Chapter 7: The Storm

After a moment where everyone pondered on what they should do, George exposed his thoughts.

"The attack is coming from the west and there is an evacuation party going to the east. I'd wager the city won't stand for long. I say we gather everyone and flee to the east."

Sam had been shaken by this sudden emergency and responded with a hopeful look aimed at George.

"Okay. I'm going home and bringing everyone towards the east. Where should we meet?"

But John was shaking his head as he calmly exposed the problem with the plan.

"The evacuation party is a trap. The huge crowd leaving to the east isn't even headed straight towards Haitian. They are mere bait to help save the real evacuation that will leave from the southeast."

Tom looked rather downhearted.

"There is no way we get to join the elite party."

Diane spoke in a slightly exasperated tone with her eyes lifted to the ceiling.

"We have to go for it, somehow!"

"There is no option for us other than joining the public evacuation party."

Judy's words seemed to have settled the exchange. And as such, after only a few seconds of silence, George sighed and laid out the plan.

"We will leave to the east and look for an opportunity to separate from the convoy later. Everyone get back home and get your family to pack up and leave. We'll meet at the evacuation point."

"I will need some help." Judy spoke up in a worried tone. "We won't go far by car and I can't handle my brother and his things alone on foot."

To which John responded. "I will come. I have nothing to take and Joe can warn my parents, they won't have any issues with the evacuation. Don't wait for us once you're ready to leave. We will catch up later."

"Fine by me."

"Thanks a lot John!"

Judy and John quickly boarded Judy's car and headed west to help her blind brother out. Meanwhile, everyone headed back to their family and started leaving to the east as soon as possible. Tom was already at his own home and his family didn't have much to pack up so they left a few minutes later. Everyone else had headed east and was helping their own family getting ready to evacuate as soon as possible.

Arriving at Judy's house, the pair hurriedly rushed inside. Judy quickly explained the situation to her elder brother and helped John pack up and put everything in the car. The trio then headed back east through the busy streets, but they knew they wouldn't be able to drive for very long. Time was of the essence, they had already taken long enough to reach Judy's house and pack everything up. Every minute wasted would only make it harder to navigate to the evacuation zone. Exactly as expected, a few kilometres later, they encountered a traffic jam. Cars were stopped and left behind mostly empty. Every newcomer that stopped behind the previous cars would quickly realize they had no other choice but to step out and finish the journey on foot. This was where the hard part started for Judy's brother. AlexKan Moskk was a 23 years old young man that had developed significant visual impairment, to the point of becoming fully blind, through a condition known as ROP. His premature birth, associated with a lack of proper diagnosis and treatment, were the most likely culprits and caused his complete blindness before he even turned 20.

Once out of the car, Judy was busy helping her brother navigate forward while John was carrying whatever luggage they had brought along. While the trio was slowly walking through the streets, the rest of the friends had already gathered at the evacuation point that was situated between the eastern exit of the Third and Fourth Sky. The scene there was absolutely stunning. There was a sea of people headed to the east, reaching far out beyond the Fourth Sky's exit, halfway across to the Fifth Sky border. The column was moving chaotically forward, trying to escape the fate of death. Some had even abandoned everyone behind and were running far ahead, trying to reach the safety of another city faster. But there were very few of those individuals, they simply stood out as they were running on the side of the crowd.

As the group of friends with their families started leaving, not waiting for the trio, the already incredible view somehow turned even more splendid. Yet, the beauty was not noticed by anyone as a huge wave of fear, panic and anxiety spread. An extremely loud noise had thundered.

The dome of the Fifth Sky had cracked. The Fifth Sky had shattered.

This was unheard of. This meant the army of monsters had broken through and were now going to attack the next layer. Everyone prayed the monsters didn't try to surround the Fourth Sky and thus notice the evacuation going on. Unfortunately, those hopes were shattered just like the Fifth Sky had been. The attack coming from the west had no intention to even try to catch those fleeing. Nor did they need to. Everyone's eyes were currently focused on the forest line far off on the horizon. The worst news possible had turned into a reality: a second army of monsters had shown up. It may have been half the size of the previous, but that was more than enough to slaughter every human here. This was the moment panic finally took over completely.

Both the news of the Fifth Sky being broken and of the second enemy armed forces appearing, reached Judy and John's phones less than a minute later. The decision was simple: stay and die or take a chance fleeing north. Despair and panic had caught hold of most, but John was completely calm. Emotions had long overwhelmed him to an extent that they had left his body entirely. He looked at Judy straight in the eyes and said in a perfectly calm voice "Let's go north. We still have a chance. We'll figure things out from there."

Quite a few people around them had also started scrambling north. Luckily for the three youngsters, they had not advanced east too far, so they were still far behind the pack that had reached the evacuation point.
