Chapter 6: Top of the World

Perched atop of his mighty tower, an interesting-looking young man in his late teens peered below at the great green expanse beneath him.

"What a fine day to be alive."

He took a deep sigh and ran his hand through his red-dyed hair. Then, with a pop of his fingers, he opened a bottle of whiskey and took a quick swig of it.

He peered into the distance with his eagle-like gaze and saw a tree trunk floating across the great blue sky. Aboard the tree trunk were two adolescent children bickering with each other. One had pure blonde hair, and the other had dark but with remarkably blue eyes.

"How can you be afraid of simple wind magic?" Petra yelled at Eve.

"MAYBE IT'S BECAUSE I CAN'T USE MAGIC?"

"Right. So you really are useless." Petra took a deep sigh and continued to keep the trunk afloat. With intense concentration, sweat began to form on her brows.

"Interesting... But who is it trailing behind them?" the young man thought to himself as he saw not so far off in the distance a brooding individual flying behind them. He was cloaked with advanced invisibility magic, making it impossible for fresh-blood like Eve and Petra to notice him.

The man stood up and grinned mightily.

"The newbies sure arrived early this year. When was the last time I ate..."

When Eve and Petra came across the green grassland, they came to a stop.

"Finally!" exclaimed Eve as he slumped onto the green scenery he was so grateful to see. After hours of flying, he had pissed his trousers multiple times and was in a terrible state.

Petra was in an even worse condition. She had spent all of her mana reserves to maintain their flight and her emotional reserves to deal with Eve's nagging. Together, they collapsed and attempted to recoup from their long journey.

After a few moments, Petra got up and assessed the surroundings.

"It appears we made it to the western region of the Underworld. If we continue from here, we can reach the trading empire of Lorinth soon. Once we're there, we can try to find a way to earn the tokens we so desperately need."

"Sounds good to me," Eve, still lying on the grass. "But let's rest first. We still have a long way to go, right?"

"Okay, we can set up camp," Petra said, exasperated. So she went to work using her magic to construct a tent and a fire camp.

Soon, nightfall came, and the two huddled around the fire for warmth.

"Hey Petra, do you have any dreams?"

Petra looked at Eve, surprised.

"Why do you care?"

"Well, it's just I don't really have a dream of my own. I have always been confined to my room, and I never really talked to anyone else. I only have ever had one friend, and he... " Eve looked at his feet, feeling blood rush up to his cheeks.

Petra looked at him strangely but responded nonetheless.

"I will become an Overlord and take retribution on this world," she said with confidence and fury. Eve looked at her, confused, and she continued.

"I come from a family of renowned swordsmen. There were great expectations for me from my family because I inherited the family's strongest technique, as well as possessing an incredible affinity for magic."

"But, I didn't want to go to the Underworld. I didn't want to risk my life for something so ridiculous as gaining power. That is until Luna was sent here and utterly slaughter." Petra grimaced at the thought.

"Who's Luna?" asked Eve.

"My older sister. She was amazing, bright, talented, and kind. She taught me everything I know about the sword, and she helped me bear with the intense training our family put upon us. After we heard that she died here in just her first week, I knew I had to get stronger so I can take revenge against those who wronged her."

"Do you know who killed her?"

"No, but our family is special. Each of us has a unique scent that we attach to anyone we meet, and we can recognize each other's scents. So if they have met Luna, I will know."

"Wait, then doesn't that mean your scent is on me now? Am I stinky now?"

With a blast of air, Petra knocked Eve back a few feet.

"Not. Funny." Petra looked at Eve angrily.

"Ouch, okay, sorry!" Eve rubbed the shoulder that got hit and grinned mischievously at her.

"Go to sleep now; we will continue our journey tomorrow."

"Okay." Eve turned around and started walking towards the makeshift tent Petra made. When he reached the tent, he couldn't hear Petra walking.

"Well, are you coming?" Eve said, exasperated, and looked back to see what Petra was doing.

Instead of seeing Petra standing up and walking towards him like he was expecting, he saw her head starting to roll across the grass field.

Where she was standing was a figure with red hair and red eyes, licking his fingers with the blood spewing from her neck.

"Delicious."
