Chapter 6: Mama bear

"You're what?!" My mom croaked, her voice a bit scratchy at the end.

At first, I had thought of not informing her about the deal I made with the devil but then decided against it because sooner or later, she will start to ask questions and maybe then, I might not give her the proper answers she needed.

"Mom, it's only a marriage of convenience, nothing else. It's no big deal, people do this a lot either movies or reality. The man is a generous man mom" I cringed at the word, generous. He's anything but generous.

"Darling, you're getting it wrong. Marriage should be about love, nothing else. If your father was here today, I'm sure none of this would have happened. I raised you better than this Ally, you could have said no when he mentioned this sham to you but you didn't. Why Ally?" She asked in a disappointed tone, I couldn't blame my mom because I'm also disappointed in myself. He made me feel cheap, like I can be bought and that's absolutely wrong. If not for the situation at hand, he would have heard an earful from me.

My mother did raise me right, but what could I do? I was stuck on a dejected bridge with no way forward anymore and when Trevor brought the proposal to me, I had thought of declining it but it comes along with comfort and that's just what my mother needed.

"He promised me a lot of money mom, and we are running low on cash. Old Campbell's diner isn't doing good lately resulting to him cutting our pay short. Mom, it's just six months and during that time, you'd get better, trust me that's all that matters. He even promised to take care of your hospital bills but I declined not wanting to feel like some damsel in distress, but he mentioned something about getting you a stay in nurse with his money. I wanted to say no mom but he talked me out of it, I had to agree.

Mom, you are very much aware that I love you more than anything in this world — Hailey doesn't even come close, of course. You're strong, beautiful and brave. For the past few months, you've not had comfort although you do not complain, but I know you don't want to make me feel bad. You're my only family, so tell me, why would I want to lose the only person that means so much to me, all I want from you is for you to get better, the rest can come after then. Look at your skin, it has lost its colour, dad would be so disappointed in me for not taking good care of you. I'm sure he's shaking his head at me, mom, I promise I will never let you down. You don't have to worry about it okay? Let's work on getting your pale cheeks rosy again, will you do that for me?" I asked with a few tears streaming down my face. My mother doesn't deserve this, she's too good and fragile to be bedridden.

"Stop crying my child, I will get better for you. It's okay now, wipe your tears and give me that pretty smile of yours." My mother said, smiling sadly.

I managed to slightly curve my lips into a small smile, I kissed my mother's wrinkly fingers and got up to get her a glass of water.

I cajoled my mother to raise her head a bit and gave her the water to drink. I stopped when she mom started coughing, I eased her back by patting it slowly up and down. After the coughs stopped, I went back to the water dispenser and dropped the cup beside it.

I sat back on my previous sit, smiling warmly at my mother. We made some jokes and laughed about it, we talked more on her health. We shared memories together, laughed at the funny ones and cried at the sad ones, nothing beats family, especially mothers.

The day flew by, earlier, my mother's nurse had walked in on mine and my mother's sleeping forms, the kind nurse shook my body slightly, after she saw that my eyes were almost wide awake — she told me that visiting time was over and I could come again tomorrow with fresh clothes and toiletries.

I didn't even realize that I spent almost four hours at the hospital, after the heartfelt talk I had with my mother, I must have fallen asleep. I stood and stared at her for a couple of seconds, I smiled at her sleeping form and bent forward to kiss her on her forehead. I said a silent goodbye to her even though she couldn't hear me.

I picked up my purse and walked towards the door, I glanced sadly at her one more time and hurriedly walked out of the room.

Seeing my mother in so much pain brought tears to my eyes, even though, she was also hurting, she didn't show it. Also, she might deny it but I clearly saw it underneath her camouflage. I was scared for her and also for myself, she has gone through so much already.

I hailed a cab and went in. After I got home, I went straight to my tiny bedroom and undressed myself. I made my way to the bathroom for a hot shower.

Maybe that would help soothe my nerves.

After the steamy hot shower, I warmed up some leftovers from yesterday. I dished the food and made a mental note to call Hailey.

My phone rang from the counter, I rushed towards it and answered the call without checking the caller.

"Hello" I said in a small voice.

"Hello Alessia" The caller huskily said. That voice. Shit! I didn't check the caller before I picked it up, God save me from this Adonis.

I cleared my throat and spoke, "to what pleasure do I deserve this awesome call at such a wonderful time," I replied sarcastically.

"Don't be sarcastic cara mia, I'm calling to remind you that our cake tasting and the rest is tomorrow" He said, after a gulp. He's obviously drinking.

The wedding wasn't even a real one, he could have picked any cake. It's not like we were going to stay married anyway.

"Since when do you speak italiano and about what you said, is it okay if my friend comes with me?" I asked

"She can come with you cara. My mother is Italian, so it's my second language." He explained calmly. The things his voice does to me.

Boys are distractions Aless.

"Yeah, yeah whatever. I never asked though." I said childishly. I didn't mean to sound that way but that goddamn man just makes me forget my total existence with his voice. I found it hot when he spoke in Italian, the language sure is a love language.

"Whatever you say amore mio. Mother wants to meet you tomorrow, I'll be at your place to pick you up by seven in the morning. Night sposa." He said, his voice husky at the end.

I heard a click sound. That infuriating man just hung up on me, he didn't even ask about my opinion on meeting his mother, neither did he wait for me to return his goodnight back.

Rude much.

I finished my now cold dinner and went to my room for a good night sleep, I could tell tomorrow was going to be a long day.
