Chapter 3: Chapter 3 - H2 - Disappointment
"Good job" Gus pated Homu's back. "Didn't expect you to be such a reliable lad".
"Thank you" Homu nodded slightly.
"Still so unassertive" the big man laughed hoarsely, "don't worry, you'll be like us in no time" he winked, giving Homu the creeps.
"Don't talk nonsense Gus. And stop calling her lad already" Melaena looked disapprovingly and turned away from him to Homu.
She was wearing her common smile "What do you say? Let us dine somewhere else, where we won't be bothered by his ignorance."
Almost 3 weeks ago Homu had unofficially joined this chain of underground organisations and so far, her assessment was, that they seemed rough and rather harsh, but never crossed a certain line of wickedness. Mainly due to Mea, containing them. They sometimes growled but always obeyed, which Homu in a way found fascinating.
Mea had explained that her role was to manage the various groups. She was mandatory to make sure the amount of crime wouldn't reach a boiling point. While Homu thought of her explanation as rather flimsy, she decided to cope with this group.
'for now, at least' Homu knew that she lacked certain skills she direly needed for her momentaneous life. Also, if all she had to do was deliver some letters, she did not feel particularly morally ambiguous.
A servant placed various condiments on the table.
"You are such a polite girl. If I were you, I would have already taken revenge on Gus" 'revenge?' She had thought about this subject before 'I don't really care about vengeance'.
Mea simply continued knowing that Homu was not likely to answer unless a direct question was posed.
"Now, what do you think? Mea looked at Homu expectantly "How do you like it here so far? Has Rewa been kind to you so far?"
Homu answered almost purely out of reflexive "Yes very kind, I am really thankful" Homu created a smile on her face.
Mea seemed content with Homu's reaction.
"There is something else I wanted to inquire" Mea often used words or phrases, which around here seemed to be commonly known d as fancy or stuck-up. 'Well at least she does so around me' Homu noted.
'Is her goal to better my opinion of her? Well, it does remember me of home' she admitted 'I just wonder how much I have exposed myself to her?' she was at least mildly worried.
"How about officially joining our little group. I want to make you a leading member immediately."
"I- "Homu was not quite able to cope with the situation.
'Is she serious, why would she want to make me a decision caring role?' Homu knew, that she had to form a response "What would that-, well imply" she tired not showing how stressed she felt.
"That would imply, that you become a more independent part of the group, have position you deserve as well as a footman?" Mea added as if Homu would care.
"Well- "Homu tried to calm down. 'She acted similarly when recruiting me. Is she this perky with everyone?'
"I would like to think about this further if that's okay" she rapidly added "Though I already want to thank you for the offer" Homu was not quite sure how to interpret the change in Mea's facial expression.
'How to I keep getting in situations such as these? I must be doing something fundamentally wrong'.
Homu most definitely did not intent to join this group as a core member.
'hopefully postponing this conversation for now has not been a foolish choice.'
Mea was back to her notorious smile "Sure, take your time. Don't worry, I didn't mean to ask too much of you" Homu felt mixed feelings regarding Mea's response.
'I must have disappointed her, but why would she ask me of all people?' Homu was unable to determine the root cause leading to this situation.
