Chapter 1: WHO KILLED HANNAH?
One hand on the phone scrolling through my Instagram page the other holding my oversized work bag as I stepped into the compound, I heaved a sigh of relief, finally grateful to be home.
I had a long day. As much as I hated my job, I needed it. How else was I supposed to pay my bills or afford to eat? Yes, eat! Who doesn't want to eat?
My Boss is the meanest person on earth, he would make me work extra hours and still pay me the same salary, no extra fee, nothing at all.
I remember the first day I was late for work and at the end of the month, my boss deducted it from my salary.
My plans for other jobs didn't go so well, in a town where everyone is hustling and trying to earn a living, it was advisable to hold onto whatever job you had until you find something.
I looked forward to my wonderful bathtub, the one place I can soak away my stress.
I dropped my phone inside my bag and reached for my keys, I grabbed them and was about to insert them into the keyhole and then I became aware that my door was opened, which only meant one thing, someone had broken into my house.
It wasn't a forced entry as my door was intact but I had to be sure so I stepped into the apartment to cross-check, everything was in place but I would never leave my door open.
I looked up to check the connecting door from the living room to my bedroom and behold it was slightly opened too.
Oh, Lord! Let it not be him, I changed the last week. How did he get in? I said to myself.
Smack! a force so powerful hits my head, I could hear my ears ringing as I felt my body drop on the rug.
It had to be him. My crazy stalker Ex.
I tried opening my eyes but the lights coming from the light bulb was blinding.
I remember something hitting me on the head, looks like I had passed out.
How long had I been on the floor?
I tried sitting and then realised that everywhere was sticky, I looked down to check what would be the cause, it dawned on me that I was covered In blood, there was also a knife beside me.
I quickly checked to see if I was hurt, I was fine, the only pain I felt was at the back of my head.
Gosh! The pain was excruciating, I felt hazy as I stood up, what game was my ex playing this time?
Who's blood was I covered in? Why did I wake up in the kitchen anyway, I got hit in the living room.
I looked around and that's when I saw it, a body lying at the doorpost of my kitchen.
I moved closer to check whose body it was.
Behold, my best friend laid there covered in blood.
A muffled scream escaped through my throat,
"help!"
What was Hannah doing here?
How did she get into my apartment?
Who broke into my house?
But most importantly, who killed Hannah?
I was going crazy with these questions running through my mind.
I kept screaming for help, and then I heard police sirens outside.
"Oh God, help is here," I said to myself
Wait a minute, I didn't call the police so it could be that wasn't for me.
I ran out to call for help, this time hoping anyone would hear me.
I didn't make it past my living room when a swarm of police officers barged into my apartment, all of them talking at once and pointing their guns at me.
"Keep your hands where I can see them" one of them yelled.
"Hands above your head," another said.
"Miss Veronica, you are under arrest for the murder of Hannah Phillips, you have the right to remain as anything you say will be used against you in the court of law," Another said, a female this time.
Who called them? Was someone in this apartment with me? Was it one of my neighbours? How do they know it's Hannah?
I kept looking at them, tongue-tied as I felt the cold metal of the handcuffs on my hands.
"What is happening" I managed to say weakly.
"You need to shut it, ma'am," one of them said.
My neighbours came out with their phones to take pictures and videos as I was dragged into the police van.
