Chapter 18: Chapter Eighteen

"Prince Ron, think. What can you do best?"

The Prince went silent for a while, thinking seriously then he said; "My mother always tells me that I eat fast..."

Ludiciel chuckled and said; "Prince Ron, you do not have to participate. It's not like there's anyone you need to impress. The person that should do all the work is your sister. Besides, she said she's going to sing"

Ron gasped. His sister knew about it before him?! Unacceptable! She already has the upper hand!!

And nobody to impress? What about that insufferable king who saved his life and stole his heart? His beloved King who nearly choked him to death? The King with the heart that's as cold as ice.

He has to impress him and find a way to get rid of those terrible mood swings he gets. They were getting in the way of him stealing his beloved's heart!

"Rose is going to sing? What song?" he asked.

Ludiciel shrugged. "How would I know? She just told me to provide her with a lot of things that improves the voice, like honey and raw eggs. I think she must have already started practicing"

The Prince wanted to curse Ludiciel. How could he inform his sister first? Now he was many hours late! "Prince Ludiciel, things like this, please inform me first"

"Eh? But why?"

"Because I like to engage in such things" Ron said. "I'm the type of person that likes to plan before doing something. I don't like feeling pressured. I must participate in this talent show. If you had informed me earlier, I would have decided to sing first!"

"But Prince Ron, can you sing? Singing is not easy..."

"Says who? You just wait. I'll shock you all at the feast tomorrow. Let's hurry and get my measurements taken. I have to start practicing"

Ron already knew what he was going to do. He just needed a little bit of help from the queen mother.

King Zedekiel should get ready to be blown away!

********

"Mother, what colour does the King love the most?" Ron asked. He and Queen mother were playing chess in the courtyard after breakfast and he was woefully losing. He blamed it on the fact that it's been so long since he played so he was rusty.

The Queen mother was enjoying herself. It's also been a while since she played but she saw that she still had it in her. She felt Ron was just a bad player.

"Why do you ask Ron dear?" She asked, quite curious.

Ron already had an excuse made up. He had thought of it yesterday when he kept thinking of what to do. He smiled, as if it was something to be proud of.

"Well, my sister wants to look her best tonight and she also wants to impress the King so I thought of asking you of his best colour. You see, I see it as a good step to winning his heart"

His sister my foot! Ron wanted the information for himself! What better way than to start his own campaign right at the feast? The King might start developing feelings for him if he sees him dressed in a colour that he likes.

The Queen mother thought it made sense so she said; "He's particularly fond of the colour black. That's what he wears most of the time. If he wears something else, it's because he was forced by me"

Ron smiled as he remembered the first time he met Zedekiel. Dressed in black from head to toe, holding a severed head. What a first meeting with his beloved. At the second meeting, he threw a dagger to his throat! This love of his just likes violence.

"Ah black. That's a fine colour. I'll surely tell my sister"

"Tell me what?" a familiar voice said, slightly startling the players. Ron turned to find his sister right behind him.

!!!!

What sorcery is this?!

He finally got something for himself and his sister wants to snatch it!

"Princess Rose, you have the most wonderful brother" Queen mother said. "He really loves and cares about you. He was asking me what colour my son likes the most so he can aid you in winning his heart"

Aid who?! Ron wanted to aid himself not his sister!

Rose was elated. She turned to Ron, wearing a big smile. "You're the best Ron! I'll write another letter to father. He'll be very happy to know you're taking good care of me. So tell me, what's his favourite colour?"

With a stiff smile, Ron replied; "Black"

His sister's smile grew wider. She had actually never worn a black dress before. Their mother felt the colour was ominous for females. Rose wasn't one to believe in such superstitions so she was excited to wear black. With a smile, she excused herself to go prepare for the feast. There were only a few hours left!

Ron was devastated. His plans had been thwarted. Now, he'd have to find a different colour. As he was thinking, his moves on the chessboard became poorer and poorer. Queen mother won five times in a row!

"Ron dear, I think you're tired. Maybe you should go rest before the feast" Queen mother advised. "We can play more tomorrow. I heard Tariel and Sariel say they want to play some games with you too"

His mood didn't improve one bit. The Queen mother just thought he wasn't happy because he lost too many times.

"Mother, what colour do you think I should wear? I don't know what to wear honestly. There'll be a lot of people coming and I want to look my best. If not, no lady would dance with me"

Queen mother laughed. "How can no lady want to dance with you? You're so handsome. Even if you wear rags, you'll still look perfect"

The Prince couldn't help but blush. He knew he was fine but he didn't expect the Queen mother to say it like that.

"Since your sister is going to wear my son's favourite colour, why don't you wear mine?"

Ron didn't think it was a bad idea. In fact, he thought it was great. If he can't start by winning the King himself, he could start with the family! "And it is?"

"Red" she replied. "You'll look great in red. Also, make sure you save a dance for me"

His marvelous smile returned and he hugged the Queen mother. "That's wonderful mother! And don't worry. My first dance will certainly be with you!"

She laughed. Never before has she seen a human so simple, kind and warm. She sighed as she watched Ron leave. If only this human could love her son, they would be perfect and she would love to have Ron as a daughter-in-law.

Then she thought, Rose and the King weren't married yet. In fact, the King didn't love her. There should still be a chance for this lovely prince! With that thought in mind, she retired to her room.

What a fun game she would play!
