Chapter 2: Chapter 1

12 years later

Beep, beep, beep, click

"Ugh I shouldn't of stayed up till three in the morning reading that stupid book," I said to myself, groaning as I sat up in my bed.

As I got out of bed I got dressed into the white uniforms that the orphanage makes you wear. I looked out of my barred window and I saw a man looking at me. He was wearing a black suit and a black fedora. I stared at him confused as to why a man was staring at me through my window. I kept staring at him and then he turns away and leaves.

"That was weird," I said to myself. "I wonder who he was. And more importantly why was he looking at my window out of the many others that are here."

"Ding, dong."

"Breakfast time, everybody get up and wait by your door so we can let you out!" yelled out the bell ringer. We call him bell ringer since none of us know what his real name is.

I walked up to my door and waited for the guy to open it. I couldn't wait to go down to the cafeteria and tell my friend Jane what I saw. As the guy came to my door he looked at me for a short while before opening my door. I walked down the hall towards the stairs that lead to the cafeteria. When I got to the bottom of the stairs I looked at the menu for today, sausage and strawberry pancakes. I looked at the word sausage with worried eyes wondering how they will taste, since everything they make tastes like crap.

"Hey Kizzy over here, I saved you a spot in the line!" Jane yelled from across the cafeteria.

I walked over to her and lined up behind her. I looked at her and saw that she was happier than usual today. She was bouncing up and down like she took an energizer shot.

"So I looked out my window this morning and saw a man in a black suit staring at me, did you see anything outside your window this morning?" I asked her trying to make conversation hoping she would tell me why she was in such a good mood.

"No sorry I didn't, you just might be seeing things. You do know it is the full moon tonight and you know what that means, weird stuff will be happening ohhh," Jane said making a spooky voice and wiggling her fingers in my face.

I laughed at her. We got our questionable food and sat down at our table by the window with the view of the gardens. I looked up at Jane and she still had a huge smile on her face and was shaking her leg up and down.

"Okay, what's got you so happy Jane?" I asked her with a concerned look.

"Kizzy, I have been here for ten years waiting for someone to take me home. Yesterday the lady at the front desk came to my room and told me that someone came in and wanted to adopt a child. They looked at my file and my file only and immediately gave an answer. They wanted to adopt me," Jane said with a huge smile. "They are coming today to get me at lunch time."

"Wow Jane, I'm so happy for you," I told her trying to force a smile to hide my sadness.

"I'm sorry Kizzy, I know that we are best friends and we never leave each others side but I promise you I will call or visit you when I can," She said giving me a warm smile.

I looked down at my food and poked at it. "Okay."

We ate our food and talked about all the fun times we had together. Neither one of us touched the sausages. We were not risking it today. After we ate we went to the play area and played board games until Jane had to go.

When it turned noon Jane's new parents came and got her. We said our goodbyes and I watched her leave with her new parents. After she left I went down to the kitchens to do some chores. I had to clean the tables and put away the trays so they would be ready by dinner. After I was done cleaning it was getting to be dinner time. I went back up to my room and flopped onto my bed exhausted. I heard the sound of the bell and knew I had to wait to relax. I got up and waited for my dinner by my door. The bell guy handed me my food and I stared at it, meatloaf and rice. I didn't care if it was bad or not I was hungry after all that cleaning. After I finished my food I pushed the empty tray under my door and put on my pajamas.

I sat on my bed and decided to look outside my window and saw the full moon floating in the sky. I looked away from it when my head started to suddenly ache. I laid down on my bed with my hand on my forehead to calm down the headache. I closed my eyes and fell asleep within seconds.
