Chapter 2: Ome's Journey

Morning finally came and the villagers, whom the town criers announced to, arrived at the palace, to bid the princes goodbye and a success filled trip.

It was about 10:00 in the morning, the princes were already dressed up and were set to go. Then the king and queen came out and bid them goodbye along with the villagers.

Mama! Mrs. Ojo said, calling her mother: the grandmother of Emma and carly.

Yes.... My child, grandma answered.

Mummy! Mummy! Mummy! Emma and carly ran to hug their mum who just came back from the market.

So grandma was telling you a story? Yes mummy, do you mind listening? Carly asked her mum. For sure, Mrs. Ojo replied.

Should I continue my story now? Yes grandma... they all chorused.

Ome, one of the prince, went to a very far community called ozoro, and rented a three-bedroom apartment costing him N200, 000.

One day, he met a boy of his age; musa in the local market, where he wanted to buy clothes, and they started getting along to the extent the boy asked ome what he had come to do in ozoro, after realizing that he was not from there.

Ome, as an honest human being, told him everything that happened. He told him how his father had called him and his brothers to a brief meeting, the night before he travelled to ozoro, how he rented an apartment and the money his father gave him.

One faithful evening, ome went to musa's house, to his greatest surprise, he saw musa smoking cigarette with his other friends. Ome was so dumbfounded that he could not believe himself when musa came up to him and offered him a stick of cigarette, while whispering into his ears; "act like a man".

Ome bluntly refused but later he took it with confusion and began to smoke.

He smoked and coughed until he finished one packet of cigarette and three bottles of beer, then he became drunk and slept off.

The next morning, musa tried to wake ome, until ome woke up.

He told ome to freshen up and take his breakfast that they had a serious business to do.

Ome quickly freshened up and took his breakfast because all he had always wanted to hear was business so that he would make money and progress independently in life and win his father's award.

After ome finished his breakfast, musa took him to a bar and ordered two bottles of beer for him and ome. When they were drinking, musa cut off the unusual silence that arose within them by saying; ome, to tell you the truth, I am a very dangerous guy, I earn my living through armed robbery and I kill anyone who comes in my way and also anyone who knows about my occupation. Therefore, anyone I dispose my criminal act to, must join me because there is a saying which goes like this; "if you can't beat them; join them".

So you are going to join me, because this is where you will get quick money to impress your father and, then you will win the award.

These words left ome dumbfounded for a very long period of time, until other boys came up to them and they all went to musa's house; where the boys usually come to give account of the robbery they carried out daily.

In musa's house, guns, knives, pistols and all kinds of dangerous materials were being displayed.

Hard drugs like marijuana, cocaine, Indian hemp, were also there which they all called; "cool up".

As time rolled by, ome finally joined them in robbery taking all sort of hard drugs.

On one faithful night, ome was sent to rob an old lady's apartment, after knowing she had just withdrawn N1, 000,000 from the bank.

Ome carried a gun and a knife along with him. On arriving at the lady's house, he silently broke the padlock, broke down the door and moved creepily into the sitting room, only to see policemen and women having a discussion. It was already too late for him to escape, so he had to say the keyword:"your money or your life", while pointing his gun towards them.

They caught him while he was trying to escape and made him expose the others.

They forced him to lead them to musa's house, which he did.

They finally arrived at musa's apartment, while the boys were in the house, snuffing cocaine. The policemen told ome to knock at the door which he did. Then musa sent one of his boys to open the door for ome. On arriving at the door, he saw the policemen and tried to escape, but they caught him and the other boys got a signal, and they started shooting which resulted in loss of lives and properties.

Five of musa's boys died including musa, and ome was imprisoned, where he was beaten up by dreaded criminals.

After a fortnight, there came a morning after the sun had fully settled, ome was released from the prison.

Ome was baffled of his release, until he saw his parents whom the news broadcasters announced to.

The king and queen of oteri-iyede, who posted his bail, carried him home.

So children, grandma continued, we have all seen that ome had the quality of honesty only, but did he succeed? No...…. the children echoed.
