Chapter 5: Fated Day III

Fujimi Academy, Staff Room~

{...government has started to do something about this ongoing revolt. However, the politicians are doubting the SDF's ability to...}

The channel was changed into another by Saeko. This time, the tv showed a female reporter.

{The prefecture governor has declared a state of emergency– *Bang!*} The reporter ducked down after hearing gunshots. {That was a gunshot! Just now, the police open fire. But what are they shooting at?!}

The camera then turned towards two bodies on a stretcher standing up suddenly before being shot down by the police.

{Aaahhh!! Waahhh! Stay away!}

Screams were heard as zombies attacked the reporter and the police.

The scene changed back into the main studio.

{It seems there's some problem. F-from now on, we'll be broadcasting from the studio here. As you can tell, the situation outside has become grave. We advise you, please stay in your home unless necessary.}

{Once it's safer outside, we'll bring you information about the ongoing situation.}

The news broadcast ended there. Liam and his companion watched the news on the tv in the staff room, where they currently are in.

"Tch..." Takashi slammed his fist on a table near. "That's all? Why aren't they informing the people of the truth that corpses have started walking? That, people, are eating each other out there!"

"It's because of the government's fear that the people will panic," Saya said, after being reminded by Liam and thinking about it, she has calmed down considerably.

"Even with the current situation?" Rei muttered

"It's precisely because of the current situation that they don't want people to panic," Saya said as he heard Rei's muttering. "If the whole country knew the situation we're in, it would cause Fear. Then it would lead to chaos and anarchy. How would you expect the government to deal with living dead in a time of anarchy?"

The rest of the group got silent after hearing Saya. Then various news from different countries all over the world was shown on television. News of the undead being present in many countries, the possible use of tactical warheads, etc. As Saya explained, there was chaos all around the world and there was even news of looting in some cities.

"....."

"So those zombie-like creatures, no they are zombies, and they are all over the world already."

"But when I was surfing the internet this morning, everything was still fine."

"I can't believe that it only took a few hours before the whole world was engulfed in this chaos." Rei said, "But there must be a safe place out there right? And soon, things will be back to normal."

"Stop dreaming..." Saya sneered.

"Rei-san, what Saya said was right. Don't expect some safe place in the middle of this situation. We can only depend on ourselves to survive and not wait for the government's help to arrive." Liam interrupted before the conversation became heated.

"Senpai..."

"Face reality, don't deny what's happening in front of you. If you keep denying it, you'll die sooner or later by making some kind of mistake." Liam continued, glancing around his companions.

"Then what do you think is this, a pandemic of some kind?" Saya asked her cousin. Of all the people here, he seems the calmest and his intellect is similar to or possibly even greater than her.

"Pandemic? Who knows, we don't have proof of what it is. It could be a pandemic caused by a disease or some other reason that caused it. But what I do know is that those things outside are already dead, a walking dead. I don't care whether it's a pandemic or not, but I care about surviving this sh*tty event." Liam replied decisively. Even though he doesn't know what really caused this apocalypse but his goal hasn't changed, surviving this ordeal.

The others remembered how Liam killed those things outside without batting an eye. This senior of them killed calmly, this caused them to stay silent.

"Ah but you know, since they are walking corpses, maybe their body would start decomposing under the sun and they won't be able to move." Shizuka thought about it and this idea popped into her mind.

"And what's the duration of this process?" Saeko asked curiously.

"Hmm...Well, during summer, it takes around 22 days for some parts of the body to decompose." Shizuka said softly, "But during winter, it can take months..."

"And how do we know they'll even start to decompose?" Saya butted in.

"What do you mean?" Takashi asked

"Don't these things already defy our knowledge of medicine? So why bother relying on it?" Saya coldly replied, "It could be hopeless. Just how long..." her voice trailed off by the end of her statement.

They got silent again, what Saya said was right. Common sense can't be applied to those things outside.

"Whatever the case is, what's important is having a location to make use of after we check our families." Saeko said, "As well as going in groups. We can't survive individually out there."

The rest nodded in agreement.

Liam also smiled, "We should also help survivors whenever we can." he said

"Got it!"

"But how do we escape from the school?"

"The front door is closest to the parking lot."

Liam and the rest nodded, the former then unsheathed his blade. "Let's go!"

Liam got in front and opened the door, there were undead outside. He rushed out and slashed at the nearest one.

*Spurt!*

The head was decapitated, and blood spurted out of the neck. Luckily, Liam backed off but they attracted the attention of the others. Without waiting, Liam dashed and started his killing spree.

Arriving in front of another one, Liam thrust his blade, piercing the head of a zombie. Then he kicked it off, pulling his blade out.

The others followed him closely, Saeko also rushed out and helped Liam kill the undead upfront.

With that two vanguards, the group easily bypassed groups of zombies. Soon, they arrived at the side stairs of the school building.

By this time, the sun is already setting. An orange glow covered the surroundings, it was mesmerizing yet deadly. Zombies are scattered around the school, this was the scene that was in front of the group.

"There are so many zombies here compared to earlier," Takashi muttered

They were on the stairs beside the school building and below them were hundreds of zombies roaming around aimlessly.

Liam also frowned as they can't fight that many zombies, so their earlier tactics are unusable.

"Nii-san, I think they can't see us, but they react to sounds," Saya said softly to Liam.

"Oh?" Liam muttered then thought of an idea. "Let's test that theory out, Saya. You all stay here and I'll go down there to see whether 'they' can see or not." he said

"Wait...that's dangerous, Nii-san." Saya was flustered after hearing Liam's idea. Not only her, the others too especially Saeko.

"Senpai..."

"Liam..."

They said in concern, but Liam smiled in return.

"Don't worry, I can escape if things don't go well. But you must be alert and escape when things become awry." Liam reassured them while ordering the system mentally. 'System, how many Evo points do I have?'

[The host has a total of 7 Evo points.]

'Good, put 6 into agility and 1 into perception.'

[Affirmative! The host's current status is as follows]

[Constitution]

•Strength: 15

•Vitality: 16

•Agility: 20

•Perception: 17

[Evo Points: 0]

After the points were added, Liam felt something warm enveloping his body and then felt something change.

'Good, with this, I should be able to run before being surrounded in case they can see.' Liam thought then waved at his companions. He then slowly walked down the stairs.

'Time to test out their hearing then.' He thought then slowly picked up a used canned soda and threw it away from him.

*Clank!

"Mrnghh" The undead moaned as they turned towards where they can land and followed the noise.

'Well, that checks it out. They do react to sound just like in the series. So no changes happened with my existence being here.' Liam stared at the zombies walking away before signaling his companions to go down.

They nodded and slowly walked down the stairs. A few moments later, they grouped up.

"The bus is about 20 meters away from here. As long as we don't make much noise, we can get there safely." Liam said softly, and the others nodded.

"Marikawa-sensei, you grabbed the key from the staff room, right?" Liam glanced at the clumsy nurse.

"Yes"

Liam nodded, "Good, then let's go..." He said as he started walking towards the bus.

They didn't have to worry about the zombies too much as they were attracted by the can Liam threw. But just then when he and his group were a few meters away from the bus.

*Clankkkk!

A metallic sound resounded, attracting the undead's attention. Liam and the others turned to where the sound came from and saw a group of students coming from where they were earlier.

The sound attracted the attention of the undead, seeing that the undead was closing in, Liam cursed. "Damn it, that sound must've been heard on the whole school. We need to hurry...!" he said

From far away, Liam could already see some undead coming their way. If they stayed for longer, the bus wouldn't get out due to the amount of undead blocking it later.

They run immediately towards the bus. Shizuka took the helm and tried to start the bus.

"Oh, this is different from my car," Shizuka muttered

"Let me!" Liam said and swapped places with Shizuka. He immediately started his without a problem and drove it easily.

"Wait! Help us!" Liam and the others heard a shout and saw some students and a teacher shouting for help. The problem was, they were still far away from the group and the zombies were quickly gathering around.

"Senpai, stop the bus, they need help!" Takashi said

"No! We don't have time for that and besides, look at their distance and zombies are gathering quickly. We can't go get them, otherwise, we'll be stuck here." Liam rejected coldly, "Remember Takashi, the world we know is gone. Now it's survival of the fittest. While I said we would help survivors we came across, that only applies to some people we could help. But their situation has a low chance of survival. We can't go risking our group's safety for such a situation."

Takashi looked outside and saw it just like Liam said. He could only sigh and sit down downtrodden. The others were the same as they watched what was happening outside.

"But who are those?" someone asked

"That's Shido-sensei. He teaches 3-A." Saeko replied

(AN: Shido the asshole...)

Hearing that name, Rei gritted her teeth in anger. Kohta also reacted to the name.

"Shido...he deserves to die," Rei said

"Rei! Just what's happening to you!"

"Rei..." Hisashi muttered, staring at his girlfriend with concern.

Liam calmly drove the bus and run over the school gate. Before completely leaving the school, he glanced at Shido and his group of students coldly.

'Shido...that asshole deserves to die. I surely hope so because if I ever meet him in the future alive and well, I will kill him.' Liam thought. Shido, that name pisses him off for various reasons.

Perhaps it was due to his previous life experiences with assholes that he can't stand the thought of saving one.

.....

On Shido's side, seeing the bus leaving the school, those in his group immediately broke down in despair. They saw how hundreds of zombies were approaching them quickly. And their only hope of survival left them.

"Ah! I don't want to die yet!"

"*Sob* Save me! Anyone, please save me!"

The wails of sorrow, despair, and hopelessness entered Shido's ears. At this time, he was the only person in his group still thinking of escaping.

'I can't die here, I still have many things to accomplish!' He look around but only saw zombies gathering around them. But just then, he saw a tiny gap with the least zombies.

His eyes beamed as he spread his arms while smiling at his group. "Rejoice, everyone! There is hope for us, look there!"

His group stared where he pointed and saw a tiny gap with a few zombies. They also noticed how only about 10 meters away are the zombies around them.

With a tiny bit of hope, their will to survive has increased. Each picked up their weapons and immediately rushed towards the gap. They started bashing the zombies while Shido already escaped through the gap as his group distracted the zombies' attention.

'Your sacrifices will be remembered.' Shido smirked and ran away from there. As he got away, he heard the screams of the students in his group.

If he were to turn his head, he would've seen how they were ultimately surrounded and overwhelmed by the zombies.

It seems like the cockroach he is, Shido has survived the ordeal.
