Chapter 3: Chapter 3

We walked to the back garden where the view took my breath away. Wrapping the stairs were vines of Jasmines. In front of the stairs was an archway with multi-colored Wisteria hanging down. On the right was a pond with fishes of varying colors swimming. On the left was a large swing centered around blooms of every color you can comprehend. There was even a hedge maze. A gazebo that looked like it was made from a multitude of trees that decided to join together. There was a small bridge over the pond that leads to a small cottage that was covered in yet another type of flower I had never seen before, the petals begin with the color yellow and it progresses to orange and finally, the tip is red. It was the most breathtaking assault on the senses. I walked through the archway and headed in the direction of the swing. I sat down as James stood in front of me. "This is the best I could do. I did this from memory. I hope you like it." I looked at him speechlessly, "How did you do this?" He chuckled, "Five years ago you were in that car with your cousins Stacy and Sonia. You were talking about living in a small cottage surrounded by flowers. The car missed its turn. I watched the car turn but the drunk behind you decided to ram his truck. You weren't wearing a safety belt, so you went flying out of the windshield. I had to feed you a lot of my blood before I saw your eyes opened. I watched as your frail body recovered and I thanked myself for deciding to become a vampire" I interrupted him, "You chose to be this? Why? Did someone do something? Is this revenge?" He smiled, "My family has been amongst the humans who fought for the sake of justice. When the witches killed my family, they came to my rescue. I made such an impression on the defenders that they asked me to be a permanent member. I agreed only because the seer told me. My life will begin in another century. I just need to keep myself busy till then. So I chose to be a vampire. The other choice was a Fenris wolf. They are unstable when they get angry and no doubt the stuff of nightmares when that happens. I chose to be this because if I had chosen to be a Fenris wolf I would lose a portion of my free will. They let their alpha decide on everything but who to marry. They always remain in wolf form and rarely change to their human forms. They are part gargoyle so they can sense evil creatures and fend them off to a point." I was a solid marble statue for a minute and a half. I asked him, "When did you acknowledge that you loved me?" He gave me a shy smile. "After the accident, I pretended to be a nurse to see you. You were asleep with a smile on your face. I wanted to know why. So I tried dream dropping. I slipped into your fantasy. I saw this garden where you dreamed of meeting me. I was in my fur coat as always. With my face well hidden, I was supposed to be there by those rose bushes. You came and poured your feelings into me. You said your life felt meaningless until I came into it. You said it was like God gave you the world. I gave color to a life that was just shades of gray. You felt like a blind person seeing the sun for the first time. You just had to be with me. You said your life is incomplete until I was by your side. You proposed to me. The version of me in the dream disappeared. You sat on this swing disappointed when a single blood-red rose fell in your lap. On the thorn was a small note with one word 'Yes'. Your face immediately lit up like a fireworks display." I felt hot in my cheeks as I looked for words to speak. He smiled, "I am going to miss your blushes but these precious moments will be my most priceless memories forever."

There was a loud bang and a curvy woman with long blonde hair came running towards James but he got out of her way and she ended up hugging the tree. William laughed, "The tree hugger is back" She gave William the look of death. She turned to James and her expression changes dramatically. She spoke so sweetly I thought she was made from 95 percent confectioner's sugar. "Darling you didn't tell me that you are here of all places? I would have taken you to London where we could enjoy each other's company." This seems to amuse William more. He fell to the ground laughing. She ignored him as she tried to kiss him this time she kissed her guardian. William started to roll over the ground trying to stop himself from laughing but seemed to fail. She tried again this time she kissed the newspaper James had in his hand. She tried again this time she kissed the wall of the cottage. She tried one last time this time she tripped and fell into the fountain. William laughed so hard I thought he was suffering from hysteria. James chuckled as he scooped me up and walked towards the house. He promised to take me somewhere special tomorrow after William takes me to buy school supplies. I will only be attending for 3 weeks and then I will disappear from human society forever. I just had to get used to being with strangers and that awful serial kisser. She was beautiful while I looked plain. "You are not plain! You are beautiful. She is superficial while you are innocent. You drive me wild. Rose, you are the only one I want." This caused the serial kisser to scream like a banshee. William gave her a wolfish growl and she seems to remember her manners. She walked in the other direction discouraged. I kissed him on the cheek as I wished him good night. William chuckled, "Enjoy these nights. You won't get much sleep after that." I blushed red and this seemed to bring a smile to James's face.

The next morning I made breakfast after I locked all the doors and windows to prevent the freeloader from entering the house. William tried to keep his laughter under control but as Mr. Brown got himself stuck as he tried to get through the only window that has a busted latch, he just burst out laughing. William was eating a huge sausage, a bit of it sprayed over the table. The freeloader was looking pretty awkward half in half out. I reached for the phone and he started his conspiracy theories about the phone. I didn't dial the police but his wife. She is a colorful character. She dresses eccentrically. Last year she only got out if she got to wear a poncho. The year before that her hair looked like it was a beehive. I had no idea what to expect this time. I braced myself as she answered the door. As always she was wearing what looked like an eighties outfit with her hair pointing at the ceiling. She walked into the room to see her spouse sandwiched between two panes of glass and wood. She blinked twice before she slapped him across the face and called the police. Turns out she is a terrible cook. So what he does is he pretends to like her cook then go around the neighborhood harassing others to feed him. He refused to learn how to cook as it was supposed to be a job for women. He saw Sam Barnes getting free food from the neighbors. He suffers from autism so the neighbors like to spoil him very much. Mr. Brown decided that he would get free food but unfortunately, he has only been triumphant only twice.

He gave me angry looks as I explained to her what he has been up to behind her back. He left with an angry expression as his wife promised to keep an eagle eye on him from now on. I skipped to the fridge to get chocolate milk, I heard grandpa and William making bets on how he would dupe his wife before he goes 'hunter gathering' again. Grandpa made it clear that he won't come here because she would check here first before she goes looking for him elsewhere. I looked outdoor and the realization hit me that I would say goodbye to the sunlight soon. I would make the most of it.

I was escorted to an expensive car. I was told it was BMW i8 Coupe and Roadster. He took the top down so I can enjoy this fleeting moment like sand in an hourglass. We stopped at the only bookstore where I was supposed to buy the textbooks and stationery. I smelled that aroused my inner beast's attention. She told me to go and find what it was. But the Jiminy cricket in me warned me that I would regret it so I just bought what I needed and hopped in the car. William smiled at me like I had done something to be proud of. He explained that the blood was to see if I will be Nosferatu or Desperdu. I was shocked, "A what?" William's expression changed from playful youth to serious adult in a heartbeat. "Desperdu means 'lost one'. There are such things as bad vampires. These guys have no conscious just the thirst for blood. These guys are the reason people know of us. The most famous is Dracula." My eyes widen, "You met Dracula? How was he? Is he like what they show in the movies? Is he as calculated as they say he is?" He frowned, "He was a brilliant military mind. We thought he would help us end the war but we gave the darkness a new lieutenant. He couldn't hurt us because James is his sire." I was shocked, "James turned him?" He looked at me with empty eyes and gave me a curt nod to say yes. He kept his eyes on the road. He lost his playful nature as his mind reeled the memories of friends they lost because of the prince of darkness.

The car came to stop and William started to chuckle as he picked up his phone. He dialed Mrs. Brown's number and explained where her husband was. She showed up a few minutes and he was seen sneaking out in the hopes of slipping past his wife. If I was here with Andy she would let him pass but this was William I was with. He hit the horn repeatedly till his wife who was fitter appeared running as fast as the wind could aid her. I can tell he was enjoying himself. In his defense, he was imprisoned by the swamp witch for the past hundred years. He is entitled to have fun.
