Chapter 2: The Silver Wolf

"Question: What do you when a Wolf attacks?"

"Aren't you happy to see me Alexander?" Hunter asked. He raised his arms as if he wanted to embraces Alexander. "I hope I'm not interrupting you?"

"It's been a while. I never thought I would see you again 'Captain'."

"Captain? Huh. Never thought you would call me again." Hunter began to stroke his scar. "Considering what you did."

"You left me with no choice, Hunter."

"Huh, is that so?"

Alexander knew he wasn't a match for Hunter. His best option was to run, but he turned to look at Katherine who was still wrapped around his arm so he took one step back, as Hunter approached them. He was afraid of Hunter, and for good reasons. Hunter was at the end of his prime. He was probably 45 years of age, but he could still fight as if he was still in his twenties. Hunter has only lost one fight in his entire life, and was a master with a sword. He was nicknamed the Silver Wolf, mostly because of his Silver colored hair, but he was a natural with a blade. Swift and fast like wolf in a snowy night, and he was one of a few Mages didn't use magic to enhance his abilities. He taught Alexander how to fight at a very young age, Hunter practical raised him. He was a captain of an elite unit in the Samar Military Mages and also the King's right hand man.

"Do you believe that, Kid?" Hunter stops his approach. "You betrayed the entire Kingdom of Samar. You betrayed the King, you betrayed your comrades and you betrayed me… and then you ran away."

"You don't know anything Hunter, you--"

"Please, calm down," Katherine interrupted Alexander. "We don't want a conflict out here, people are watching."

Alexander looked around and saw a few people walking around. It was late but people still roamed the streets. Alexander took a deep breath and tried to compose himself. He knew starting a fight in Valentia could cause even more trouble for everyone present.

"What do you want Hunter?" Alexander asked.

"I told you before, you're not free yet."

"Huh, the train station. I thought I was losing my mind when I heard that." A drop of sweat fell on the side of Alexander's face.

"The King has a request for you."

"So what, are you like a messenger now?" he laughed nervously.

Hunter started laughing at Alexander's question before drawing out his sword and pointed it at Alexander and Katherine. The clouds cleared enough that the moonlight reflected of his sword. Alexander tried to reach for his sword, but soon remembered that he left it at home. His actions made Hunter laughed even harder. Katherine pulled Alexander's arm, as to warn him not to fight.

"Look at you Alexander, take a good long look at yourself," Hunters eyes turned red, "Can't you see what's happening? You betrayed your home, for this girl." He pointed at Katherine.

"At least I'm not blind to a fault." Alexander replied.

"What was that?" Hunter began to charge straight at Alexander, swing his sword.

Hunter came to a full stop in front of Alexander's face. Hunter stopped his attack short, Alexander felt the cold steel against his neck. Alexander looked Hunter dead in the eyes, his heart was beating faster. He felt like a helpless pray being attacked by a wolf. Hunter took a few steps back, but he still had his sword on Alexander's neck.

"What's wrong 'Captain'?" Alexander asked with a nervous smile on his face. "It seems you can't kill me. Am I wrong?"

"You know I can--."

"Correcting, it seems you're not allowed to." Alexander interrupted. "Now if you don't mind, please remove your blade."

Hunter slowly removed his sword, but he left a little cut on Alexander's neck. Alexander placed his hand over the wound, it wasn't too deep, but it was enough to make him bleed out to death. Katherine placed her hand over Alexander's neck and began to cast a healing spell. Something caught Alexander's eye for a brief moment. At that very moment Katherine noticed him glaring at her. The look he had was reassuring for her, as if he was saying everything is going to be okay.

He thanked Katherine for the assist and then turned to Hunter who was retracting his sword.

"What happened to the Fox Tail?" Alexander asked noticing Hunter's sword.

Hunter looked at Alexander with rage and he spat on the ground to show his disgust. It was a sensitive subject for the both of them.

"That's weird, why wouldn't he carry his wife's blade, instead of carrying a cheap one… Oh I see, his trespassing. He doesn't have permission to be here. Meaning he has a few minutes before he is discovered. We could make it out alive if we wait a little long." Alexander thought to himself.

"THAT'S NONE OF YOUR CONCERN."

"Did the King order you not to carry it?" Alexander pressed on. "Typical King Samar--."

"Be careful kid, you don't want to waste your second chance." Hunter interrupted. "Besides King Samar is offering to remove all charges against you if you compile, but I can't say the same for your little girlfriend over there."

Hunter looked at Katherine with a hostile look. That look scared her a little bit, that she hid behind Alexander. Hunter and Katherine were never on the best of terms. She was a prisoner of war 12 years ago, and hunter attempted to kill her on numerous occasions, but Alexander interfered every time. Hunter took out a letter and tossed it to Alexander. It had the Kingdom of Samar's seal, which meant it was a legitimate document. He read the letter silently, and got the gist of it.

"This is yours, when you finally complete this task, King Samar will personally sign it and you will be free." Hunter explained. "All you have to do is to find the King's lost legacy and return it to him."

"I haven't accepted this task yet, and I doubt I will." Alexander tossed the letter back. "Besides doesn't he have an army? What does he want from a 'Traitor' like me?"

Hunter crouched down to pick up the letter. He shook his head in disappointment, clicking his tongue.

"What are you doing?" Katherine asked Alexander. "Do you want to be free?"

"I'll be free, but what about you Katherine?" He asked with concern.

"That's a good question?" Hunter asked. "But you don't have a choice the matter."

"I could stay here forever, maybe get a job, get married and have kids. The Kingdom of Valentia is a wonderful place..." Alexander paused for a moment, "If you're not from the neighbouring… Kingdoms."

Suddenly two fireballs came from either side and struck Hunter. Alexander grabbed Katherine and in an instance began to generate mana to his shoes. This allowed him to jump high and avoid the explosion, but still got caught by the aftershock of the spell. Lucky a Mage caught the two before hitting the ground. The two more Mages landed on either side of where the spell hit. Before the smoke cleared, Hunter bolted out of the smoke, pulling his hood over his head. He was trying to make his escape. A magic circle appeared under his feet as he ran.

"Damn, I've been here too long. I caught the attention of the Valentia's Mages." Hunter thought, "Those spells were to powerful. When did have time to prepare those spells?"

Hunter began to disappear, but one of the Mages launched a second fireball at him. This create a huge explosion, but ultimately Hunter managed to escape.

Alexander stood there looking at the two craters left by the spells. He was amazed by Valentia's Mages who managed to catch Hunter off guard. Valentia's Mages circled around Alexander and Katherine, the couple felt uneasy by the current situation. Engaging Valentia's Mage in battle would bring more harm than good, and also it has been over 2 years since the couple fought a battle.

Ever since 12 years ago, when the Kingdom of Samar and Narvarh massacred over 20 000 of Valentia's people, the kingdom of Valentia became a neutral zone. The law prohibited foreign Mages from fighting on Valentian land.

"Do you mind explaining yourself?" one of the Mages asked. Alexander tried to explain but stumbled over his words. He had to say something quick before the Mages get the wrong idea.

"Well, I'm waiting." The same Mage continued. "Valentia is not your battlefield foreigner."

Valentia's Mages began to cast spells. Sensing their intent to kill, Katherine released her grip on Alexander. The two raised their hands and surrendered themselves over to the Mages. They knew that talking to them would not solve anything, not at that moment at least. They were trying to avoid a fight by any means.

"Question: What do you when a Wolf attacks?"

"Answer: If you have time to ask that question, then it's too late."
