Chapter 5: The Pharmacist, the Confectioner, and the Nurse

10:30 PM, Hope's Peak Academy New Building, Confection Workstation

It was such a wonderful day to take a walk through the park with my sweet Yoi-Yoi. Such a shame that Seiko decided to bail off and take Y/N back to Hope's Peak. Something about having to check if he was intoxicated or something like that, Ruruka thought, as she was busy working on her next candy project. She wasn't exactly in the best mood at the moment, since her special time was so rudely broken up after Y/N began to phase out of control. I mean, yeah, I know I'm the reason behind that and that I'm kind of responsible, but still!

How much of that drug did I even put in that candy? I only wanted to give enough for him to be a bit tipsy, nothing more. But by the time Seiko dragged him away, he looked like he was half drunk almost. Shit, I knew I should've asked her what the safest amount of dosage was before I took it. Besides, knowing drugs and their side effects are her speciality, NOT mine.

The only reason I haven't exploded yet is because Yoi-Yoi was there to make my day better. Serves to show, doesn't it? Seiko, she can definitely get the job done at times, but I can always count on Yoi-Yoi to be there for me whenever shit hits the fan. Another reason I trust him more than her, she thought.

Still, I have to admit, it was hilarious seeing Y/N walking around Seiko like her own personal lapdog, begging for affection. At least that's another good thing that came out of today, I suppose. She chuckled to herself at the thought of that boy getting on his knees and begging to Seiko.

Eventually, Ruruka decided that she spent enough time rambling about her day and decided to get back to her work. She took out her bag of candy and took out two large, glassy blue jawbreakers, and placed them inside of the candy statue's eye sockets. They were meant to be a substitute for the statue's eyes.

Ruruka was making a human-sized candy statue, with the body style taking the form of an average teenage girl. Its skin was light pinkish, made from gummy-like candy with an incredibly hard shell on the outside, to prevent the mold from smearing. Several different colored gummy candies were coated all across the statue's body. And as for the hair, she made it dark pink, entirely out of licorice. As for the outfit, she chose a casual blue T-shirt with a V neck, along with a pair of khaki shorts. She spent the past month dedicating herself to this. And it seems as if the work was paying off. The statue almost looked as if it were a real person made entirely out of candy...

I need to figure out what I should name this, too. Gumdrop Angel? No, no, not that. Candy Queen? No, not that, either. I'll think of something later, I'm sure.

After half an hour passed, Ruruka was ready to pack up and head back to her dorm for the night. A few thoughts rolled through her head. Maybe I was being a bit dramatic about the whole "candy" situation. I mean, now that I think about it, I wouldn't call it a complete failure. Seiko gave the candy to Y/N, he ate it, I saw the bright look on her face when she handed it to him, then Y/N started acting like a moth to a flame and the rest went to shit-

"Uh...who are you talking to, Ruruka?"

Completely startled, Ruruka shrieked and jumped back, turning around to see who was there. To her surprise, Seiko was there, now in her Hope's Peak uniform, carrying a dark grey bag with her. From what she could tell, Seiko's eyebrows gave off a very stern expression.

Ruruka: "Don't sneak up on me like that! Wait...was I talking out loud before you got here?"

Seiko: "Yeah. Pretty much."

Ruruka: "How much did you hear?"

"Only the part where you mentioned a moth, I think. But enough about that. Ruruka, we need to talk. About Y/N," the pharmacist told her coldly.

"S-sure, what about him? Is he alright? He wasn't looking so good last I saw-"

"Don't act so innocent, Ruruka. I know you put antidepressants in that peppermint bark," she sternly told her.

"W-What? How could you be accusing me of-"

"Ruruka, I think we both know this isn't the first time you borrowed my drugs and used them behind my back," she told the confectioner. "It happened at the bake sale last year, and now it's happened to Y/N. I thought you would've learned from that, but clearly you didn't!"

"Oh come on, that bake sale thing was just to boost our sales profits! I didn't even put that much in the treats! Just enough for them to come back to buy even more!", Ruruka told her.

"And if the academy found out that you were handing out Reserve Course students drug-filled treats, not only you, but BOTH of us would've gotten suspended! You know the faculty takes drug safety very seriously! I thought we agreed to only borrow my drugs with my supervision from now on," Seiko said loudly.

"Seiko, this time it was only ONE guy, and I didn't mean to have him trip out like that! It was just supposed to make Y/N act flustered around you, not make him act like a puppy desperate for your attention!"

"I don't care what you meant to do! You still deliberately went behind my back and drugged Y/N! Who knows what could've happened to him had you given him a higher dose on accident. And on top of that, I had to take him to the nurse just to get him back to normal, by myself! You just ran off with Sonosuke instead," Seiko told her.

--------------------- (Flasback: Several hours earlier)--------------------

Hope's Peak Academy, School Grounds, About a good hour after the meet-up at the park ended...

Of course Ruruka leaves me to do the work all by myself. Typical of her, Seiko grumbled under her breath, trying to hold Y/N steady as he started walking around like a drunk man after the eighth shot of tequila in a row. I'm lucky that he's able to keep his balance at all out here. Seriously, he won't stop clinging to my shoulder, she thought, as she grabbed Y/N by the hand and led the way.

"W-Woah, woOaAaHh, woah, where ya taking me, Seiko?", you said to her, feeling both entranced by her and light-headed to the max.

"We're going to take you to the nurse's office. The Ultimate Nurse and I will be able to properly help you there. I just hope that she's available today, because I'm going to need all the help I can get," Seiko told you.

Ever since Y/N ate that candy, he's been acting like Sonosuke around Ruruka, except, well, without the serious or brooding aspect, though. I'm genuinely concerned about him. I need to check whether or not he really is on some kind of drug yet or not. If the nurse and I can get a blood test out of Y/N, we might be able to see for ourselves. Then, once that's done, I need to take a look at the rest of Y/N's candy. Then I can go back to the lab and determine if it had anything to do with this, Seiko thought, as she guided you across the campus grounds.

You were more than happy to let her guide you around. Willing to do whatever she said.

(15 minutes later...)

After a crazy transition into the next scene, you and Seiko walked down the hall until Seiko reached the place that she was looking for. A sign up above read out the words "Nurse's Office". Finally! Now let's get this over with as quickly and efficiently as possible, she thought, as she quickly dragged you into the office.

Unfortunately, she didn't really consider how she made her entrance, as she sort of dragged you in unexpectedly, coming to a complete surprise for the nurse. "Doctor, I have someone who is in urgent need of a drug test!", she exclaimed. The nurse jumped back and shrieked, completely caught off guard.

"O-oh, I'm s-s-sorry for screaming, I d-didn't mean to! Please forgive m-me!", the nurse stuttered, in a sweet and kind of adorably innocent voice. The nurse had fair skin, somewhat pale, with long, choppy dark purple-colored hair, that was cut unevenly for some strange reason. The longest point of her hair was past her fingertips, while the shortest was slightly above her neck. Her long bangs ran down, yet some were cut shorter than others. She also had pale purple eyes, and a bandaid on her right cheek.

She was wearing a standard Hope's Peak uniform with white crew length socks, with a red bowtie around her collar. She seemed to have bandages on her left knee, and her right leg was almost entirely covered by stretch bandage. Seiko couldn't help but feel pity for the girl. She looked like she had been through quite a lot recently.

"Calm down, you did nothing wrong, really. Now, you're the Ultimate Nurse I've heard about, right? Mikan Tsumiki?", the pharmacist asked.

"Oh, y-yes, that's me! I'm a-actually kind of surprised you already knew my name! Not that m-many other people here acknowledge m-my exis-stence!", Mikan said with a smile. "Who are you and how may I help you today?"

"I'm Seiko. I'm the Ultimate Pharmacist from Class 76. This right here is Y/N. He's also from Class 76. I need you to help me run a proper drug test to see if he's intoxicated or what's affecting him," she told the nurse, still trying to keep Y/N in one place. You were kind of feeling queasy at the moment. "Did you know that orcas eat moose?", you blabbed out, unable to control yourself.

"Oh my, this does seem desperate! Of course I'll be happy to help my fellow upper-classmates! J-just set your friend down on the counter over t-there and we can begin right away!", she anxiously said. Before you knew it, Mikan took your hand and placed you down on the counter. She started to perform a health analysis on you first. She had to take your blood pressure, she checked your eyelids and your pupils, placed her stethoscope on your back, then your front to check your breathing rate, before checking your reflexes. You didn't mind her doing all of this to you.

"His pupils are definitely dilated, and his eyes look bloodshot, too. I noticed that he's breathing pretty heavily, too. His heart rate is a b-bit faster than usual as well. I'm sorry if I'm not very helpful so far-", the nurse nervously said.

"Hey, don't talk like that. You are being helpful, Mikan. Much more helpful then someone else I know," Seiko told her, trying to comfort her. It seems as if she isn't the best when it comes to self-esteem, Seiko thought. I know that feeling well.

"Oh, t-thank you v-very much! B-but I need some more information about Y/N before we can p-perform a drug test. Has he b-been acting strange recently? Any w-weird behavior he exhibits?"

"He's been feeling incredibly light-headed. I had to walk him over here just to make sure he didn't get lost. Also, he's been acting very...clingy to me. Like, he's been staring at me almost the entire time it took for us to get here. It's starting to get a little creepy, to be honest, but I know it's not Y/N's fault," Seiko said.

"And when did h-he first start showing these signs?", the nurse asked.

"About an hour ago, right after he ate some candy that my friend gave to him. I'm starting to think she put something in that chocolate that's making him act like this."

"Okay, I see. So it hasn't been too long since he's been acting like this. I think we have enough information to p-perform a d-drug test now," Mikan told her.

"Good. What are our options?"

"Well, the easiest and painless method would be to collect a urine sample from Y/N and perform a urine drug screen. They can detect a wide variety of different drugs-" Mikan said, before she was cut off.

"Can we please do something that doesn't involve having to go through Y/N's piss?", Seiko said, disgusted at the thought of it.

"S-sorry! There's also the blood test. That is a bit more painful, though. I just need to get a tiny amount of blood from one of Y/N's veins with a needle, if that's alright."

"That sounds manageable. Let's go with that," the pharmacist complied. The nurse prepared to roll up your sleeve, as she readied the needle and disinfected the area on your arm she was preparing to extract. You felt a sting, not too sharp but noticeable, as she injected the medical needle into your vein, extracting a small amount of blood from it. You couldn't help but say ouch out loud. Mikan tried to apologize for causing you pain before Seiko told her not to feel sorry. Again.

It took a relatively long time before Mikan came back with the results. She had to sit in the waiting room with Y/N while she waited. By that point, you were already bored, leaning against Seiko. She didn't seem to mind you, though. It stayed like this for quite a while until Mikan approached her, holding a clipboard with the results.

"W-well, the good news is that I've found out what kind of drug was in his system. The test said it detected prozac in his blood stream. You k-know, the kind of thing they put in happy pills? That's what it showed. It looks as if he wasn't on any illegal or extreme drugs, so that's good. He should probably recover in a few hours or by t-tomorrow," Mikan told her.

"Prozac?" Seiko said out loud, thinking to herself. Now it's starting to make sense. He's been acting like this because of prozac. I know I have that in my antidepressant category, but how would-

Ruruka. She must've taken it from me. I know I shouldn't accuse my best friend of doing something like that, but this isn't the first time she's taken my drugs without permission. If I go back to my lab and find anything missing or used, I'll be sure to pay her a visit.

---------------------- (Flash-Forward to Present)----------------------------

"Look, at the very least, Y/N's okay, right? He's not tripping out or doing something wrong right now, right?," Ruruka said.

"Yeah, he's fine. Only because I made sure he was fine. I had to give him some pills to recover properly, but I wouldn't have needed to run around all day to help him if you didn't put antidepressants in that peppermint bark!," Seiko yelled. "Had this been done by anyone else, I would've reported them in by now. But since we're friends, since we've got history, I'll let you off with a warning. I just want you to promise me that you will never take my meds without my approval again. And I mean it this time."

Ruruka sighed. "Fine, I promise, Seiko. I admit, that was my bad. That was kind of shitty for me to do."

"You can say that again."

"Look, can we talk about this later? I'm in the middle of preparing my newest project, and I'm not exactly looking forward to what's going on later this week," Ruruka said.

"What do you mean? What's happening this week? I haven't heard you tell me anything about it."

"I know it's probably just a rumor, but I've heard talk from some of my friends that one of our classmates is coming back to Hope's Peak in a few days. You know, the one that got suspended seven months ago," Ruruka said.

Seiko almost froze once she heard the news. "You're bullshitting me, right? There's no way they'd let Vince back at Hope's Peak. Not after the things that jerk pulled off."

"I'd really like to believe that, but I'm just worried that he might really be coming back. Let's just hope this is just some stupid lunch room rumor talk and nothing more."

To be continued...

Just to clarify, "Vince" is merely an OC I made for the sake of the story. He is not a canonical Danganronpa character. Vince is his nickname for Vincetti. Anyways, I hope you readers enjoyed this latest chapter! Oh, and Happy Thanksgiving, too!
