Synopsis

In the age of legends, no one was acknowledged as a mage without comprehending at least two baron's magic. Belial the king of fire, Azar the remembrance of winter, Kaesh the damnation of the world and Orpheus the prism of the soul.
Four of them were the source of the ancient magic in the universe...

About two thousand years ago, at the culmination of the Great Ocean War, two more appeared, called Black and White Regads. After the ascension, known as La Shiva and Al Candra.
What was four became six and that completely altered the geometry of classical magic, as it is contemplated in the Treaty of the Gates...

Lucius is twelve years old village boy, who tragically lost his family. Haunted by the dreadful memories of the past, the only thing that pushes him forward is his baby sister. They get separated in an orphanage where she is sold to a rich family. Lucius then, with his newly acquired friend Michael, decides to escape foster home and rescue his sister. Though events unfold drastically, suddenly the whole city is in a state of catastrophe, everything is engulfed in a fiery hellfire and dire creatures roam around terrorizing the townsfolk. In a world, where the old equilibrium is lost, unknown forces arise, now the only goal for youngsters is to self-preserve. As the journey for survival begins, along the way, they will have to master new skills, confront the enemies they never imagined before, even in their most bizarre dreams. And the most challenging part will remain to avoid losing themselves in the process. As there is a thin line between fighting the monsters and becoming the one yourself in the process...

The story has an interesting premise that it delivers on pretty well. I've been enjoying Lucius's journey so far, and I'm intrigued to see how the prologue becomes relevant eventually. The writing style, at least for me, took a bit of getting used to but it got much smoother as the story progressed. Story: The plot is building up pretty steadily. Things could be a little clearer, but that's more on the style. The premise is strong and the story hooks me to find out more. Style: I had the most difficulty getting into the story's writing style, which was especially prevalent in the first chapter. It's the kind of writing that makes you pay attention to what's going on, which IMO is a good thing once you get used to it. Most other technical areas are pretty solid, though I would like some more descriptions ot ground me as a visual reader. I need to be able to picture stuff and that's a litle difficult sometimes. I enjoy the pacing ehre a lt though. Nothign overstays their welcome and the story beats along really well. Grammar: Pretty solid. Some minor mistakes that a small proofread should fix. Character: Michael seems like a decent, well-intentioned protagonist caught up in things far beyond him but mkaing the best of what he can. I'm also very intrigued by Lucius and his past. Hoping to see more of his sister too. All of them are children desperate to survive, and act accordingly. Overall: This is a solid start. I'm trusting the premise in the blurb more than the story itself on what direction it's supposed to go. A little more on the fantasy aspects, like the magic and the monsters, would go a long way in making this even better. The conflict looks like it's poised right where it might escalate soon and I'm all for it. Definitely a big recommendation.

Intriguing start! The first few chapters have been a strong introduction into an unusual culture and setting. There is much I don’t know about their culture yet. Movement has been slowly building over the first few chapters. The initial losses for Lucius are countered with a strange recall that I have yet to understand and haven’t followed well. The dialogue is solid. Pacing keeps a steady beat even through the action sequences in later chapters. More description would help to keep the setting clear. Adding in new understandings of the culture would help. I'm not skilled enough to identify the actual issues. I didn’t find many phrases that held me back. Lucius and Michael have been my main exposure at this point. Both have been developing clearly. Their characters are young, so the flaws and assets simple and I’ve yet to see any direction in their arcs. I’m fine with this at this stage of the narrative. Overall, a good read that I'd recommend. The magic system and culture seems complex and I look forward to learning more. The few chapters I've read have left a solid interest and a compelling conflict with Lucius, his sister, and Michael.

Style: The description is a combination of minimal and overdone but mostly fine. I found that I needed to pay a lot of attention to understand the book. I enjoyed the use of flashbacks which made me extremely intrigued. Story: Good. It’s a bit of a slow burn but I’m not mad at that! I think it was well done. Grammar: No noticeable issues however turning on reader suggestions would mean that the occasional strange phrasing could be fixed. Characters: From the first chapter, Lai immediately stood out as my favourite (despite the relatively small amount of time spent with her). Some of the characters are slightly blurred- at one point, Michael says his name is not Michael but Lucius but then it continues talking about Michael and Lucius who are two separate characters. Despite this, I like Michael and Lucius. I think they are mostly well written and good characters! Lucius’ past is very interesting and I’d love to learn more about it. World building: There is clearly an expansive and well thought out world that I’m interested in exploring. It could be shown better, I think, though more description as they run through the city but these are small tweaks! Overall, I think this book is good, and with a little bit of editing, it can be very good!
