Chapter 3: Three

My jaw dropped the moment I entered my room. Whoever thought a maid would sleep so luxuriously! Oh wait! It's a palace.

There were two Queen sized beds on both sides of the room. Each bed had it's own nightstand and the one on the left had an alarm clock.

There was a desk and two chairs near the entrance door and another door that led into the bathroom.

The walls were painted a light pink colour which one could almost mistake as white and the floor was boarded.

The left side already looked occupied so I figured I would have to take the right side. I walked towards it before hearing the door close behind me. I looked back to find Mrs Baxter gone.

I had this funny feeling that things were going to go haywire. I didn't know whether it was because I was practically an impersonator of the original maid who was meant to be here or the fact that my mother was sick.

The impersonating bit, I would have to take care of because now I was literally a criminal. And that warranted a heavy sentence.

I felt exhausted. I did not know that cleaning three rooms would be so hard. What would happen if I was given even more rooms. My guess was, I only got three rooms because it was already late meaning that I would have to clean even more rooms than today.

I slumped onto my bed, closed my eyes and let out a heavy sigh. I could see things were not going to be easy.

"Hello," said a melodious voice that initially startled me into a seated position.

There stood a young woman who looked to be five foot six inches, had dark chocolate hair and eyes, and seemed to be in her mid twenties.

I smiled at her. "Hey."

"You must be the new maid. I'm Jennifer, your roommate," she said as she walked further into the room.

"Seems most everyone is referring to me as 'the new maid'," I made quotation marks in the air with my hands, "I'm Zia."

"Well, nice to meet you, Zia." She sat onto her bed. "You look young. How old are you?"

Oh! "I'm 20. Not so young really."

"Let me freshen up first. Then we will get to know each other well," she said as she stood and walked into a closet. Oh! It was there all along.

"Alright!"

A few minutes after she disappeared behind the bathroom door, I stood to get myself a change of clothes. I then remembered I did not carry any luggage with me. Also, I needed to call my mother.

I got my crappy phone from the dress I had on earlier and immediately called mother. It was answered on the third ring.

"My goodness, Zia, where on earth are you? I've been worried sick. It's already dark outside, when are you coming back?" My mother queried.

"Mother! You don't have to worry. I'm safe and sound. Sorry I didn't call earlier. I've been busy..."

"Busy? Busy doing what? Let me hope you're not doing anything stupid..."

"Mother! I found a job." I bit my lower lip as I waited to hear what she had to say.

"A job? Where? What kind of job?" she asked after a few seconds of silence.

"At the palace. I'm a maid."

"Oh my God! My daughter is working for the royal family?" she exclaimed. Did I forget to mention that my mother's a very dramatic woman? And she absolutely loves the royal family? I guess I did forget.

"Well yes, mother. And I'll have to stay here as I work. So, I need you to pack for me some clothes and send them over."

"Of course, dear, you'll receive them tomorrow, okay?"

"Yes, mother, thank you. I have to go now. Talk to you soon."

"Alright, honey. Mommy loves you," I heard shuffling and some murmuring, "and so does Bobby. He sends his regards."

"I love you, too. Both of you." I then hang up.
