Chapter 11: CHAPTER ELEVEN
A smile was growing on Kevin's face without him knowing it as he absent mindedly put his things together. He had been thinking of his new office, he had been creating a mental picture of how he hoped things would go in the new environment and the thoughts of him being around H.M made him smile.
He packed up all the necessary things he would be needing in his new office. He was having a hard time choosing which item to pack and which item to leave behind, they all seemed to be important to him. He would love to pack them all but he didn't want to clear out his office, he wanted to leave some things behind, to somehow secure his territory. After he was done packing, he looked at his office, he surely had a sentimental attachment to this place. He knew he was going to come back after six months, but hell, he would miss his space.
He came out from his office just in time, meanwhile Julia had just finished everything she needed to do in Mr Preston's office and was headed for the office.
"I believe in you boy, I know you would make us proud." Mr Preston said to Kevin. "And trust me, this is a good thing, even for you." He said to Kevin while patting his back.
"Thank you Mr Preston, for everything, I won't let you down." Kevin said smiling. It was obvious to Mr Preston that Kevin had gotten over the initial denial and refusal stage, he now understands better.
Mr Preston lets out a laugh. "Yeah you go do that son." He said. He was happy Kevin was happy.
Kevin and Julia rode in the same car just as Julia had requested. She was going to show him around the office and give him some basic information that he needed to know.
" So, Mr Houston..." Julia said as soon as the vehicle started moving. But was cut off by Kevin.
" I think we should both go by our first names, Kevin is fine."
"Okay, Kevin, since I just met you, why don't you tell me more about yourself."
"Well, there's nothing much to say; I'm Kevin as you already know, I am the creative director at GSD, as you already know as well. I am 32 years old and I am good at my job."
"Interesting, I noticed you said nothing about your marital status; so are you married?in a relationship? Or single?"
Kevin thought the question was unnecessary and a little inappropriate, but he answered the question anyways.
"I'm single, I have been single for a while." Kevin saw a mischievous smile spreading across Julia's face as he spoke. He knew she wanted to flirt with him so he decided to reciprocate the energy, maybe she would stop when she gets tired , he thought as he started playing her game.
" So what about you, you surely are in a relationship; because you are too beautiful to be single." He said staring directly into her eyes.
Julia was first surprised to hear him sound like that,but she liked it anyway, to her, flirting would make any conversation a lot more exciting. She let out a little laugh before answering him.
"Well, on the contrary I am single, very much single. I haven't met anyone yet who suits me, someone who will take care of my needs."
Kevin acted surprised at what she said. He was having fun already, he was taking the entire situation as role playing as he always wanted to be an actor but it didn't work out for some reasons. So he allowed himself 'act' in this conversation, he didn't mean anything he was going to say or do. He didn't find Julia attractive, although Julia was a very very beautiful woman , with a nice body and a nice face ,but she just wasn't the woman for him.
"Uh, needs, what kind of needs are you talking about." He spoke as he was seductively looking at her.
Julia was thrilled to flirt with this gorgeous looking man, and with the way things were already playing out, Julia was confident that she was going to get him, maybe not now, but surely she would get him, after all, she always got what she wanted.
"You know, a woman has her needs, emotional, financial, physical and sexual needs." She said biting her lips.
Kevin, although he had been acting, became suddenly uninterested in continuing flirting with Julia. It may be because she was already taking things way too far, or may be because they had just pulled over at Grand Publishings. He was going to see her soon, his H.M.
The time was 10:45 Am when the driver opened the door for Julia and Kevin to come down from the car. Kevin was eager to see Maddie again but he didn't like how it made him feel, too excited. He was a grown man, he should not be feeling excited because of a woman, he was too old for that, he thought, but Maddie brought back the youth in him in ways he couldn't explain.
Walking into the office, Julia was all over him, she was talking about how that she wasn't easy to get, and to get her required a lot of skills which few men possessed. Kevin was already bored, but he started it so he had to finish it, he had to smile when she was smiling and laugh when she was laughing even though nothing was funny to him.
He shifted his gaze from Julia for a second and he met a wide eyed lady who looked like she had just seen a ghost. It was his H.M and his heart melted. She looked like her eyes were deceiving and it made her look cute, like a little baby. Kevin let out a laugh at the sight of her, but Julia thought he was laughing because of what she was saying, then she joined him and they both laughed as they got closer to Maddie.
Kevin heard Maddie say something, he wasn't sure what he heard because she wasn't audible and Julia wouldn't stop blabbing. He also noticed she was avoiding eye contact with him and it boosted his ego all the more. This only means she was feeling the same things he was feeling.
They got into Julia's office and Maddie came along. Kevin sat down on the the seat right in front of Julia, and she continued her conversation.
After what felt like hours of Julia's non stop yapping, Kevin heard Maddie's voice. He turned to see her standing by the door, apparently she never left the office, that means she had heard Julia talk about 'great' she was.
"Miss Meyers, do you need anything?". She said. She looked unsure of her question.
"Do I look like I need anything, Maddie?". Julia shot back at her, she obviously didn't welcome the interruption. Maddie thanked Julia and left the office, embarrassed.
"As I was saying, before I was interrupted," Julia continued.
"Julia, uhm I would really love to hear the rest of your story some other time, but since we are here now, I would like to start doing something more productive, after all I came here for business."
"Hmm, you are one of the serious ones, okay, fine. Since this whole arrangement was on short notice, we do not have an office for you yet, but it would be ready by the end of today. So your first assignment today would be to celebrate, and then you kick off fully tomorrow. Is that okay by you?."
"Yes, that will do. Thank you. So could you show me around like you said you would?"
"Yeah, sure, we could do that right now, and after that we would go out and celebrate, okay?"
"Yeah sure."
They stood up and left the office. On their way out, Julia stopped to break the news to Maddie, she also told her to prepare an office for Kevin.
With the look on Maddie's face, Kevin knew Maddie was as shocked as he was when he first heard the news that morning. He was really enjoying the look on her face but his face carried no expression like he didn't care what she thought about the news.
As they turned to leave, kevin was sure that she was still standing looking at them, but he wasn't going to turn around to see.
"I'm ready to work with you, H.M" he said to himself as they walked out of sight smiling, alongside Julia.
