Chapter 67: Commission Board

With a strong purpose in his step, Eidiri parted the branches before him, his hand deftly holding Saxum Gladius.

Chopping the vines in front of him, the greenery fell to the ground into a heap beneath his feet.

The twigs and leaves crunched underneath Eidiri's feet, despite him trying to stay silent.

Parting the leaves in front of him with his hand, 2 eyes peeked out from the undergrowth observing the sight before him.

Kobolds busied themselves around Eidiri, some of them roasting meat, 7 guards posted around the small clearing.

Some female kobolds were washing dirty rags in murky water.

Some kobold younglings were running around, chasing each other in an eager game of what Eidiri assumed to be Tag.

Layers of guilt begin to rise, giving birth to a horrid taste in Eidiri's mouth.

These kobolds were just living their life, trying to get by.

But while there was this horrid taste in Eidiri's mouth, and the small amount of sweat dripping down his back, Eidiri knew that it was either them or him.

The kobolds wouldn't hesitate to tear into him, therefore it wouldn't be a good idea to just spare them.

However, knowing this, and actually doing it, were 2 completely different things.

His mind acknowledged that sometimes principles had to be adjusted.

But his body refused to move, the sour taste spreading even further within his mouth.

Frozen still, Eidiri didn't budge, a mental war occurring in his mind.

'The spirit said not to lose sight of my principles. I can't just kill these kobolds. They're pretty much just like us! They have their own societies, their own communities. And while they aren't developed as us, what gives us the right to give them as we please?'

'But they wouldn't hesitate to kill us! They have no qualms with spilling our blood! Just look at what happened when we started!'

'But they were just defending their territory. If you think about it, we were the ones who actually were invading them, we're the aggressor here.'

''What are you hesitating for dude? The kobolds are just going to spread like an infestation if they're not cut down. Even if we do spare them, someone's eventually going to come around and cut them down.'

In the end, Eidiri still refused to step forward into the clearing. His feelings towards the Kobolds still existed, but now it had somewhat simmered down, leaving nothing but an 'If you attack me then I shall reply in kind' sort of mindset.

Abandoned were the thoughts of revenge due to the humiliation when he had first set out into this world.

After coming to this realization, he posted his thoughts to his blog.

Almost instantly, Eidiri was hit with great backlash, some people saying that he was getting 'too involved in the game', others saying that he shouldn't take this so seriously.

But no matter how many comments like those Eidiri read, the feeling of satisfaction never faded.

The characters were just too life-like. Almost freakishly so.

Even if Eidiri realistically knew that this was just a game and that there was no physical way for these characters to be real, it still felt wrong.

Hell, it felt wrong to kill anything, unless such killing was essential to survival.

So Eidiri's moral compass won the battle, turning away from the kobolds, electing to find a beast to go slay rather than a sentient species.

Just like how Eidiri had arrived, he left the scene just as quickly.

Slightly disappointed at how he had been unable to find anything suitable to test his heightened magical abilities on, Eidiri decided to head to the community board within the village.

'Who knows? Perhaps someone made a request I can use to test this thing already,' Eidiri thought.

The community board was placed in the village square, directly next to the small little fountain that the Baron Von Dumain had specially ordered to be constructed here.

The village square was a bustling center of activity, adventurers pushing through the crowd to nab some of the papers from the board.

As a matter of fact, the number of papers on the board was overflowing, spilling out in such a fashion that they were stacked off to the side.

Grabbing a random piece of paper from the floor Eidiri read the request, "Please collect some Sparkling-Medium Tier Magical Transparent Dewgrass - The Alchemy Institution."

After glancing over it Eidiri tossed this commission off to the side, he didn't have the necessary skill to harvest such a high-level material without damaging the product.

Leafing through a couple more commissions wasn't fruitful, each of them being outside of Eidiri's pay grade.

Furthermore, those commissions he found that were suitable for him, just generally provoked zero interest within him at all.

From things to mining ore, to plucking herbs, what Eidiri wanted to do was fight some monsters, be a person of justice. and all that.

After tossing aside a couple more papers, Eidiri finally stumbled on a commission that caught his interest.

'Requesting for someone to deal with the oncoming monster horde bearing down upon Kugo Village.

Scouts have reported this Monster Horde to only contain Monsters of the lowest level.

Any help at all would be appreciated.

Compensation for your services will depend on the amount and quality of monsters slain by your blade,' the request read.

Grabbing this commission from the board, Eidiri asked one of the adventurers around him, "Hey do you happen to know what direction Kugo Village is?" he asked.

"You heading to Kugo? It's best not to, they're infamous to fib a little on the difficulty of the task they commission to save on the fees," the adventurer advised.

"It's no matter, do you happen to know where Kugo Village is?" Eidiri repeated.

"If you're sure about this kid. Just leave through the village gate and follow the road. Then when you arrive at the crossroads, take the right path, eventually, you'll hit Kugo Village, that clear?" the adventurer helpfully answered.

"Yep, that you very much," Eidiri said, already following the directions he had received.
