Chapter 13: 13

Far away from the city polluted air; by the countryside, Emily lived with her husband, she didn't have any kids and thus wanted December to stay by her side as she thought of her as her daughter.

It was getting dark when December and Nala walked around the empty streets with unsure expressions.

"December— are you sure you know the way to your aunt's house," Nala looked around with a scared look on her face.

"It should be somewhere, here—the last time I came here there was a huge tree beside her gate," December spoke while looking around.

"When was the last time you came here?" Nala questioned.

"Hm—was it, 10 or 11?"

"Ten or Eleven what?" Nala stopped and asked.

"Years! Obviously," she replied.

"What? So you are trying to tell me that we are lost! In the middle of nowhere?"

"Technically it's the middle of the village and we are not lost—'' December spoke in an assuring voice and then Lifted her hand, "There it is,"

Nala looked in the direction December was pointing into. "Are you sure that is the house? Because I am least interested in bragging into someone else's home,". Nala muttered.

"Oh! Come on!" December pulled her over to the black gate and swung it open. They entered a small garden and walked towards the door. December rung the bell and waited, the door opened slowly and a lady with grey eyes and brown hair opened the door, she looked at the guest for a couple of seconds without responding but suddenly she realized.

"December!! My dear! You are here!" she moved forward and hugged her tightly and glanced at Nala.

"Who is this? A friend?" Emily asked.

"Yes, she came to visit you," December replied in a jolly voice.

"That's such a pleasant surprise, come in dear,"

Emily gave her way so she could enter, "Hi, I am Nala. December's friend." She held out her hand, Emily glanced at her hand and back at Nala. She pulled her into a hug too.

"Nice to finally meet December's friend." She patted her lightly.

Nala sucked in the air and stood like a rock, she wasn't used to loving but her hug melted away all her worries. Her heart was heavy even since but now she felt like all the burden was lifted from it. "Thank you," Nala muttered.

December's lip curled up when she saw them, she took a deep breath and closed the door behind them.

"Come on in. I have made some delicious food for you, we especially closed the restaurant today so we could prepare for your arrival." Emily chuckled and walked them in.

The house was warm and cozy, there was a sweet smell of apples in the room, A man with messy black hair that had few strands of silver in them sat on the couch with a newspaper in his hand.

"Who is it, love?" He asked.

"It's our Winter! And she brought a friend." Emily replied with a loud voice so it could reach him.

"They are here? Already? I thought she would be late," he closed the newspaper hurriedly and walked towards the kitchen where Emily had taken the girls.

"Hello Uncle Eddy, it's been so long," December gave him a light hug.

"My Winter is here! This is so exciting!" He chuckled and looked up at Nala who was shrinking in the corner, he stared at her with a meaningful gaze and spoke.

"This must be the Spring!" He spoke.

Nala was confused but December looked in her direction with surprise and then back at her uncle.

"Are you sure?" She asked.

"Well yes! I can tell that with just a glance," he spoke with surety.

"Is there something wrong?" Nala asked.

"No! It's just how he judges people." Emily answered, "he is a very judgemental person! Don't listen to him," Emily pulled her towards the chair.

"Come on! Sit here, eat something both of you are so thin, Don't they have food in the city?" Emily nagged as she filled the bowls with food.

They sat around the dinner table and. laughed while Uncle Eddy told them his made-up adventure trip stories where he was the hero and Emily was his Heroine. December looked at them with admiration as they were still so loving and caring towards each other. Nothing had changed in their lives. Nala too, very easily blended into the surroundings and treated them no less than her very own Uncle and Aunt. The warm house grew more and more comfortable until it was too late and Emily sent them upstairs to sleep. The room upstairs was a spacious one, it had a queen-size bed in the center with beautifully decorated walls. December placed her bag on the floor beside the door while Nala threw it right over the bed.

"Hah! It was so fun! I don't want to leave this place!" Nala threw herself over the bed and closed her eyes. December, on the other hand, wasn't feeling good, her heart kept on beating oddly and she was having a bad feeling, it was as if something bad was about to happen.

"December? Why are you standing there? Don't you want to sleep?" Nala lifted her head and asked.

"Yes, I am going," December replied, "I am going to the washroom first you go to sleep!" December spoke and stepped towards the washroom.

"What is this?" December looked into the mirror and spoke to herself, she lightly patted her chest trying to punch out the bad vibes she had.

She tuners in the water and splashed her face with cold water a few times, and then looked back at her reflection. "Everything is fine!" She nodded to herself and walked out. The lights had already been turned off by Nala so December used her phone's flashlight to reach the bed.

She laid down and placed the phone on the side table. And closed her eyes, and that was how she fell asleep.

Buzz...buzz...buzz

December frowned when she heard the vibrating sound of the phone, it was still the middle of the night, she picked up the phone and slid the screen, and took the phone to her ear.

"You need to get to the hospital at once! It's an emergency!" A woman spoke swiftly.

"Who?—" December pulled away from the phone from her ear and looked at the name.

"Dad!?" December's heart leaps out of her chest when she saw the caller ID.
