Chapter 7: 7.The Secret
"How long?" I asked,
"What? How long what?", she said while smiling.
"How long have you known about it?" I asked again a smile tugging on my own face.
She smiled and asnwered."For more than a year." I was surprised. This was anout half a year after I had started the projects. "How did you know and if you knew why didn't you stop me."
"We started investigating when a certain merchant had more yield than normal and started expanding in the city. Your uncle investigated to look for some discrepancies. I already knew about your sneaking out and from on take a guard with you." she said while taking a serious look and spoke after a minute, " you are not the first person to use the secret passages to get out." She had a mischevious smile on her face telling me who used them previously.
"He looked around and found a out that a man deep in debt had just turned his fortune around. This showed that he had a backing and well from there finding out everything was easier." She explained like it was all normal.
"But why didn't you stop me?" I asked the more worrying question.
Perhaps sensing my feeling she hugged me and said in a small voice," What was there to stop. You used your allowance to make merchant network, it showed that you were smart. Your uncle even asked me to have you register them in your own name removing them from taxes. I stopped him wanting you to speak up about it yourself. But let me ask you, why not tell me or your uncle. This would have saved you from quite some troubles."
I laughed sheepishly and spoke up," I just wanted to do this. I thought that you would probably consider it a child's fantasy and stop me."
She kissed my head softly and spoke, " I always knew you were special. I would never have turned you down, but you have to get the chef of those inns to come to the castle. I have heard they have introduced some very unique foods and I would like to have them. Who actually gave you those recipes?"
I was happy knowing that the italian cuisine was generating a buzz within the nobles. This was better for my some high class establishments." I will have the chef come up to the castle and teach the recipes. As for the developer, well I developed them with some of the chefs. Most are from old tales and replications from around the East."
This was a lie. I hated lying to her but I could not bring myself to share my orignal life. She had a surprised look on her face, " and the new fruit wine?"
"Yes, that was also developed by me. Though it is still a work in progress, it is based on rice wine used in the east."
Upon hearing this she hugged me and spoke, "I never knew you were this smart."
I asked, "About father...."
She saw my hesitancy," your father knows and has shared his approval."
This eased my worries a lot. This could even help me in the future.
"Now why don't you go and play with your siblings for a bit."
I got up thanked her and hugged her tightly and left the room.
While walking towards the garden I prayed to all the Gods to keep my mother healthy. I had done all I could without raising too much suspicion. But I truly loved, she had always been so understanding and caring.
I made my way to the garden and saw two blondes running around. I ran and lifted Jamie up, throwing him in the air.
"Who are these blondes running in the garden. What have you done to my brother and sister, they were not so tall..."
They both laughed and jumped upon me.
Hopefully, things would go better this time.
