Chapter 5: Summoning Class (2)

Seth's shout caught everyone's attention. "Hell yeah!" He exclaimed as a large wolf stood there, wagging his tail at him.

"Whoa!" Another student exclaimed in panic. "It's a fricking wolf! A whole wolf!"

"It would have been weird if he summoned only a part of a wolf…" Erika mumbled as she watched the wolf sniffing around with furrowed brows. "Oh well," She glanced at Aether once more. The butterfly he'd summoned was flying around him with grace.

His smile was contagious, Erika couldn't help but smile. Her smile turned into a chuckle as she noticed how similar Aether and his summons colour schemes were.

Black, with a hint of blue.

Aether noticed her gaze. His smile faded a little. He quickly shot a glance around, especially towards Iris, and then smiled again as he noticed she was rather busy being praised. "Why are you staring at me?" He asked, curious.

Erika shrugged. "You're way too happy for summoning a butterfly."

Aether shrugged. He didn't need a wolf, a phoenix or anything else. "What's wrong with butterflies?" He asked, then gestured towards Erika's magic circle. "Are you not going to try as well?"

She smirked. "I was just about to, but then I saw a guy smiling and watching his summon. It was a bit distracting, to be honest."

Aether shook his head. "Oh, come on," He raised his hand, and his butterfly handed on his finger. "You're exaggerating."

Erika chuckled. "Eh, whatever." She placed her hands on the sides of the circle, then poured her mana into it. A white light shone before her summon was revealed.

"A fox?" Aether asked as he watched the twin tailed white, arctic fox sniffed Erika's trousers. The red haired girl chuckled. "Aw," She said as she knelt by the fox and let it climb on her lap. "It's fluffy."

Aether laughed, then turned his attention on the rest of the class. Almost everyone had summoned their creatures. They would soon fade into nothingness, but for now, everyone was enjoying their time with their summons.

It took about five minutes before the summons began to disappear. Iris' was the first to disappear. The beautiful girl panicked as her phoenix suddenly caught fire, and Professor Cross had to calm her down to explain what was happening.

Then, the wolf and the cat disappeared. The twin tailed fox survived perhaps half a minute longer. Aether didn't watch the others too much, his gaze was fixed on the butterfly. It flew up in the air before finally disappearing, a few minutes after the others.

"You can summon them again." Professor Cross said with a faint smile. "Now, you should know – they don't have a consciousness of their own. They are an extension of yours. So, their 'death', is just their physical forms scattering." She smiled. "So, you don't need to worry about them suffering."

Erika pondered for a moment, then spoke up. "If they're basically an extension of ourselves, then how are their forms decided? Why did Iris get a phoenix while Mara only got a cat?"

Aether raised his eyebrows. He hadn't thought of Erika as an academically inquisitive person, but now he could see hoe mistaken he was.

"Good question, Erika. Any guesses?" Professor Cross glanced around the class. "None?"

Seth raised his arm. "They took the form we wanted them to?" He asked after a moment of hesitation.

"No," Professor Cross glanced around once more. "Anyone else? Aether?"

Aether sighed. "They took the form we felt most close to. Iris' was a phoenix because that's what she feels closest to – a powerful and influential person. Seth believes in his physical strength as much as he believes in his magic, so of course his summon was a wolf. Mara is skittish and shy, so a small cat." He shrugged. "Am I right?"

Professor Cross froze for a split second before clapping. "You are spot on, Aether!" Despite her enthusiastic voice and relaxed posture, Aether couldn't help but feel somewhat on edge. Had he let on too much? But this was important. Summons showed the form of one's soul. That was dangerous information that could easily be used against a careless person.

"Wait, so why was yours a butterfly?" Erika asked as people began debating whether their summon fitted their personality. "What does that symbolise?"

Aether shrugged. "That I like solitude?" He glanced at Erika's red hair. "What about your fox? What side of you is that?"

Erika lightly punched his shoulder. "That is for you to find out." She winked at him before heading over to Mara, who was standing alone towards the back of the crowd. "Hey there, I'm Erika, the class president!" Aether heard her introduction.

"Very sly of you." Iris' voice sounded in his ears. She brushed past him, also heading towards Erika. "Never use me as an example ever again." She hissed in his ear, then pushed him aside.

The young man's expression soured. He didn't bother replying, instead, he glanced at the stat bracelet.

<Level up!>

<You have gained 1 AP (Academic Point)>

<You have successfully summoned a creature: Reward: 1 AP>

Aether's expression turned into one of confusion. "What the hell is all this?" He mumbled.

He tapped on the panel, hoping for an explanation.

<Aether Yotsura>

<Level: 2>

<Mana: 1000/1000>

<Spells: Light>

<Rituals: Basic Summoning>

<AP:2>

<Other: Unable to Detect>

"At least one of you was smart enough to check your stat bracelet." Professor Cross' loud voice startled the class. Everyone scrambled to look at their stats, them murmurs sounded as they tried to figure out what was going on.

"You'll see two new entries: Academic Points and Rituals. Rituals are just spells that need magic circles. Academic Points, on the other hand, are what give the sharp and successful students and edge over the lazy and careless." Her explanation was nowhere near enough. And Erika promptly let her know of that fact.

"What can we get with these Academic Points?"

Professor Cross grinned. "A range of different items and perks. You can get rare materials, access to restricted areas of the library, even special lessons from some of the more prominent figures in the magic scene." Her expression changed into something more serious. "Though, remember – any misconduct such as breaking the rules or putting others or yourselves in danger can and will cause you to lose varying amounts of AP."

She started explaining the rules while Aether checked his stat bracelet once more. 2 AP. He wondered how much he would need to get access to the restricted areas of the library.

Would it truly be so easy to gain that information he so very much wanted?
