Chapter 18: Saved By A Child!

"You dare hit me, skeleton?!" the demon roared as he slowly paced towards Kai with threatening intent.

Kai's voice suddenly turned into one that was far more solemn, he was somewhat imitating Gort. Due to his looks, he actually managed to put on an impactful front.

"You are the one who dares, useless twerp!" Kai yelled as he activated his skill, Light of Dead as the high-level necromancy skill covered the ground and caused all animals and critters around to escape and hide in fear. There were no bodies around Kai that could be turned into zombies, either. He could only use his skill to bluff.

Kai added with zeal, "Did you really think a higher creature such as myself could be toyed with by the likes of you?!"

The demon felt unsure. Even though the creature in front of him was sold like some commodity and was silent all this time, the demon knew of Skeleton Lords. They were fearsome foes, each an adversary worth an army. He felt a slight spark of fear in his chest on the off chance that somehow the Skeleton Lord was simply dormant all this time. The demon soldier stopped in his tracks, examining Kai.

"After I was so merciful to let you all live, you come looking for me?!" Kai roared. Kai's Light of Death pulsed like a wave that could overwhelm everyone as fear washed over the demon.

Even though the demon knew there could be no way a Skeleton Lord would allow itself to be humiliated in such a manner, a wrong move would mean his instantaneous death here. Coupled with the fact that the skill he used was used to decimate demonic legions before by other Skeleton Lords, he started cowering.

Kai prayed to all the Gods he could think of as he bluffed his way through. If he had a face, he'd be dead already, he had the worst poker face. He was almost grateful for his horrifying visage for once.

"Re- re- revered Skeleton Lord, we only meant to ensure your safety until you felt like your revered self once more!" the demon soldier muttered the words as he started sweating. He inwardly cursed his Lady, the Succubus Naamah for even daring to buy such a creature. It was so obvious, how could there be a weak Skeleton Lord? They were utter calamities!

"Prostrate yourself, puny child!" Kai commanded. He felt giddy as he turned his back on the demon, holding back his laughter. The fact that his voice could change and be more fearsome if he willed it to be, really worked in his favour. Of course, anyone could make their voices deeper, but none could do it like Kai could.

The demon slapped his head on the ground so fast that a slight bit of blood came out, spilling on the ground.

"If you can grant this foolish one mercy once more, I will sing your praises until my death. Please, grace me with your name so I can spread your esteemed name to be an object of fear and respect!"

"Huh?! My name?" Kai panicked. After a brief silence, the demon almost wanted to raise his head when Kai bellowed, "You mean you don't know my name, still?!" He could at this point, see more demons coming this way. He had to run.

"I give you the job of figuring my esteemed name. I now have to leave to destroy a city!" Kai quickly said and ran into the forest. He ran towards the child as his eyes suddenly caught his figure hiding behind a tree.

"Yes, I swear on the lives of my family that-" the demon stood prostrating on the ground, continuously swearing oaths, not daring to raise his head until he was interjected by an alluring voice that was ever so familiar to himself. It was his lady, Naamah.

"Big oaf," she commented in dissatisfaction. However, after turning away from the clueless demon soldier still going on about the Skeleton Lord, she wore a large smile on his face. This truly meant she had made a great purchase. It was really a weak Skeleton Lord!

"What shall we do, Lady Naamah?" one of the advisors asked. "We can send out search parties."

"This proves it really was a rare undead. I want it," she said.

Even though the advisor should have been used to it by now, Naamah's alluring nature was something sinister. Even if they didn't serve under her, he felt that he would still do everything in his power just to keep her satisfied.

"Of course, I'll make the necessary arrangements."

"Thank you, Aldan," Naamah responded as words could almost be seen to have come to life while dropping off her lips.

Aldan, the demon carrying the books and always standing next to her, proceeded to gather most of the soldiers and organised them into groups of three. The groups were to stay not too far from one another, and if one found the skeleton, the others would be alerted through a chain reaction. Aldan was quite proud of himself, unless the skeleton managed to outrun his forces, they would find him soon.

Inside the forest, barely out of the earshot of the soldiers already in the process of mobilization to search him, was a skeleton running, with a child on his shoulders to boot. The child seemed to be having the time of his life, flailing his arms in the air and just enjoying the ride while laughing in joy.

"Damn it, kid!" Kai mumbled under his breath and yelled at the kid, "Stop making so much noise."

"No, I saved you. You are mine now!" the kid spoke for the first time, kicking Kai's ribcage with his little feet to make him go even faster. Considering Kai's stature, the kid had never seen the world from such a height. It was interesting to him on so many levels.

Kai couldn't refute the kid and could only grit his teeth for now. He was getting more stressed. Not only did he have to survive somehow, but he also now had the child's life to worry about. Kai figured he had run enough, so he stopped to reassess and decide where to go.

"So," Kai asked nicely, "where do we go from here?"

The kid pointed in a certain direction, sure of himself, "That way!"
