Chapter 1: Memories (1)

When a dragon slayer powerful enough to imbue fear upon every living dragons suddenly took in a young dragon as his disciple, chaos and disaster shook every corner of the world. The anger and resentment felt by the dragons toward that slayer was immeasurable.

Dean Slain, that so-called slayer, was a young and formidable man from a powerful clan of dragon slayers. Known for his exceptional talent even among his peers, he soon became one of the few to be granted the reputable title of 'slayer'. This happened when he was only at the age of seven. A truly remarkable achievement for a young boy.

Being called a genius, huge expectations from his family followed suit; probably too much for a boy his age. But nonetheless, he always did what was expected of him no matter his personal feelings. He locked and buried his own desires deep inside for the sake of his family.

<Dragons are arrogant yet powerful creatures which should be killed for the sake of the balance of this world>. This was what was plastered on Dean's head from the moment he was trained to be a slayer. He had his own doubts back then, but he never questioned them out in front of his elders. He was never impressed by their words nor their teachings to begin with.

However, it was on his first dragon kill when he learned that dragons were indeed arrogant creatures. If ever left unsatisfied, they did not have the sentiment to forgive others for what they did wrong. This was the conclusion he came to in that moment, and this shaped him to be the infamous ruthless and merciless person he was of the time.

But alas, we never knew what the future has in store for us. Whether it be a joy of luck or a terrible misfortune, there's always the element of surprise waiting for us somewhere in the future.

The same goes for Dean Slain when he encountered a young dragon in the endless desert after his battle with a notorious desert dragon. The bronze-coloured dragon who was pulling his sleeves with its tiny front paws looked at him as if it was hungry.

"Let go or I'll kill you like your mother." Dean spat the words. However, the young dragon never took its eyes off Dean. This happened until Dean unsheathe his sword and aimed directly at the young dragon's neck.

"H-Hungie." The dragon spoke with teary eyes. Dean stared the dragon, letting curiosity slowly took over his mind. Dragons were arrogant, he knew that. They did not have compassion, he knew. He knew all of it too well. Yet the dragon in front of him was shedding its tears. Maybe he was curious or he find it amusing, the next words that came out of his mouth amazed even himself. "Fine I'll feed you until you become a nuisance for me."

Well, irony has it that the dragon never became a nuisance for Dean. It even became the only disciple Dean would ever had in his whole life. However, this baffling news was not taken lightly among the other dragons.

The slayer who had massacred a number of their species was suddenly taking one of their own as his disciple. It was outrageous to them. They wanted him dead. However, for the mighty dragons who wanted nothing else more than the death of this slayer, there was one simple fact which could never be overlooked.

It was the fact that they could not kill this overpowered slayer.

The pent up frustration of this was the cause of triggering chaos everywhere the dragons went while cursing the name of that slayer-- causing the bearer of the name to be centre of hatred everywhere he went. Mountains distorted and the sea became a bed of fire from the battles that followed. Wherever that slayer went became a wasteland, devoid of life form.

Dragons and humans alike, he was detested by them since the cause of their misery was due to him and him alone. Finally after the situation ran out of control, Dean came to one solution.

"Lyndielth." He called over his disciple who he once saved in the endless desert.

"Is there anything I can do for you, master?" His disciple sat beside him, as she polymorph herself into that of a beautiful lady.

"As a dragon slayer, there is only so much which can actually end my life. The same goes for dragons. You see, dragons and slayers exist to keep each other in check, so there can be balance in this world. In my youth, I used to think this was a useless teaching of my elders, but now I know better. So Lyndielth..."

Tears instantly fell from Lyndielth's eyes. She knew the intentions behind the words of her master, she knew him that well, yet she could not speak a word. The frustration and betrayal she felt from her master turned her silent tears into that of a loud sobbing.

"You're a dragon, Lyndielth. Yet you never failed to amuse me by shedding your tears in front of me. You know, this was something which dragons are known to be incapable of." Dean let out a dry laugh. "But you're a special case. Because of this special trait of yours, I took you in that time. I'm a selfish person. So I am going to make one last selfish request from you."

Lyndielth raised her head and stared at the eyes of Dean, her precious master. "Please... I don't want this, master."

Dean gave her a soft smile. He raised his hand and patted her hair, a sign of his affection for her. Lyndielth quietly looked at him. Her eyes were vague and filled with indecisiveness. Then she heard the plea of her master. "Please, Lyndielth."

"Ahh! I hate you master. After all the years we went through, you decide to leave me alone. By myself. I hate you so much."

Lyndielth put her hand on her master's head and start casting a spell, a powerful spell. As she did that, tears never failed to flow down her eyes.

Lyndielth could see the lower half of her master's face which was smiling and seemed to be mumbling something.

"Yes, I know. It's okay. After all these years, I realized I'm the arrogant one all along."

The spell completed and the body of the infamous Dean Slain turned to dust. However, Dean Slain has yet to realize the spell his disciple cast on him was never intended to end his life.
