Chapter 39: Chapter 39- Sob stories are lame

I have re-read this part of the novel... and it confuses me...

probably cuz I am an idiot...also I am becoming more regular ain't I?

'Shit'

Simon couldn't help but cursed at his luck. The time when Maes entered was the absolute worst.

Maes entering this room and seeing this Riz and assassin was bad. Her coming and seeing the assassin on the ground was worse.

But, Maes entered the room right at the time when Zero had gone a bit harsh on the assassin. She witnessed this guy saying all sorts of curses at Simon while simultaneously screaming.

'I left the door open... Damn it'

The previous night, after Simon went outside, he made sure to not let anybody see him. He maintained absolute stealth.

But he forgot to lock the door to his own room because he was too busy thinking if he should go out or not.

"Uh"

While Simon was thinking, Maes looked at the man on the floor, The man behind Simon, and then at Simon.

She knew that the guy kneeling and cursing at Simon was stronger than her. She also knew that the man behind Simon was probably very strong.

Maes didn't know how strong Simon was but felt like she was the weakest here.

Suddenly something unexpected happened, surprising not just Maes but also Riz.

"huh? Wha-"

The assassin couldn't complete his sentence as he was knocked unconscious mid-air. Zero carried and threw him out of the window.

Simon could see Zero picking him and yeeting him out of the window. But,

For Maes and Riz, The assassin suddenly flew. The window suddenly opened and he was thrown out of the window.

The next thing that happened was, Riz was also thrown out of the window. But Simon didn't knock this guy out.

Also, he probably had a much smoother landing.

'Act cool.'

Simon took a deep breath internally and spoke up. He had the perfect facade of being cold at the moment.

"Is that my meal?"

"...Uh huh, yes"

Maes was still stupefied by what happened just now. No, she didn't even understand what happened. She was just zoning out.

"...Are you just planning on standing there?"

"huh? oh"

Maes realized that she was standing there with Simon's meal. She immediately put the food on the table and apologized for zoning out.

"Don't worry. Thanks for bringing the food."

'Is he... pretending as nothing happened?'

"Ah, then I will excuse myself."

Maes had many questions but she sure wasn't about to raise them. She just wanted to get away from here. Clearly, Maes was even more scared of Simon now.

Of course, the culprit here had no idea about this. He was currently busy thinking of how to end this awkward situation.

"Also, don't bother much about what you saw just now"

No matter how smart Simon was, this was the best line he could make to end this. Clearly, he wasn't good at improv.

Maes quickly left the room, leaving Simon who got up from his chair and looked outside his window.

Simon had a small smirk.

'Looks like he isn't that big of an idiot.'

Simon didn't see anybody in the backyard. Not even the assassin, who had been knocked unconscious while he was being thrown away.

Who had taken that guy away? It was obviously Riz. There was a chance that Riz and the assassin were accomplices, and Riz was acting like an enemy of the assassin to trich Simon.

but Simon didn't think it was that way.

He could clearly see that Riz hated the other guy. Simon didn't want to delve into stuff like this too much so he sat down and began to eat.

At the same time, A mage was running away with all his might while carrying an unconscious guy. After running for about half an hour, he sprinkled some powder on the unconscious guy and threw him in the middle of the jungle.

That day, Some wild animals had a pretty easy source of food. But it wasn't the main point, The mage, Riz didn't look back but kept running until he was out of the forest.

He then went to a nearby town, booked a carriage, and galloped away.

'I hope he lets me go after I dealt with the assassin. God just please don't let us meet again.'

This was Riz's last thought before the carriage moved outside of this territory. Riz sincerely prayed so that he wouldn't come across Simon ever again.

Riz also needed to deal with the people that hired the assassin on him. It seemed like he needed to show some manners to some old farts.

...

Simon looked at the bunch of small islands in front of him. The islands looked like a cluster.

"That island Young Master-nim is the most dangerous one."

The fisherman who was taking them towards the islands was currently explaining which islands are safe and which ones are dangerous.

He pointed at the smallest island among all of them.

"That island has an extremely dangerous whirlpool. You are dead if you get near that thing."

The boat was rocking a bit due to the waves. Simon was fine but... Hilsman seemed like he was about to die.

This guy looked so pitiful that Simon wanted to heal him but... He still couldn't use his powers. The pain from looking at pens didn't exist anymore but Simon couldn't write anything.

'My body is slowly recovering. Probabl-'

Simon's thought was interrupted by the boat that almost tipped over, turning Hilsman paler than a ghost.

Simon grabbed onto his seat tightly and looked out of the window. (Author: Yes, the novel actually has boats with windows and oars together... i wonder how it will look.)

After around half an hour, They reached one of the islands. Simon stepped out and saw the rocky shores. This place didn't have a sandy beach.

The entire shore was rocky.

"Uegh-"

Hilsman began to throw up in the background after suffering heavily from seasickness. Simon moved away a bit and looked at the small forest nearby.

It was pretty small compared to where Simon was s̶l̶e̶e̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ resting last night.

"They say that the thief could walk on water without creating the slightest ripples."

Simon heard the fisherman telling Cale the story about the legendary thief, who happened to be the owner of the Sound of the Wind.

The next ancient power Cale aimed to have. Simon looked around more and didn't find a grain of sand anywhere around the island.

He informed one of the knights that he would take a stroll around. They insisted on going with him but Simon obviously denied.

"Take care of Hilsman."

Simon heard this as the last sentence before he went off into the forest. He needed to do some things there.

...

Cale walked into the forests leisurely. He didn't care much about safety as he had a dragon beside him.

"Is there anybody on this island?"

Cale didn't want to see the forest but the terrain. He would have to fly back here at night to gain the ancient power.

"No, there are only you, the people on the shore, and the shiny human on this island..."

'Shiny human? Simon?'

Cale felt that the black dragon's choice of name was a bit odd. But he didn't question it.

"...along with some corpses."

"What?"

Cale froze at the word corpse. He looked at the dragon that was becoming invisible and frowned.

"There are a total of 3 corpses on the other side of the island. I found them while looking around."

Cale immediately decided to head back to the boat. He felt that staying here more would be unlucky.

"Tell Si-"

"But the corpses aren't humans."

Cale stopped. Corpses but not humans. If they aren't humans then they must have some distinct feature.

"Is there something weird with their body?"

"That's right! They had weird arms and legs. The limbs looked like fins."

'Definitely a mermaid.'

Cale's doubt was gone. It was definitely gone.

"Hey, You go tell Si-"

"I am not 'you'. Don't call me that."

"...Then what should I call you."

"Wait, You will soon find out."

"..."

Cale really wanted to sigh.

"Is there anybody there around the corpses?"

"Yea"

"Who?"

Cale immediately became vigilant. He needed to be cautious if they posed any threats.

"It's the Shiny human."

'Simon? What's he doing there?'

"He is just walking around the rocky shores. He should encounter the corpses in a few minutes. Except for the Shiny human, there is nothing alive there in both land and water."

Cale decided to check the mermaids out. He wanted to make sure he wouldn't get in trouble.

"Lead the way."

After a few minutes, Cale and the black dragon arrived at the corpses. They were actually flying because Cale got tired of walking mid-way.

Well, they arrived at the pretty right time because Simon had also reached the corpses at the same time.

"Huh? What are you guys doing here?"

Simon, who obviously knew what was going on pretended to play dumb.

Cale didn't respond but instead pointed at the corpses of the mermaids. Simon turned around and saw the three corpses lying on the ground.

Cale frowned after seeing the appearance of the mermaids with his own eyes instead of just as text in a novel.

The corpses were completely dry as if they were mummies. However, the mermaids really did look different from humans.

There were fins on their hands and feet, while their skin seemed to be covered in scales. They also had gills instead of ears.

Simon also had the same expression. He backed a bit and asked Cale.

"What... are they? Mermaids?"

"Yes."

Cale didn't speak much and kept staring at the corpses. Simon, who knew what was going in Cale's mind silently went towards Raon.

After a few minutes, Raon broke the silence.

"Why aren't you approaching?"

He looked at Cale, who had been staring at the corpses. Cale turned back and said.

"I am weak."

"Oh Yea, you are a weak human."

The black dragon stepped forward... or flew forward and looked at the corpses.

"They seem to have been flattened to death. They also seem to have died recently."

'Definitely a whale.'

Cale confirmed another of his guesses. He really wished he wasn't this lucky to predict them. He wanted to stay out of trouble as much as possible.

But, Fate seemed to think otherwise. The oblivious Cale sighed and continued remembering the details on the Whales and the mermaids from the novel.

...

Simon looked at the blue-haired and dark blue-eyed guy in front of him. He seemed like he was in his early twenties.

Simon's eyes were slightly lighter than his. Still, Simon was more handsome... no doubt.

"Hmm, So he is a whale."

The blue-haired guy had his eyes closed and seemed in pain.

"No, I can't heal him. The poison affecting him isn't something ordinary. Plus, I can't use my powers right now."

"...Ok."

Cale picked up a knife. He walked towards the unconscious man whose eyes were twitching. He must be awake.

"Weak Human, Put the knife away. He is awake."

'What's with that nickname?'

Cale wanted to say something about the nickname but kept quiet after remembering that he was the weakest person in this room.

As for the knife, Cale didn't listen to that part.

Stab.

The knife stabbed into the mermaid's arm and cut through the skin. Fluid started to pour out of the cut arm. It was the mermaid's blood. Once the arm returned to normal, the blood was restored as well.

Cale started to speak to the still-shaking man.

"Good."

The blood poured out and fell onto the man's leg.

Sizzle.

The green fluid on the man's leg started to sizzle once it came into contact with the mermaid blood.

Cale handed the bleeding arm to the man.

"Drink it before the blood dries up. That is the best way."

The man looked at Cale. He quickly did what Cale said. The blood actually healed him.

"Don't be surprised. Weren't you the Whale that killed those mermaids?"

The dark blue eyes of the said Whale shook as he looked at Cale with a very confused look.

"How... do you know I am a whale?"

"Who do you think can kill three mermaids?"

"..."

"Since you are a Whale, Rest here for a while then go back to the sea. It will completely heal you."

'Only a half-whale'

The Whale, no the half-blooded Whale's eyes shook as memories of his past. He opened his mouth

"I wa-"

"I don't want to hear your past."

'Me too'

Simon also chimed in but only in his mind.

Leaving Simon, Cale honestly didn't want to hear it. If you asked him to phrase it,

'Sob stories are troublesome.'

would be Cale's answer.

'Sob stories are lame.'

would be Simon's answer.

Clearly, both of them weren't interested in hearing other people's past. For obviously different reasons but the sentiment was the same.
