Chapter 2: Are You Jesting Me?

I once again looked at the screen wavering in front of me with disbelief.

------------------------------------------

Rescue Mission!

It appears that a man has been injured by a possible

criminal. The authorities are not present to help the

person in need. Accomplish your duty as the

Vigilante! help the person in need and find and

exterminate the criminal.

Upon Success :

1. Gain an additional buff of +200% Attack, Defence and Vitality for 3 days.

2. Gain an ally ship with House of Kariehem.

Upon Failure :

1. Death.

Note : If the bearer chooses to ignore this mission, the effects of Fatigue and Hunger will become 300% more effective.

------------------------------------------

This is a total scam! I virtually don't have any other choice than to accept and somehow succeed in this mission!

If I lose, I die - possibly by the hands of the criminal - and if I don't accept the mission, then I die a painful death from certain starvation.

Why!? Why did whatever deity that reincarnated me here had to give me such shit situations? Why did I not get a perfect start like so many protagonists I read about!? This is utterly unfair!

.

.

.

Hah, no gain in crying over something that's out of my hand. Let's start by talking to the guy at least.

Begrudgingly I approached the man. The man, becoming aware of my presence quickly put up a fierce look despite the pathetic state he was in.

"W-who is there! Who-whoever is there pl-ease he- *cough*" the man choked on his blood whilst asking for my help. I was now feeling a bit bitter on my previous choice of not helping the man but oh well, I doubt many people would have involved themselves in such a troubling situation out of their willingness.

Hell I would've probably buried the event deep in my mind - not ever trying to remember it again - if it weren't for this stupid system.

Hah, enough rambling, the man was getting quite impatient. I bent down to maintain eye level so as he could see me. The man's expression changed into one with weariness and slight hint of hope, "You-You're not with the princi-principality of Ersthelm ri-right?" the man asked me.

I very obviously didn't recognize the name, so that would be a no, though I didn't know if the previous occupant of the body - the real Marques, if he existed - was involved or not. But even if I was affiliated with them, why in the world would I even tell him that, seeing that he clearly held some sort of hostility towards them.

Forget it. It was an idiotic question to begin with. Instead of replying right away, I first helped him stand up, though when I touched him he seemed reluctant, he eventually gave in seeing no other way. "No, I am not aware about them. So certainly, I'm not with them." I said as we started to walk slowly while I was supporting him.

"What? Ho-How are you*cough*n-not aware ab-*cough*about the princi-pality? are you not fr-om around here?" the man asked me. Heh, wonder how he'll react if I said I was from another world - still assuming that I was not just in some sort of coma fever dream (that theory was really a favourite one of every anime conspirator).

Well probably not a good idea to tell him that - not until I know more about this world at least. "No, I am not from around here." I told him vaguely. "Thought so, th-that*cough*explai-ns things a-a lot cl-*cough* *cough* *cough*" suddenly the man started spitting more blood, and was loosing his balance. I held him firmly and said, "Please don't speak much, that will only worsen your condition. Can you just point where we could get help? I can carry you there."

The man slowly nodded and started to point me towards his home. After a few minutes, I felt a sharp pang inside my heart, "Gah!!" I whimpered aloud, gaining the attention of the man. He looked at me worryingly, and I assured him that I was fine. At the corner of my eye, I saw a screen appearing in front of me.

Warning

1/2 H.P deducted because of the Hunger effect. Current H.P : 67.5/150

------------------------------------------

Dammit, I will have to get some food before this becomes a serious problem, and some rest too while I'm at it, my body's aching like a bitch.

While I was mindlessly following the low grunts of the man, we reached our destination. To put it bluntly, it was a mansion. A very regal looking mansion. Golden embroidery was integrated in almost every aspect and the whole thing was painted in red - almost maroon - type of colour. It was all very ostentatious.

As I stopped admiring the mansion, I looked in front of me. There was a very bulky man covered in silver armour approaching me with rapid speed.

Fuck! He had a sword in hand and was clearly out for my blood! Before I had any chance to react he closed the distance between us to a mere feet. Not thinking much I dropped the injured man and dodged the sword by mere inches.

Phew, praise the [Nimble] skill! that was clearly beyond my capabilities if not for the 150% boost. The armoured man didn't give me much time to think though, as he snapped out of whatever daze I had send him into by showing my sudden aptness.

Slash! I dodged another one of those swings, and another, and another, and another. This continued for about a minute before my fatigue took over me and I wasn't able to dodge a sideward slash.

Argh!! a flesh wound traveling across my chest and even my hands was inflicted and as I was falling to the ground due to not being able to bear with pain, I saw a system prompt.

------------------------------------------

Warning

A life threatening wound has been inflicted! -10 H.P will be deducted every 10 minutes if the bearer does not receive immediate treatment.

------------------------------------------

Are you joking with me!?

Hah, seems like I am cursed with untimely deaths.

.

.

Not after just about an hour after getting reincarnated.

I blacked out.

-0-

I woke up, surprisingly. Where was I? My body was feeling very much better than before. Though the hunger was still persistent as it had been before I—

Wait, didn't I die yet again? How was I feeling my body?

Groggily I opened my eye lids. Instantly I was blinded by very bright light. Ah, I was surrounded by so much darkness these past few day— wait, was it hours actually? Really, has it really been just a few hours since I died and got reincarnated and almost died again? The realisation was quite a frightening one. Just a few hours and my life became upside down.

A few moments, and my eyes had adjusted to the surrounding light. The first thing I saw was a chandelier - a very expensive looking one - hanging from the ceiling.

Wait, was I inside the mansion that I was eyeing before I almost died?

Weird sentence to think about.

Anyways, it seemed plausible, perhaps the injured man saved me? Who knows. As I finally decided to sit up, I saw a woman sitting beside my bed, staring at me. When our eyes met, she spoke.

"Ah, you are finally awake!"
