Chapter 3: Lionheart Legacy

In the evening, George went to the nearby pool of water that the black-robed knights used for washing their bodies. Only preparatory knights were allowed to go out of the carriage because there were plenty of dangers in the [Great Plains of Death].

In a month, three apprentices had fallen already from insect bites, wild beasts and diseases. The white-robed magi were not very happy with the result, since any death would reduce their evaluation and they would receive less rewards. Of course, they made it up by plundering the body of the fallen apprentices, which was often quite satisfactory.

All apprentices possessed at least fifteen magic crystals, and some had even gotten magical artefacts from their respective households. It must be said that most magical artefacts were capable of raising an acolyte's strength by leaps and bounds, and it was often things that could not be bought with magic crystals alone.

Many noble households have spent thousands of gold coins in order to earn those fifteen magic crystals. Sometimes, they would even pay a hefty price in order to earn magical resources, and exchange them against magic crystals. George's father, Frederick Lionheart, had many connections with acolytes. Promising them plots of lands and status in the Lionheart County, he had managed to gather 35 magic crystals which he gave to his son without hesitation.

After all, if it meant giving his first heir better odds of survival, he would have been happy to sell his castle, not to mention 35 magic crystals. The Lionheart motto was 'Blood is thicker than water', meaning that the Lionhearts valued family bonds over everything else.

In addition to those 35 magic crystals, George had been given the Lionheart's greatest heirloom, a ring engraved with runes. It was a magical artefact, and a powerful one at that. In the past month, George made plenty of experiments in order to awaken the power of this ring. Eventually, the research proved quite useful.

[Moonlight Ring - Enchanted Ring

An enchanted ring that was gifted to the Lionheart Founder after saving the Sarad Kingdom from a wyvern invasion.

Effect: Absorb up to 30 degrees of damage (0 / 30)

Can be recharged with moonlight]

It was the most valuable type of artefact: a defensive magical artefact, which could absorb up to 30 degrees of damage.

It must be said that George, even if he unleashed his family's strongest knight killing technique [Lion Beheading], could only deal 7 degrees of damage. And that was with a very sharp sword!

Most preparatory knights would not even be able to deal 4 degrees of damage with regular attacks.

This magical artefact would surely be something that would be of great help to him in the future.
