Chapter 7: Chapter 7- Amir

It was indeed Amir’s unlucky day. He was assigned to the meeting hall in the depths of the council as the king’s advisors and court fought their way for more power. He had to stand there, and make sure nothing happened. As if something ever did happen. The people close to the king never really engaged in violence; their best weapon was their strategies. And strategies were not things which could be stopped by neither Amir’s nor anyone else’s sword. He supposed king Edward also knew that and had assigned guards to the meeting anyways.

Did that mean something was to happen?

As Amir stayed in the halls waiting for the council members to arrive, he noticed a few strange things. A small number of the members had also brought one or two guards of their own. It was as if almost everyone was expecting something. The only people who came unarmed, were Lady Serrina and Prince Azriel, which of course were accompanied by Logan Seltar who was a weapon in his own means.

Once everyone was in, him and the other guards who were wearing their helmet entered the meeting room. Servants closed the doors as the guards – Amir included – stood in their positions in the corners of the place. For a couple of minutes, they all waited in silence for the king to arrive. When he did, council members bowed while Amir and his rank kneeled. “You can stand” the king stated without looking at his direction.

Amir could already feel the tension creeping its way into his heart. Could it be that Black and Dormer would accuse each other again? Maybe the king had also brought in guards for that particular reason, to avoid a fight if it broke out.

But moments passed faster than he had anticipated; and as Amir stood in the meeting, listening to the nonsense that the lords babbled to each other he found himself somewhat less tense. It was probably around half a bell that the meeting had started, and nothing had happened. Had he been worried over a trivial matter?

From across the room, he saw Lady Serrina and captain Seltar whisper about something and then directly look at his direction. He drew his attention elsewhere. Of course it was not odd for him to be looking around studying everyone, it was after all his duty to be careful of his surroundings. But he was supposed to be invisible; he was supposed to be the one looking, not the one to be looked at.

Had he made a foolish move by taking his eyes off them when they looked at him? Maybe he had, but it certainly did not matter now. He once again examined the meeting, there was still tension among them. One that had become normal to a point of not bothering him anymore, but for once in his life Amir was paying attention to the details. He could not help but notice the way general Dormer’s personal guards had a tight grip on their swords or how Serrina kept staring and trying to read the room. He could also see the way some council members of lower rank like Lord Warner stuttered at times when speaking.

Everyone could feel the tension, but they kept ignoring it, Amir was seeing it and it made him wonder if he were not a royal guard but a lord, would he also ignore the situation?

As Amir was focused on the movement of the men in his company, once again he found Logan Seltar looking at his way, smiling. He’d been acting strange lately, since the day he’d last asked him to join the royal guard’s gathering to be specific. Amir had thought he’d been invited personally only to make sure he got closer with the rest of the guards. Recently, he’d started to wonder if there was more to it than he knew.

“I believe we need more soldiers in the borders. Danion seems to be moving its forces. More arrive every day and some of my men have been ambushed by villagers.” Said general Dormer. His words were immediately met by silence and then a few arguments regarding the cost of recruiting or sending more forces. “Danion would never attack us.” Prince Azriel stated, of course he would. Many nodded their head in agreement, after all the queen was of Dan origin and the crown prince was also half Dan.

“But my soldiers were ambushed. Regardless of your relationship with them.” Argued Dormer, “my prince.” He added right after. That cost him a side glance from Lady Serrina and a glare from Lord Black. Amir could not help thinking that the three were quite similar despite their sour relationship.

“General Dormer, why are you so sure that there will be an attack from Danion while they have declared peace with us through marriage? Could it be that you want those men for other reasons?” every head turned to Lord Black, and Amir’s eyes widened at his claim. His right hand unintentionally rested at his sword just in case Dormer’s men made a move. To his surprise, they never did.

Amir was confused why the king was not stopping Lord Black, and he saw that Black’s daughter was about to start talking when Dormer broke into a laugh. “My, my Alexander. You never cease to amaze me.” He said. “of course, I do not harbor any intentions other than my country’s wellbeing. You of all people should know that.” Lord Black’s eyebrows rose, but he only crossed his arms in response. And just like that the argument ended.

Why was this meeting going downside and uphill at the same time? And most important, why was the king allowing it?

From the corner of his eyes Amir spotted the king who sat on his throne, unaffected and unimpressed by the slight accusation his righthand had made about his General. Was this sort of topic so normal for them that no one really paid it any attention? Or were they not as bright as everyone thought they were? There was no way none had gotten Black’s message. He had accused Dormer of treason, however childish his words had been, they were still claims of treason. Amir was quite confused that this meeting had turned out this way.

What in the world was wrong with these people…?
