Chapter 3: Everything You See Is Not What It Seems

Everyone watched as the man's lifeless body hit the ground. They couldn't believe their eyes. Someone had died. The shock left them staring at the dead body in silence. No one moved nor even dared to breathe.

"He's dead!" Shouted a villager, breaking the silence and initiating panic.

Immediately, everyone started panicking. It was frightening to know that someone had already died after only a day inside the dome.

"I don't want to die!" A group of villagers shouted in panic.

The chief froze stiff as a log, he had never witnessed death with his own eyes.

"Why are you just standing there? Do something!" Shouted the villagers.

"I... I... I don't understand what's happening." Said the chief.

The villagers started to doubt chief Bian's leadership as he stood still with his eyes wide open, staring at the body in a puddle of blood. The disgust he had at the scene wretched through his neck. Holding his mouth shut as the contents of his stomach threatened to leave him.

"Everyone! Calm down." A muscular villager with brown eyes and short black hair stepped forward confidently. "It's not chief Bian's fault that villager died. After all, he rushed to drink from the river before knowing what's in it." The villager further explained trying to calm down the ignorant villagers from blaming the chief. "Would it be a surprise that whoever is in charge of the dome, poisoned the water as a test?!"

"You could be right but he just stood there and did nothing to save him." A villager from the crowd shouted.

"Everything happened so quickly! There's no way one man could save him!" He argued. "Why didn't you or anyone here try saving him?! Blame yourselves not the Chief!

Everyone thought about what the muscular villager said and accepted the sad reality that they didn't have the experience to save the man's life. Finally, the villagers came to their senses and offered apologies to their Chief.

"May I ask, what's your name?" Zuko asked the muscular villager from before.

"My name is Onslaught. Nice to meet the son of the Chief... Zuko is it?"

"Yes, I'm Zuko."

After some time, the chief snapped out of his daydream and decided to immediately figure out if there was something wrong with the water.

"Everyone fill your buckets with water and let's head back!"

"Why? Won't it just kill us?" A villager asked.

"Do not drink the water! I have an idea when we get back to the village." The chief stated.

The chief had an idea that required wood that the other group was gathering. He thought it would be best to head back to the village first.

Meanwhile, the group that was gathering wood was just about finished. However, before they could properly finish, one of the villagers saw the dark silhouette of a figure among the trees.

"Am I seeing things?" A villager talking to himself aloud.

"What are you talking about? Let's just get this last tree and go." Another villager insisted.

Suddenly, he saw the shadow falling down the trees.

"Look out!" A young villager who had spiky black hair, and hazel eyes filled with anger. He was about 5'6 in height and had soft tanned skin, but who could tell he's been through a lot with his bright white smile? shouted.

Immediately the villagers huddled together around the young villager as a way of defense. Hoping that whatever fell from the tree would run in fear if it saw the villagers with a numbers advantage.

The villager's eyes met with a dangerous beast. Its skin was as black as coal and it had blood-red eyes that seemed to stare into his soul. It stretched 10 feet across and stood at the size of a full-grown human. Its back was riddled with long sharp spikes and it had a tail that looked as if it was made by the devil himself. With each breath it took, the air around it became neon green with a strong sense of poison. Even its teeth and claws looked as if they specialized in cutting through its prey like butter.

Scared witless, the villagers started drowning in sweat. Not knowing that the beast is fueled by the more fear it smells, the more aggressive it gets.

"What do we do?! What do we do?!" Yelled a villager in horror.

It was already too late, the beast had already made its first move. It ran and pounced at the villagers recklessly just wanting to have a feast. Everyone quickly dodged the beast's attack except the young village boy. Stiff as a log in fear as the beast knocks him over and stood over him ready to make him his next meal.

No one wanted to witness a young boy's death but how would they save him?

Recklessly, a slim-built villager picked up a broken branch and threw it at the beast to get its attention.

"No! Why are you bringing it to us?! I don't want to die! I don't want to die!" A villager whimpered.

Fortunately for the young boy, the beast identified the slim-built villager as a threat and decided to attack him instead. He stood there looking the beasts in its eyes running towards him and snapping aggressively, instantly he regretted his decision. He immediately realized that branch was far from enough to stop this beast. It then tackled the villager to the ground in anger.

The beast sank its teeth into his right arm before tossing him into the side of an old tree which crumbled upon impact. Pain then crippled his body leaving him unable to retaliate. He was in big trouble.

The beast enraged from tasting the villager's blood, headed straight for the kill. The villager knew his time had come, and there was nothing they could do to prevent the beast from killing them.

A rock smacked into the side of the beast's skull, causing it to howl in pain. The young villager had tossed a rock at the beast to gain time for the villager who had saved him.

"Over here! You won't be eating him!" Trembled the young villager.

The beast angrier than ever shifted its focus once more. Unfortunately, there were no more pebbles for the young villager to throw at the beast. His only aim was to be the next meal so that everyone could flee.

"I'll be there with you soon... Mom... Dad..." Whispered the young villager to himself while he gazed at the sky.

The other villagers just stood by, waiting for the opportunity to depart with the wood they had gathered.

When the young villager heard his name, he snapped out of his reverie. While in severe anguish, the villager faintly yelled out his name, "Mateo..!" Who had spiky black hair, and hazel eyes filled with anger. Mateo was about 5'6 in height and had soft tanned skin, but who could tell he's been through a lot with his bright white smile?

He then returned his attention to the beast charging at him, turning around to flee before tripping over the identical branch that the other villager had thrown at the beast before.

Mateo laid there terrified, not wanting to witness his own death. He wished it was all just a horrible dream that he would wake up from, but he knew better than to wish for things that would never come true. This was fact, and no amount of wishing could save anyone.

Before he knew it the monster had already pounced at him with its jaw wide open and teeth smeared in blood from the villager's arm.
