Chapter 18: The opening of the rift

The walls shook and swung, the vibration making walking almost impossible but somehow Kaito managed to escape into the outside corridor only to realise that he would likely not be able to escape from the maze himself.

The shaking was not subduing at all which was causing him a lot of problems but nothing seemed to actually fall down from its place and break, almost like Keito was the only one who could feel this shaking.

'Should get to Noah first' the first thought inside his mind had been the fox who was nowhere to be seen.

'In the connected room. Can smell him there' his wolf's nose was much more potent than his due to its animal nature and Keito followed his directions. Since their rooms were connected, it was only a matter of time before he reached the connecting door.

He steadied himself on the sidewall and knocked on the door which seemed to be moving.

The vibrations had not stopped even for a second which indicated to him that the earthquake was not natural in any way.

The door was not locked and opened as soon as he exerted even a little of his force to open it. As felt his body tilt with the open door, his balance was shaking now that he had lost one of his supports.

And then his body landed on something soft and warm, a painful yelp reaching his ears in time with his fall.

'Stay like this' his wolf seemed to find their position a little too comfortable and he looked up to see just what was that comfortable. His hands touched around the soft fluffy surface of wherever he was landed on.

It was warm and his hand sank into the fluff almost immediately. When he turned his face toward it, all he could see was an expense of white.

He squeezed it and another yelp reached his ear, this time a little higher in pitch than the last. He wanted to squeeze it again and rub it against his face but before his other hand could join, the fluffy white thing moved.

'Nooooo' the wolf cried and Kaito was sure he would not refrain from stopping the squeak that left his mouth, his body wiggling to get comfortable, only to get another yelp and a cry for his efforts.

He finally looked up, only to find the fox looking at him with wide and frightening eyes, the pupils almost a slit.

Kaito gulped as he once again looked at the shite appendage that was out in the open, the fox ears on that white head twitching in displeasure and he felt himself gulp.

He had gone too far this time, hadn't he? How would he be able to explain himself to the others now?

"Did something happen?" The fox's voice was still high pitched, but it had a certain concern in it now, the wide eyes going back to their normal size.

Kaito watched it in a slight daze, the form of the fox still vibrating like everything else but it was much less prominent now that he was near the ground.

The shaking seemed much less prominent and volatile than before.

"Everything is shaking badly and I think it's all in my head," Kaito replied, his voice almost a slur and his hands still trying to get a grip on anything that could stabilise him. Many times it rested on the omega who looked a little flushed at the attention but did not stop him.

Kaito stopped himself, his mind reminding himself that the other was most likely getting uncomfortable with this situation.

"Ah, I was not aware that it would happen to you since you don't have any magic of your own yet. But it seems like my magic bonded to you a little too strongly. Don't worry, it'll be over in a few seconds" only half of it registered in Kaito's mind while the other half was busy looking at the omega.

There was a warm feeling inside him which caused his head to become clearer and when he came about he saw his hands held onto by the omega's own small ones and he stared at the view it made.

"I'm alright now" Kito called out to the other once he felt his head clear out enough to allow him to concentrate and blinked twice to clear his eyesight.

He did not want to let the other's hand go from his grip but it was an inevitable separation and one he mourned as soon as he let go.

The flush the omega had supported before had faded by now, the soft eyes now sharp with an intent which he found that he liked.

'Omega can get festy, I like it. Nights would be fun' he almost choked at the thought his wolf was put inside his head and found himself really wanting to strangle it. Why did his wolf have to be like this with Noah and not anyone else?

Had he really imprinted on Noah? He really could not believe it.

"The rift valley most likely already opened up. I can see the barrier going up right as we speak and we need to hurry before it completely goes up or we'll be locked out" Noah's voice was serious and Kaito could do nothing but nod in agreement.

"Let's go then" Kaito turned to move out but seeing that the other had not moved even an inch, he stopped and turned toward him, his face twisted in confusion as he asked, "let's go?"

"You need to pack a few necessities. We'll likely not leave the mountain for a week, so packing clothes and other necessities is a must. I'll make a trip to the kitchen while you pack. We have close to two hours before we have to leave" Kaito flushed at his own eagerness.

The other had said that the rift would be opened for about a week but he had not taken it into account and it showed in his gestures and actions.

He got to pack important things just as the omega left to pack other necessities for their travel once he had his human disguise back on. It gave him enough time to come to terms with what had transpired before the omega had left and he really did feel guilty now.

The other had obviously been in discomfort at his actions and wanted to get away only to realise that Kaito would not allow him to get away that easily. It had been visible on that lovely face even if the scent had not given away anything.

'Your fault our omega ran away' his wolf grumbled inside his head and he groaned at the obvious blame that layered that voice. It had not been his intention at all, it had just happened so why was he being blamed at all?

'And he's not our omega' he ignored that 'not yet' his wolf sprouted inside his head, his focus far too centred on making his luggage as light and durable as possible.

He had lived far too long as a young master and it showed in his choices. Nothing seemed too durable and long term use which was a headache all on its own. He was not sure how he would manage to pack his things.

But by the time the omega was back, he had somehow managed to squeeze everything inside a small bag that seemed to be able to hold on through the journey with ease. The omega gave him an approving nod as he took in his carriage and then they both left the place.

The mountain path was rocky and not mainatined, the rocks sharp and biting into his shoes' sole. Thankfully, the advantage to buying prickly shoes was that the sole held on even after that onslaught and his feet did not hurt at all.

He was not sure if the omega could feel the biting rocks with his thin feet or if there was a magic trick that prevented it since there seemed to be no bloody footsteps in front of him. But it did make him want to scoop the other and carry him over toward their destination.

The only thing that stopped him was the knowledge that it would not be appreciated by the other at all and he did not want to upset the other anymore today than he already had.

The omega soon stopped walking which caused Kaito to take a break in his steps too. The omega had a thoughtful look on his face as he looked at the empty right in front of him and then extended his hand toward that space.

It stopped as if something was obstructing it and the omega turned toward him.

Blue met gold for the very moment and everything seemed to stop, even the very time froze. Then slowly, a hand extended toward Kaito and he looked on in breathless mesmerisation as the fox shed his human form, the magnificent tails and ear making their appearance in their full glory.

There was a magical light in those blue eyes that beckoned him forward and he took that extended hand without hesitation.
