Chapter 5: Incident x Ambition
Today is my sixth birthday.
Since we don't really have the resources to celebrate birthdays, we just spend the entire day together. My horns are starting to make notice to everyone in the house, but they all accept my weirdness as is. Okana tried pulling it off but I think that GOD cursed me because it made me have the tingly feeling. She Ara~Ara'd after I told her what I felt and just kept watching me with this weird glint in her eye.
Anyway, today Machi is coming over to our trash heap to celebrate my birthday. She told me I could take the day off. We were all laughing at a joke when Machi had to use the bathroom.
"Hmm..." Okana had a weird expression on her face, like she was suspicious about something. We kept going along with the day, until we heard a knock at the door.
The knock was really loud, as if they had been waiting for a while. Everyone went silent and looked at the door. The knocks got more and more frantic until we heard a man's yell.
"Open the door!" He sounded like he was in need of help so Yumi sleepwalked to the door and opened it. A man hobbled in, looking around with bloodshot eyes. It seemed like he was high on some kind of drug because he was hallucinating. Everyone just stared in worry as the man was waltzing around. Eventually, he stopped in front of Ukana. Everyone was waiting in anticipation of what this man would do, and why he was here.
"Yo-u kid! Gimme back myyy money!" Adding to the belief he was on drugs, he was severely slurring his words.
"Who are you?" Ukana asked, genuinely confused. The man grabbed onto Ukana's head and we all stood up from where we were sitting.
"I'LL F*CKING KILL YOU KID!!!" The man threw a punch that Ukana easily blocked. Suddenly, Yumi's eyes widened and she groups Ikana, Okana and I together in her arms and shielded us.
What happened next would change my life forever.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM
An explosion rang out inside the heap of trash that I called home. All of us went flying and hit the ground, hard. My ears rang in pain and my eyes were bright with light. I felt pain in different areas but I focused on clearing my eyes. I felt a few broken bones and saw a head of pink hair in front of me. Machi.
"Yu... ear m... at hap... why di..." I could barely hear Machi over the ringing in my ear as she picked me up. I saw her looking around for the rest of my family before I blacked out.
I slowly opened my eyes and saw that damn GOD cackling his *ss off. He was watching a screen that was looking above my body in what I assume to be the real world. He finally noticed me and turned around.
"BAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THAT WAS SOME FUNNY *SS SH*T MAN! I WAS RIGHT TO PICK YOU FOR ENTERTAINMENT!!!" The bastard cackled loudly like an evil villain, and my cheeks burned in anger.
"You godda-"
"Nope. BYE." The god raised his finger towards me right before I snapped and flicked me away. Once I reopened my eyes after blinking, I was met with the face of Machi crying slightly. I immediately hugged her and her eyes widened in surprise.
"Yukana, you're fine..." Machi gently stroked my head, starting to make me feel calm and drowsy at the same time. I started to tear up and ignored the pain in my arms.
"W-Where are the others?" After a few minutes of crying and letting all of our emotions out, I asked Machi where everyone else was. She had a troubled expression on her face.
"U-Ukana.... didn't make it... Yumi needs to find treatment and Okana and Ikana had minor injuries." I finally took a look around and saw that we were in some kind of abandoned building. Everyone, minus Ukana and Machi, was on a bed. Okana looked like she was lost and distant, no longer that teasing expression on her face. Ikana's eyes were wide like she had seen something, but unlike Okana, she was laying down.
I felt another round of tears coming as Machi left, probably to go cry elsewhere. I was emotionally exhausted and just wanted to sleep, and so I did.
For a couple of days, we continued with our treatment but Yumi still hadn't woken up. Today, Okana, Ikana and Machi finally came up to me.
"Y-Yukana... Okana and I are leaving... Please don't try to find us. We entrust you to Machi. Take care of eachother." Okana was bawling out her eyes as Ikana tried standing up straight, but eventually collapsed to her feet.
"We are going to try to find treatment for Mom... I don't think you should come. Please, leave the city and live a better life than us...." I was speechless. I tried to get up from the bed but Machi held my hand, a shadow covering her eyes.
"Please! Please don't leave me here!" I called out to the two who were leaving. They had Yumi in a stretcher but I didn't want them to leave. I attempted to leap out of the chair but Machi pinned me down.
"Stop! LET ME GO!!!" I felt a burning sensation on my body as I struggled, but I felt Machi's tears hitting my face as her grip weakened, and so did mine. She eventually collapsed on top of me and I just snuggled closer to her, crying once again in these many days that passed.
'Do I really have the power to protect those I care about?'
