Chapter 19: Refrigerator

When Lewis left her alone to grab a drink, he kept tossing his head from side to side. Even when he opened the fridge, Lewis paused.

He clicked his tongue, annoyed. The image of her sulking kept flashing before his eyes; it annoyed him because he didn't want to pry.

Lewis didn't want to step out of his bounds. Although Devon had been stepping on the line, he didn't want to keep pressing on the matter.

Well, he had terrible nightmares, too. The least thing he wanted was someone asking him about it. It just annoyed him to the core.

Therefore, he didn't ask her. Still, not knowing was just as frustrating.

"Darn it…" He muttered under his breath. "Why do I even care? Once she recovers her memories, she'll be back to how she used to be. I better not get attached too much."

As he uttered his words, he took out a bottled water. Without a second hesitation, he chugged it as if someone who ran a marathon.

Once he had his fill, he hissed. "Not get attached, huh? I'm just helping her since I'm her guardian."

Right. Lewis was Devon's current guardian. Since she's been estranged with her family, and Devon didn't have friends, he's the only one she got.

'She should have made more friends and had fun.' He muttered internally.

If only Devon had a social life, he wouldn't be tangled in a complicated situation. Although he's thankful that she had been helping him, he realized he's more attached to her than he expected.

In retrospect, he didn't think about it since he got used to her presence. She's like his "homie"; someone he could hang out and sleep with with no tension between them; be it sexual tension or anything else.

It was like having a sibling. That's what the previous Devon to him.

But now that she's showing more character, he would notice, obviously. Be it unintentional, he would always notice.

"Damn it." Lewis clicked his tongue, grinding his teeth lightly. Not that he was falling for her immediately.

In his eyes, he just couldn't help but see she's actually a woman. Or rather, a human. He never thought he'd ever see her smile so brightly, blush so obviously, and tremble in fear.

He didn't know she's capable of expressing such emotions. Devon only smiled evilly. She never blushed, and she'd be the one to cause others to tremble in fear.

"Go away, woman." Lewis waved over his head, erasing the images of the new Devon away.

"It's time for dinner. Derek should be…"

Suddenly, Lewis trailed off as regret flickered across his eyes. Earlier, his assistant came over to bring them food.

However, since Devon was clinging onto him, he yelled at him to go away. Now that he realized that, another frustrated sigh escaped his lips.

"Fast foods are not good for her. Even if I order something, the doctor advised me to let her eat healthy food only. Derek will nag me if I ask him to bring me food again." He sighed helplessly.

"Are you alright, my lord?"

As soon as her voice reach his ear, Lewis flinched. He immediately turned his head in her direction. His expression instantly went blank.

"I should be the one asking: are you okay now?" He asked tonelessly.

"Mhmm?" Devon tilted her head to the side.

"Uh." Upon his realization, Lewis rocked his head back and forth lightly. "Are you alright now?"

"My, yes. Thank you for thinking of me. I hope I can repay the favor someday." As usual, Devon expressed her gratitude politely and genuinely.

However, that's not what he wanted to hear. Thinking of her? Repay him someday?

"Right…" Yet Lewis didn't point it out and let it be.

"You appear to be in a predicament, my friend. Do you need my assistance?" She asked, out of the goodness of her heart.

As Devon set her eyes on the open fridge, she glided beside him. When the cool air coming from the fridge embraced her, the corner of her lips stretched broadly.

He glanced at her, raising his brow. "This is a refrigerator. An item to preserve a corpse."

"What?"

"An appliance where we store food so they don't spoil." He corrected, looking away immediately. Well, it was worth it to the try other methods to make her remember her previous self.

While it was early. However, he figured by the shock expression that instantly resurfaced on her face how terrible the idea was.

"An appliance to store food…" she muttered, leaning closer towards the fridge.

Her eyes scanned the items inside. There wasn't much in it, but they were all ingredients and waters.

"This world is truly fascinating beyond words." She commented, almost breathless as she grinned at seeing the foods stored inside.

"Before you get all fascinated, the problem is we don't have food." Lewis resisted from rolling his eyes.

"We don't?" She turned her head to him, cocking her head. "We have fruits!"

"An apple is not enough for a meal. Wait here while I cook something."

"You will cook?" Taken aback, Devon blinked her sparkling eyes.

"Tsk. Don't look at me like that." Annoyed, Lewis focused his eyes towards the fridge.

Without a word, he took a step forward, causing her to step aside. His action made her frown temporarily before she leaned closer.

"Can I lend you a hand?" She enthusiastically requested.

"Don't get too close." Lewis warned in disinterest, as he bent over to see what he could use.

However, Devon only drew away a little and mimicked him. She bent over, scanning the inside of the fridge.

Before he could pick a tomato, Lewis stopped and let out a frustrated sigh. His brow constantly twitched as lines appeared on his forehead. Obviously, he could feel her enthusiasm just right beside him.

"I said..." His heart instantly dropped to his stomach as Devon faced him the same time he did.

Blink. Blink. Blink.

Devon only blinked innocently, unfazed at the palm length distance between their faces. "You look pale, my friend? Are you alright?"

'No, I'm not.' was what he answered in his head.
