Chapter 8: Magical Experiments

In the amphitheater Zark was preparing to cast a spell on a scarecrow in a corner.

In his arsenal of spells, he possessed all the spells on the Wizard, Sorcerer, and Cleric list; having at his disposal all the schools of magic (Abjuration, Divination, Conjuration, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromancy and Transmutation), with such magical ability it would be easy to be overwhelmed by the quantity.

As if that weren't enough, even when Zark used a simple low-level magic damage spell, since his class was a full caster, his spell's damage was automatically increased due to other effects that added extra damage. As a result, a simple damage spell did vastly more damage than normal.

Zark looked to the side and saw that he was under the scrutiny of Frey and Nyos's curious eyes. His heart felt a little pressure, as he wasn't sure he was living up to his expectations.

Zark sighed and looked back at the scarecrow.

His eyes were looking at the scarecrow and looking at him closely you could tell that Zark was nervous. His goal was to confirm if he possessed the ability to use magic.

By allowing Nyos and Frey to see his 'magic experiment', his main purpose was to demonstrate his power and let them know that having him as an enemy was stupid. He had to do this before the other generals arrived.

These two along with Keil showed not the slightest sign of betrayal and he did not think they would betray him. However, if he did not possess the ability to do magic, he was not sure that he would be able to maintain his loyalty.

Nyos' attitude towards Zark felt like he had known him for some time. For him however it was as if this were his first meeting.

Although being overly paranoid is bad, it is also not wise to trust completely. In short, at this time for Zark the best idea is to be cautious. Another reason for this experiment is that, if he couldn't use magic, he could discuss it with Frey and Nyos. These two believe that this is an experiment to confirm some small details. The plan was perfect.

Zark couldn't help but be proud of his plan. But had his mind always been so calm and flexible in the past? No one could answer this question for Zark.

The doubts that he had in his mind were cast aside and he began to think about magic in his RPG. Within the game, the strength of magic spells was classified in levels from 0 to 9 and there were easily more than ten thousand spells in total separated in different types of systems, this only counting the main system and without taking into account the additional supplements created. by other publishers. Generally, Full Caster characters could only use one list of spells, and as a base mechanic, a character could only use a limited amount from that list.

Given his work as a Dungeon Master, Zark had memorized almost all the spells, this included the ones his new body could use.

When he thought about his spells something strange happened, in his mind a kind of folder was displayed along with a search engine, said folder seemed to contain all his spells, each one ordered and distributed in other folders according to their level in addition to the school to which they belonged.

The situation was extremely strange, there was no menu screen like in video games or a character sheet like in board games, it was something natural, I felt that it was part of it.

Navigating through his new mental menu, I search for the most appropriate spell to use right now.

Because there was a possibility of causing damage to an ally, he had to know exactly the area of effect of his spell. It is therefore important that the magic attack does not automatically select a number of individuals when it is launched, but rather an area of effect. The next objective is to take into account the scarecrow.

There was also another problem ... in the RPG, spellcasters had to make certain Components necessary to use magic.

The components are Verbal, Somatic and Material.

A verbal component is a spoken word. Which means that to provide a verbal component, you must be able to speak in a strong voice. A silence spell or a gag prevents speech, thus nullifying the ability to cast magic.

A somatic component is a measured and precise movement of the hand. To provide a somatic component, you must have at least one free hand, although certain especially creative (and cheat) players may argue that they can fulfill that component with another part of the body.

The Material components are the ordeal of many players, because to use magic, some spells require certain objects or special materials, although this can easily be solved with a magic Channeler (an object used to focus your magic ability) normally a wand, a wand or even a religious symbol, although some especially expensive materials cannot be replaced by a magic channeler.

Although he wasn't entirely sure, he instinctively understood how to fulfill those components.

Will your long hours as a Dungeon master do any good?

He felt the hidden power within his body surge.

Zark concentrated and slowly raised his hand, in front of his hand a semi-translucent yellow circle emerged that moved slightly clockwise, this circle had a large number of symbols and other strange writings that gave it a magical naturalization .

Was that the somatic component?

That strange floating magic circle before his hand was proof of his ability to use magic. He was satisfied because he knew that magic was now part of his own being.

A feeling of happiness arose in him, although it was dissipating quickly, he felt excited ... firmly holding his staff, it should function as a magic channel.

Immediately having the intention to use the cane, he felt a kind of connection, it was as if a USB cable was connected, now the cane was part of him.

There was only one thing missing, and he knew how to do it.

As if it were natural, I pronounce. "[Ball of fire]"

He pointed his outstretched hand at the scarecrow and the expansive fireball flew towards where he was pointing. As he expected, the fireball hit the scarecrow. After hitting him, a burst of flames followed and the surrounding land turned into a sea of fire.

Everything happened in the blink of an eye. Other than the scorched earth, nothing else was left standing.

"Ohhhhh ... so that's the power of 10d6 fire damage" Zark thought.

Nyos and Frey looked puzzled and couldn't help but laugh out loud in front of Zark.

"... Frey, prepare a new scarecrow."

"Ah. Yes, I will do it immediately! "

Frey advanced holding another scarecrow, and placed it next to the ashes of the previous one.

Zark walked in front of the scarecrow, looked at it, and cast a new spell.

"[Lightning Bolt]"

A new magic circle of similar design emerged for this time of a sky blue tone, Immediately after completing the spell I did not activate it, instead it kept waiting, approximately every 6 seconds another magic circle appeared in front of the previous one.

He continued to wait until a total of ten magic circles emerged. Suddenly a column of lightning was released heading vertically towards its chosen target within the range of the spell. The target creature and everyone in the path of the lightning would be affected, the defenseless scarecrow was completely scorched due to the large amount of electricity from the spell.

What he saw caused a slight smile in Zark, the effect of the spell was correct.

[Lightning Bolt] pertinacity to the School of Evocation [electricity]; It was a Level 3 spell, had a casting time of approximately 6 seconds, required Verbal and Somatic Components, had an intermediate Range of about 100 feet [30 m] plus another 10 feet [3 m] for each level of type class. Spellcaster that the character had, affected one or more vertical lines 30 feet (9 m) long and depending on the power of his caster, he would have to have good Reflexes to at least mitigate the damage a little.

The effect of [Lighning Bolt] was that Immediately after completing the spell, and once per subsequent turn, a vertical lightning bolt 5 feet (1.5 m) wide and 30 feet (9 m) long could be prepared that Deals 3d6 HP of electricity damage.

It is not necessary to activate the spell immediately, since other actions can be carried out while the spell is held, it is even possible to cast other spells. Each turn after the first, its "action" can be used to activate it and prepare another lightning bolt.

"Perfect."

Due to these very satisfactory experimental results, Zark couldn't help saying that.

"Lord Zark, do you want me to prepare some more scarecrows?"

Nyos still looked puzzled. He knew that Zark was a powerful spellcaster, so he didn't think this level of performance was anything special. But Zark wanted to give his viewers the opposite impression. Since the purpose of the experiment was already complete.

"… .No, I want to do another experiment."

Zark concentrated on his next spell, the results of his next test would define his next actions.

"[Shifting Between Planes]"

An immense-sized three-dimensional magic dome, nearly ten meters in radius, activated with Zark in the center.

The magic emitted white light; texts and translucent pattern markings appeared floating. These dazzling patterns were constantly moving and changing shape every second.

[Shifting Between Planes] was a 7th-level spell that allows its user or another creature to be displaced to another plane of existence, or alternate dimension. The interesting thing about this spell is that if several volunteers join their hands in a circle, 8 of them (at most) can be affected at the same time by the plane displacement. It is almost impossible to choose an exact arrival point on the plane to which you want to travel. From the Material plane it is possible to get anywhere, but you appear between 5 and 500 miles (8 and 800 km) from the desired destination. Plane scrolling transports creatures immediately and then ends. After that, the recipients of the spell must use their own means to carry out the return trip (including recasting the spell).

If Zark was right, [Shifting Between Planes] would allow him to return to his home world.

Nerves and anxiety caused a strong pressure to surge in his chest, and a thought arose in his mind.

Why should he go back?

His parents and grandparents had passed away, he had lost contact with most of his relatives, he had no partner or a love interest, his work at the airport was tedious and boring.

That world didn't mean anything to him ... just maybe the only important thing would be his friends, he could look for them and maybe ...

No ... they had their own lives ... he no longer belonged to that world ...

While Zark thought what he should do, he suddenly remembered the two onlookers looking at him.

The two of them weren't bad people, they were actually nice, they were both strangely familiar in their way of acting.

Looking directly at Nyos, a shadow from the past emerged, overlapping Nyos himself, the image of a Samurai in traditional armor from him emerged.

"Mecso" spoke the name of one of his friends.

And as if he were a mere ghost from the past, the shadow of the avatar of one of his friends had disappeared.

With great regret from within his being, he canceled the activation of the spell, Zark released a heavy sigh… he no longer belonged to earth.

"I'm done" were Zark's words as he approached the two onlookers from him.

"Sir, is something wrong?" the connotation of concern in Frey's voice woke Zark out of his subconscious

"It's nothing" he replied as he passed by them, after a few steps, he remembered something that was missing "Do you still want to duel?"

Nyos and Frey looked at each other, then at Zark.

Frey asked "Was he serious?"

Zark only nodded.

"Ooohhh"

"Ooohhh"

As Frey and Nyos positioned themselves for their duel, a pleasant thought arose in Zark's mind.

"Maybe this world is not so bad"
