Chapter 2: Chapter 1

Human savage, From the very first moment that our species emerged from the oceans of this great planet and set foot on the shores, we have been savage. Of course, evolution has been kind to the Homo sapien; we have long developed a level of intelligence that far surpasses the rest of the animal kingdom.

Our intelligence allows us to act in such a way that makes us feel like something other than the animals we are. We can act with kindness. We can be caring. But, if we examine ourselves carefully - perhaps even to a microscopic level - we will, no doubt, find that we are, in fact, still just as savage as our most ancient of ancestors.

We killed mammoths so that we might steal their hides. We farm cattle for their meat. We will kill - and have forever killed - anything that stands in the way of our goals; both as individuals and as a species. If we find that our crops have been decimated by mice, we lay poisoned traps to kill them. If we find that our homes have become infested with woodworm, they are swiftly eradicated.

Throughout history, human beings have also seemingly had a fondness for killing each other. The Aztecs sacrificed humans, cutting out their hearts to appease their Gods.

Adolf Hitler ordered the execution of millions upon millions of Jews. This, there can be no denial, is true savagery. But one man killing another is nothing new.

Evidence suggests that even the earliest Homo sapiens - those who walked this Earth perhaps fifty-thousand years ago - would hunt and kill members of their species. Those who were killed were almost certainly then eaten.

I believe that anthropophagy (better known by the layperson as cannibalism), despite the way most civilised human beings feel when discussing such a matter, still takes place today.

We often forget (or perhaps many of us are simply ignorant to the fact) that millions of people still live, hidden away, deep in our rainforests, their lives governed not by the materialistic things that we all take for granted, but by a far more ancient and archaic belief system, where cannibalism would be a daily practise, rather than taboo.

Of course, there is little evidence to prove this theory, what with these people living in such secrecy and isolation. it seems incredibly likely that cannibalism is still practised in certain communities across the globe.

This planet is minuscule, about the universe. Every man, woman and child who walks the planet is truly our neighbour. You can rest assured, cannibals, walk amongst us. This is the savage truth. And it should come as no surprise; we are savage.

We consider ourselves to be top of the food chain. It is only our intelligence that puts us in this position. But then, it is the way we use our intelligence that is most distressing. We still kill other human beings with impunity.

Wars have raged on our planet for millennia. Billions of human lives have been lost in the pursuit of what one man feels is right when others do not agree.

These wars continue to be a blight on the legacy of our species, throughout history, right up to this very day. As wars continue to rage – as one human being continues to murder another human being – we cannot deny that, as is so true, the human race is savage
