Chapter 9: Haunting the Streets!

"Yes, yes sir. The investigators are searching for proof. Yes, sir, I'll report immediately if they find anything about you." An officer was present in the alleyway near the house of the deceased officer the NCPD(National City Police Department) was investigating.

After cutting the call, the man sighed in relief and swiped the sweat on his forehead. Talking to the boss was quite nerve-wracking for him. "That scary, huh?" A voice came behind him.

"You have no ide-" He replied but paused mid-sentence because he was sure there was no one near him when he made the call. He quickly turned around, pulling his gun, but the one who spoke was faster as he got kicked in the chest and he went flying, colliding with a garbage bin on the opposite side.

"Oh, I'm quite familiar with fear. And I'll make you're as well," The man heard as he saw a black demonic being staring into his soul, much like the one the four men arrested were screaming about. And he now understood exactly why they were crying like scared bitches, because he was feeling fear erupt within him.

The being touched the man and kept looking into his eyes, as the man tried screaming in pain he was feeling in his head. He felt hundreds of needles poke his brain and also illusions of getting cooked in an oil cauldron or getting tortured by the people he killed on pay from his boss.

The man kept screaming due to pain, yet no one outside of the alley could hear him. Ben stared at the man with cold eyes and turned away, as his work was done. He turned invisible and leaped, crossing the four floors to the roof, and continued on his way.

Since Ben went away, the silencing ward on the alley lifted as the nearby cops heard the screaming. They rushed towards the alley as the screams had also stopped by now. But they only found a fainted cop with a fearful expression on his face, while a burner phone lied away from him. The cops were alarmed and immediately called for backup while securing the location and checking on the officer who was trembling from time to time.

[Sir, I don't you think you went a bit too far?] Ben heard Friday ask him

"... maybe," Ben said but shrugged it off. Though he did consider stopping the whole mind torture for now. As if kept doing this, not only the cops but in the long run, Justice League will decide to go after him for lobotomizing people. And though he did this to the 4 guys initially because of anger, the officer did things for money to settle down later, and there were way worse people than him. Plus, now he thinks about it, he feels disgusted that he did that.

Sighing, Ben asked, " You got something from the frequency?"

[Yes, the location of the recipient of the caller is around the southwest block] Friday answered him. Ben was able to analyze the frequency the burner phone was using himself and asked Friday, who gave him directions to go.

Ben decreased the effect of gravity on him and rushed to the location, staying in the shadows as staying invisible also costs mana. He noted to create a camouflage option when he develops his suit.

Ben made his way to a nearby building and used aura sense to locate the men in the apartment complex near him. He sensed many in the building, but except a few, the rest were civilians. Because the drug dealers were in a basement of sorts, which seemed to be accessible from the bottom of the elevator's path.

Ben used the window's pane below him and entered it, only to emerge from the inside of one of the widows of the target building. Another technique of mirror magic, traveling through mirrors. Though the distance extends only a few miles now, Ben was training to enhance one of the fundamental powers of the Anodite race, mana generation, to help with his problem of running out of mana, as he didn't achieve an Anodite form at the present.

Ben quickly knocked out the two men in that apartment as they were keeping an eye out for suspicious movement outside. He did a quick scan of required memories, another perk he discovered from the eye of truth. Ben could use a mental attack using it as a focus, like legilimens from Harry Potter, and also make it filter out the things irrelevant to him, like a filter. It was much better than using telepathy as it had him go through the entire person's life. And Ben wasn't one of those who had an 'indomitable will', as he may just kill the person if he gets too angry seeing things he didn't like. And in the universe where killing is highly looked down on, Ben wanted to avoid it... for now.

Getting details of the boss, the layout of the basements, and the shifts of these gangsters, Ben turned invisible and intangible, falling through the floors and directly to the basement. Stopping himself from colliding from the floor with telekinesis, which was easy as he was almost weightless while being intangible. Ben's intangibility ran out and he landed on the floor, only to leap again and stick to the roof like a certain spider hero.

Ben found it easy to perform as he just had to redirect his bio-electricity to generate an attraction or repulsion force whenever he wanted, and he had more than enough strength to stick like that. He crawled through the compound, taking pictures from his visitor, which was modified ski goggles, added with various scanners like infra-red or identity scanner, as well as a display. Ben had used a map displayed by Friday to reach this place, and Friday had also mapped this building from the data Ben's aura search and the man above provided.

Ben was able to make his way where the head honcho was and scanned the room, to find a safe. but the safe was a decoy as well since the wall above the safe had an opening that seemed to contain something. Not only that, there was a loose area at the edge where he found something stuck.

Ben just phased through and quickly stored the stuff in the safe and the documents in his inventory and did a quick read. The documents contained the location of various areas in National City and a few other things like suspected hideout details of rival gangs as well as various court sheets of cases, which he had no idea why it was kept here, but he had time to analyze the stuff.

Next, Ben moved towards the crevice in the edge to find a pen drive stuck in there. He inserted it in an opening in his belt to let Friday scan it, and looked towards the man sitting while playing games at his PC. Ben put wards on the room to make it soundproof and make people avoid it for now, then stood behind the man at some distance to begin the horror show, just fewer mind shenanigans, and more punching.

The man in question was playing... a questionable game with a drooly smile on his face. Ben felt that this is just the start for him to see disgusting situations like these, but sighed to get on with his plan. The man was watching as a female character talked on the screen, only for the screen to glitch a few times. He frowned and checked the computer cable, to find it attached perfectly.

He looked back at the screen and saw something that started creeping him out a little, the character who was supposed to be shifting images turned her face towards him like a 3-D character. And he was sure she was actually looking at him. Somehow.

"My, my, aren't you a little bad boy." He heard her 'speak' through the speakers. He became more startled, as the character started moving towards the screen, and it showed the screen slowly darkening and her eyes glowing red. " Good for you, I'm into bad boys." She said with a creepy smile, as she started turning black as well.

Scared shitless, he turned off the monitor's power and took out the cables connected, only to find the monitor still on. The girl was now pitch black with red glowing eyes and razor-sharp teeth, and her huge smile was the most terrifying thing about her." Why are you scared? Weren't you thinking about me?" She said as she 'reached' the monitor, "And now WE.CAN.BE.TOGETHER.FOREVER" She said, coming out of the monitor, as her hair extended to wrap around and lift him. He then saw her open her mouth, which became very big, with teeth lined in rows behind the front pair, continuing to the end of the mouth which he couldn't see. He screamed to no avail, as he got swallowed whole.

In reality, Ben just put him into an illusion and he had a weird face right now. The illusion was supposed to depend on the fears of the person in question, and Ben definitely didn't expect... what he saw happen in the illusion. His plan of scaring him shitless to bark in front of the NCPD turned into something else, and Ben sighed, regretting to have gotten distracted from the reason he came here.

Shaking his head, he looked back to the computer which he and Friday had hacked by now and copied all details. Ben then copied the information the man knew and left a mark on him. This will occasionally make him remember all his deeds and induce pain similar to getting ground by the teeth-tunnel the man saw.

Ben did frown at an important detail. The man did hunt the undercover officer and kill him, but the proof wasn't supposed to be on him. Because he himself was just a henchman. A high-level one, but still just a henchman. One responsible for supplying drugs into various dark party halls and bars in this part of the city.

But Ben did get the name of other high-level gangsters of this gang, as well as their boss, Johnny Reb. Ben kept the info to himself and started creating an illusion of being a shadowy figure. He had what he needed to continue the search, but for now, it was time to knock them out and send them packing.

Ben rushed through the whole base swiftly and dispatched everyone with relative ease. Then again, they were too scared to do anything. After that, he went to the upper floors to knock out the remaining sentries as well and used the phone of one of them to call the police.

"Hello, this is the NCPD." The other side said.

Ben made his voice sound like and girl and screamed "Help, they have guns, and- and they have locked me in this basement. Please hel-" Ben said and cut the phone. He used the mirror near him to toss it and the phone appeared on the desk from the man's computer screen. Satisfied, Ben left a bug for Friday to keep an eye around and left.

After that, while jumping from roof to roof, Ben sensed some emotional fluctuations in the slightly darker parts of the city and rushed towards it. Since it was mandatory to take out a few street thugs to establish an image, why not?

Hence, it became the first night about various crimes being stopped around the city, with the victims telling of something made of shadows saving them, while the criminals were scared pale as if they had seen a ghost!
