his "special" features, but, if you become bolder, you may be able to find out.

After that, Starlight's gaze was directed somewhere into the void, and her eyebrows slightly connected, as if she heard something incomprehensible. But then, as if realizing something, her cheeks turned pink on her unchanging face, and squeezing her lips, she, with some confusion and embarrassed reproach, sharply looked at Maud, on whose face there was a barely noticeable smile.

Alan, who was watching all this all this time, looked at Maud with a poker face, clearly seeing through her machinations. He understood that she was again trying to push his relationship with another mare. Sighing to himself, he said to the mares.

— Hey girls. You will have time to gossip later. Like Starlight said, I feel the need to prepare for Pinkie's party too. So we shouldn't waste time.

Maud looked at Alan with a sly, and, as usual, barely noticeable smile, and said.

— I think you should escort Starlight to Ponyville.

— No problem, if she doesn't mind of course.

At that moment, Starlight seemed to jump on the spot, but quickly taking herself in her hooves, smiled and answered.

— Um... Yes! Of course, I will be glad to have your company.

Having decided so, they quickly gathered all their belongings and got up from the sofa. Having embraced and saying goodbye to Maud, Starlight headed towards the exit of the cave, while Alan received an ambiguous smile from Maud, rolled his eyes, and headed for Starlight.

As they walked towards Ponyville, Starlight explained what Alan should expect from Pinkie Pie and her parties. Although Alan had an idea of the scale of things to come, based on the knowledge from the show, he was still surprised by some of Starlight's comments regarding Pinkie that were not shown on the show.

Finally, reaching Ponyville, Starlight turned to Alan and said.

— Well, it's just a stone's throw from here to the castle, and... I hope i'll see you again, well, after the party, I mean.

— Hah, well, of course, if you hadn't offered, I would have done it myself. It's definitely great to be with you, and you know what? I swear that half of Ponyville would give a lot to be in my place today.

— Pfft, no thanks, I already have enough strange individuals in my environment. And you're clearly going overboard about half of Ponyville. Now, let say, a third of Ponyville sounds more believable.

Picking up Starlight's words, Alan mockly replied.

— Aaa! Oh yes, yes, yes! How could I be so wrong in counting the fans of the incomparable Starlight Glimmer, a student of Princess Twilight, the Great Sorceress, whose portrait is obviously in Princess Celestia's personal icon. Forgive me your majesty.

Alan finished with a theatrical bow, ignoring the sidelong glances of the ponies around them. Barely holding back her laughter, Starlight glared at him, and also feigned reply.

— Oh, since you realized your mistake, then, as a noble and just ruler of this street, I will mitigate your punishment, and instead of imprisonment in Tartarus, I will lock you in the room of endless parties with Pinkie Pie for a week.

Pretending to be scared, Alan answered.

— NO! Anything but this! Better send me to Tartarus, please! After all, I... I will… Pff... Pff-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Finally, Alan and Starlight could not restrain themselves, and began to laugh all over the street.

When she finished laughing, Starlight wiped the tears at the corners of her large and beautiful eyes, and turned to Al, said.

— Yeah, Maud was really right when she said you were special.

— Did she really tell you that?

Then Starlight looked at a slightly surprised Alan, and realized that she had said it out loud. Laughing slightly embarrassed, she looked away and said.

— Um... well... you see… we...

Alan raised an eyebrow as he looked at Starlight.

— Argh!... Damn it, YES! She told me so. And YES! I agree with that, so just shut up and accept it, preferably silently!

She ended the phrase by returning Al's recent words to him, with a slightly crimson complexion. Alan was even a little taken aback by such a turn, but then laughed at the situation, although he caught Starlight's stern look, quickly cut off his stream of laughter.

Taking a deep breath, Starlight also laughed slightly, and returned her smile, said.

— So, I'd rather run to the castle before something even more embarrassing happens.

— Hehe, okay, so be it, I'm letting you go.

Rolling her eyes, Starlight turned towards the castle, but did not move from her place, thinking about something. After a few seconds, she turned to Alan, and going up to him, hugged him tightly, and then with a quick gait took off towards the castle. Alan only watched the fleeing Starlight with a smile. Laughing a little, he returned to Maud's cave, which greeted him with a question.

— How did everything go?

— Well, Starlight is definitely an interesting person. And I definitely like her, and as far as I can tell, she liked me too. Although there is one mare here who tried very hard to bring me closer to Starlight.

— I have no idea what you are talking about.

Maud turned away slightly, keeping a slight smile on her almost emotionless face.

Alan chuckled, and going up to Maud sat down next to her.

— So Starlight gave me a little briefing on Pinkie Pie's parties, I would like to hear her sister's opinion.

— My sister is an expert at parties, so there's nothing to worry about. But if anything happens, I'll cover you.

With that said, Maud put her hoof on top of his. Alan smiled, and embracing Maud, pulled her to him and kissed her. Of course, she happily returned the kiss. After comforting a little with each other, the couple began to prepare for the party. Shower, clothes, a bag with the necessary things, and of course the cupcake that Alan bought for Pinkie.

After a certain amount of time, Alan and Maud left the cave and headed towards the Sugarcube Corner.

To Alan's surprise, the streets of Ponyville had noticeably thinned, which indicated only one thing, much more ponies were coming to the party than he had originally thought, which bothered Alan a little.

Having reached the Sugarcube Corner, Alan and Maud stopped in front of the front door, which was decorated in every possible and impossible way, from balls to serpentine and sparkles. Alan looked at all this with a strange expression on his face, and said a little cautiously.

— Here it is, the legendary den of eternal fun. Will a demon appear to me, or will we be stopped by the great serpent? Anyway, I'm coming in!

Maud, who was standing next to him, smiled and said.

— Don't be dramatic.

With a supposedly frustrated grimace, Alan responded.

— BUT MAAAM! I wanted to look more pretentious.

— You are good as you are.

— Well, I have nothing to argue here.

Shaking his mane revealingly, Alan made himself a narcissist, causing Maud's rare eye-rolls, followed by a smile.

Laughing, Alan finally calmed down and decided to go inside the Sugarcube Corner.

— Knock knock, did you order guests of honor?
