Chapter 12: THE BURNING MAN

Adrianne's eyes were focused on her tablet's screen — watching a video on the internet. Her eyes were flashing disbelief at the information she was learning. As a result, Adrianne did not notice Eva's dark gaze on her.

Erick died yesterday— her only sibling. His whole body was almost burned from what happened. And because of that she almost couldn't recognize her own brother.

The police were already investigating about, who the person was and what was the man's motive. Whether it's just a simple robbery or if the person had other intentions too, which they couldn't point out.

In order to hide the truth, Eva paid a large sum of money to the police to give her brother's body a different personality— a new identity. Mike shouldn't know that his brother was the one who entered and attempted to end his daughter's life.

Eva was furious, but no emotion could be seen on her face. They were inside a van. Heading towards a vacation house in his husband's province. Because of all the things happening to their family, Mike decided to stay in a quiet and peaceful place for a while.

Mike was worried about the welfare of his wife and his daughter. His wife Eva was still pregnant, so they need to be more careful and conscious of their surroundings. To keep the woman and their unborn baby, out of trouble.

What Mike doesn't know was that the person Eva wants to stay away at most was with them in the car. No matter how quiet the place that they were going to, it would still not be reassuring for Eva, because of Abigail.

Did Abigail know that it was Erick? That was the question Lingering in Eva's mind. But if Abigail saw it, then she would have already told Mike about the person who entered her room.

But no matter how long and hard Eva was trying to be still, she couldn't calm herself down. It seems like, she now can't be quiet until the child disappears. With each day passing by, It was starting to get harder for her.

Abigail, on the other hand, was leaning against the window of the van. Secretly grinning as she remembered what happened last night.

~~

Mike's eyes widened in shock when he saw someone burning, and came out of his daughter's room. When Eva saw her brother burning, she immediately bit her lower lip. Her inside was filled with fear and concern for her brother's condition. What happened? She curiously asked.

"Abigail!" Mike called out as he entered the child's room.

"Daddy!" Abigail loudly shouted before approaching Mike's body.

"Are you okay, Sweetheart? Are you hurt?" Worry was written in Mike's eyes as he in panic asked Abigail. Going closer, he looked closely at the child's body. Searching if Abigail was hurt or are there any wounds in her body.

"Daddy, nothing bad happened to me and I wasn't hurt either." Young Abigail answered.

Mike took a deep breath. Her child was fine and safe. He thanked God for it.

Mike went back to their room and picked up a gun hidden in the safety box, located in his closet. He had this for an emergency, like tonight.

"Both of you, just stay here," he instructed his wife and daughter before coming down the stairs. He followed the burning man as that earlier ran downstairs. Going into the swimming pool of their house which can be seen on the first floor.

"Ma'am, what's going on?" Linda asked, confused. She just woke up and was surprised by the loud noise that was coming from the second floor.

Eva's face turned pale. Her eyes were reflecting anxiousness in them, as she silently hoped inside. Her husband shouldn't know that her brother was the one who had entered their house!

She glared at Abigail. Her mind was already full of questions. What really happened in the room? The plan was very simple and yet, his brother couldn't do it in the right way.

She held Abigail's body tightly on both sides. Her eyes glazed with anger.

"What happened? Tell me!" She asked. Unable to hide the anger she currently was feeling. Now that her brother was on fire as Mike followed him with a gun, she could not calm down. And It's all this kid's fault!

"Ah! I-It hurts, Auntie!" Said Abigail who was about to cry.

"Ma'am, the child is hurting!" Nanny Linda, in fear, said. It's her first time seeing the woman acting like this, Eva was a kind and loving mother in her eyes, so the scene she saw was really surprising.

"Shut up! I want to know what happened earlier!"

Adrianne's patience completely went down when she felt Eva's nails sinking into her skin. Without a choice, she grabbed the woman's arm and bit it hard.

"You bitch!" Eva cried out when she felt the pain, making her release her grip on Abigail.

"Ma'am!"

Adrianne hurriedly ran into her room. She immediately closed it as she enabled the lock. She grinned, wiping the sides of her mouth.

"Now you know what I'm capable of doing once you still played with me, Eva." She whispered in the air, as she stared at the door immensely.

She heard the woman laughing outside. Eva slammed the door countless times, forcing it to be opened. But to no avail, her efforts were put to waste. It's a good thing that Linda stopped the woman and tried to calm Eva down.

Adrianne just shook her head to the side. If this is how the woman would behave after knowing that her brother might die. Then how would she react if Eva herself was the one already imminent to death? She laughed at that thought. It looks like their game was about to end, already.
